<strong>STAAR</strong> <strong>Writing</strong> <strong>Prompt</strong> <strong>Samples</strong><br />
<strong>Prompt</strong>s are scaffolded Look-Think-Write or Read-Think-Write. Students will<br />
have blank pages in the test booklet to use for planning or writing a draft. Each<br />
composition is one page in length with 26 lines on the page and no double lines<br />
allowed. The “Be sure to” section is designed to mimic the rubric in studentfriendly<br />
language. Students may use it as a checklist if they wish. <strong>Writing</strong><br />
genres are as follows:<br />
Grade 4: Personal narrative, Expository<br />
Grade 7: Personal narrative with extension, Expository<br />
English I: Literary, Expository<br />
English II: Expository, Persuasive<br />
English III: Persuasive, Analytical<br />
