Adherents to the Prophecies do. Their constant expansion<br />
and ever-growing financial holdings continue to inch<br />
them toward the ultimate goal of their philosophy.<br />
Although many Drumish dwarves support the selfdenying<br />
rhetoric of Kalistrade’s prophets, the official<br />
doctrine recognizes only humans as worthy of the universe’s<br />
ultimate reward. Social status and cultural upbringing do<br />
not matter to a Drumish merchant, so long as the adherent<br />
is capable of generating wealth for himself and thus prove<br />
his value to the world. Even freed or escaped slaves are<br />
welcome to live by the dictates of the Prophecies, meaning<br />
many refugees from Cheliax or Isger seek the fields and<br />
mines of Druma as the first step to greater success in the<br />
footsteps of Kalistrade. While some few escape the clutches<br />
of poverty to become members of the ruling elite, most find<br />
that their meager accumulation of wealth cements them into<br />
lowly positions as menials or indentured servants. Many<br />
join Druma’s justly infamous Mercenary League, while<br />
others abandon the dour nation for the “freer” freedom of<br />
the River Kingdoms.<br />

When Cheliax fell to deviltry with the ascendance of the<br />
vile House Thrune, the scholars of its most distant vassal,<br />
Galt, exploded with opprobrium. The half-elf philosopher<br />
Hosetter, dean of the Torvin Academy of Edme, issued a<br />
series of scathing political essays entitled Imperial Betrayal<br />
that soon spread to the volatile cities of Andoran and<br />
even the Chelish heartland, enumerating the crimes of<br />
Cheliax’s new overlords and calling the people of a onceproud<br />
nation to arms in defense of their common ideals.<br />
At the same time, Darl Jubannich, the famous poet of<br />
Woodsedge, capitalized on the unrest by issuing his own<br />
highly publicized missives in a broadsheet series called<br />
On Government, which undermined the very concept of the<br />
divine right of kings. Sedition spread to all corners of the<br />
empire, taking root in the disgruntled merchant classes of<br />
Almas and fomenting open rebellion in Isarn, the ancient<br />
capital of Galt. From there, rebellion blossomed into<br />
revolt, with unruly mobs tearing down the old institutions<br />

of Cheliaxian rule and condemning the nation’s effete<br />
nobility to the guillotine.<br />
Only 5 years after helping the Revolutionary Council<br />
he chaired establish Republicanism as the law of the<br />
land, Hosetter himself was condemned to the headsman’s<br />
axe. Jubannich f led to Andoran, abandoning the bloody<br />
experiment he had helped initiate. Galt fell completely<br />
under the sway of the mob, and the Red Revolution has<br />
lasted now more than 40 years.<br />
The people of Galt have been fiercely independent<br />
throughout history, first as a semi-independent ally of<br />
Taldor and buffer against the wild nations of the River<br />
Kingdoms and later as the easternmost province of the<br />
old Chelish Empire. When Galt fell to Cheliax in the Even-<br />
Tongued Conquest, few of the decadent nobles in Oppara<br />
mourned its loss, considering it but the most civilized<br />
of the lawless River Kingdoms, a place where respectable<br />
thieves and brigands went to retire. On the frontier far<br />
from Westcrown, Galt developed a reputation for loose<br />
laws and even looser morality, a magnet for artists, freethinkers,<br />
and unorthodox scholars. Passion has always run<br />
deep in Galt, and a nation once known for its hot-blooded<br />
character has transformed into a nation best known simply<br />
for its blood.<br />
No government since Hosetter’s execution has lasted<br />
more than a handful of years. From time to time, a bully<br />
or patriot rises to take command of the Revolutionary<br />
Council, but the reigns are always short, as infighting<br />
and betrayal condemn leader after leader to public<br />
executions before frenzied crowds. Only the masked<br />
judges of the nation’s elaborate show trials command<br />
enduring power, as their anonymous nature protects<br />
them from retribution. The Revolution found its roots<br />
in political idealism and an attempt to scapegoat the<br />
nation’s Chelish nobility for its economic and social<br />
problems. But the old nobles are long gone, f led to the<br />
River Kingdoms or Andoran or thrust into the guillotine.<br />
The old revolutionary fervor and bloodlust still remains,<br />
but the aspirations of the past have given way to bitter<br />
recrimination and endless efforts to punish those<br />
responsible for the nation’s current woes. Revolution has<br />
plundered Galt’s treasures, destroyed its universities,<br />
and betrayed its people. Little remains now save hatred,<br />
distrust, and fear—and the tireless guillotine.<br />
Galt’s neighbors look upon their former ally with<br />
apprehension and dread, fearing the spread of the mob<br />
into their own borders. Andoran, having survived a<br />
revolution of its own inspired by the same thinkers and<br />
political situation, is especially wary of events in Galt, and<br />
keeps a large army of minutemen stationed at the nations’<br />
common borders in the Verduran Wood and the Five Kings<br />
Valley. Overwhelmed by refugees in the early decades<br />
of Galt’s coup, Andoran now refuses entry to all but the<br />
