Israel oil company considers building petrochemical and biofuel plants in Ashdod Paz oil, Israel‘s second-largest energy company, may build petrochemical, biofuel and desalination plants on the unused land at a petroleum refinery, Chief Executive officer Yona Fogel said Paz is weighing the options for its 275-acre site in the Mediterranean port city of Ashdod, Fogel said. The company plans to spend NIS 800 million (US $232 million) this year to upgrade the refinery, double the capacity of an electric-power cogeneration plant to almost 100 megawatts and add filling stations to its chain, he said. Paz became the country’s only integrated oil company after buying the Ashdod refinery from the government in 2006. Its chain of 261 gasoline stations is the biggest in the nation. Paz is also Israel’s biggest operator of roadside convenience stores and supplies fuel to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. “Our plans for the refinery are huge,” Fogel said in an interview from the Netanya, Israel headquarters. “We are looking at many possibilities for using the refinery’s land to optimize operations and to better utilize existing infrastructure.” He declined to give details for the expansion plan. Paz has a 26 percent share of Israel’s retail energy market.
