The Academy
The official newsletter of the Australian Defence Force Academy
From the Commandant
Commodore BruCe Kafer
Welcome to the ‘Summer 2010’ edition of The Academy. I have received positive feedback on
the inaugural edition published midway through this year, so once again I would welcome
you suggestions.
This edition provides another sample of the huge variety of activities that occur at ADFA,
and I congratulate the Communications Team for its efforts in compiling the articles and
accompanying photographs. In fact our Communications Team has done a sterling job
throughout 2010, providing information to our extended ‘stakeholders’ and improving our
internal communications.
For the second edition of The Academy we have cast a wider net for articles. I am happy to
say that this newsletter includes items from our international cadets, our military staff and
members of the UNSW@ADFA academic staff. Of course we have also included highlights of
the 2010 Graduation Parade – a well earned celebration for our third year midshipmen and
officer cadets.
I wish all readers of The Academy a safe and happy festive season, and I look forward to
welcoming our staff and cadets back to ADFA in early 2011.
Warm regards,
ADFA Open Day
On Saturday 28 August the Academy opened its doors to the
public for the annual ADFA Open Day. The day was an ideal
opportunity for prospective midshipmen and officer cadets to
experience first hand what the Academy has to offer, as well as
for interested people to have a look at the exciting facilities and
activities on hand at
ADFA.
This year attendance
was one of the highest
on record – with an
estimated 8,000 people visiting the Academy. Highlights of
the day included the Army Section Attack, performances from
the ADFA Band, the Military Working Dog Display as well as
presentations from midshipmen and officer cadets. The over-
water obstacle course and the rock climbing wall also proved to
be crowd pleasers.
ADFA parent Jeff Phillips said, “It was very valuable to hear cadets
talk about their life at ADFA and to gain a first hand account of
their military and academic studies and experience. It was great
to see where my daughter is trained and to learn more about
her career”.
Open Day is a
“It was very valuable to hear cadets chance to see a
range of exciting
talk about their life at ADFA...”
displays by the Navy,
Army and Air Force
as well as to learn more about life at ADFA. Tours showcased the
outstanding academic facilities, and information sessions gave
guests an insight into this unique institution. The ADFA Open
Day is a great family day out, and is informative and exciting. It
will be held again next year on Saturday 27 August. .

ADFA performs ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’
Over the period 19 - 21 August, the ADFA Performing Arts Company (PAC) brought the stage to life with their performance of
Jeffery Lane’s ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’. Produced by Officer Cadet David Franklin and directed by Officer Cadet Annie Anderson, the
cast and crew of over 90 midshipmen and officer cadets provided audiences with an amusing night at the theatre.
The ADFA PAC performed ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ to a packed house on all three nights, dazzling audiences with their talent and
the script’s humour. The cast performed several dances and musical numbers, providing a show that kept the audience guessing at
every turn, while the band brought the performance to life with its musical mastery. Behind the scenes, the backstage and technical
crews worked tirelessly to ensure a seamless show from beginning to end.
As well as the cast and crew, the Front of House Team were kept busy providing refreshments to the guests and collecting tickets.
Through the Front of House team’s efforts in the sale of programs the ADFA PAC raised over $2000 for it’s chosen charity - Youth
Beyond Blue.
The cast, crew and committee worked for over eight months to ensure the show’s success. This involved dance and vocal rehearsals,
set design, costuming, lights, sound and rehearsing with the band.
The ADFA PAC had a fantastic year that was full of laughs, but also serious dedication to ensure that the 2010 show would be the
huge success it was. Highlights of the year were the cocktail party with the theme ‘Dead Celebrities’ and also the use of the rehearsal
soundtrack of popular, energetic songs created by Midshipman Kristian Simento, that kept the cast
and crew entertained.
The annual ADFA Production would not have been possible without the generous support of Captain Kate Tollenaar, the
enthusiastic supervising officer and Warrant Officer Class 2 Gary Caira for his hard work with the band.

Lions Oratory Competition
In August eleven midshipmen and officer cadets competed in the 2010 Lions Oratory Competition hosted by the Lions Club
of Canberra-Belconnen and ADFA. The competition allows students to master and excel in the art of oration, and to cultivate in
students the values of truth, righteousness, peace, love and non-violence.
In the preliminary round the competitors spoke very eloquently and the judges found it extremely difficult to decide who should
have a place in the finals. Eventually the list was shortened to six competitors for the tough final round.
In the finals, midshipmen and officer cadets spoke on distinguished individuals who have contributed positively to society,
including Aki Ra, Valerie Browning, Leymah Gbowee, Martin Luther King Jr, Oprah Winfrey and Peter Hore.
Competitors were required to speak about an individual whose outstanding contributions have enhanced the quality of life for all of
humanity. The competition was extremely tight, but in the end Officer Cadet Kyla Upton was crowned the winner, with Officer Cadet
Nikita Irvine and Officer Cadet Conrad Sallans taking out second and third place. The winners were presented with monetary prizes.
The evening was a great success and showed how adept some of ADFA’s midshipmen and officer cadets are, not only at public speaking
but also at engaging with an audience. The competition also highlighted the strong relationship between the Lions Club and ADFA.
Academy Military Shooting Club
2010 was the first year that military shooting at ADFA
developed into an official club with the formation of
the Academy Military Shooting Club (AMSC). This year
saw a record number of midshipmen and officer cadets
participating to improve their shooting skills. These
numbers provided a significant challenge to the 2010
AMSC Committee, which is responsible for the day-to-day
running of the club.
The club presents midshipmen and officer cadets with an
opportunity to further refine their weapons training and
skills through a combination of shoots on the Weapons
Training Simulation System, along with a number of livefire
activities throughout the year. This opportunity has
allowed midshipmen and officer cadets to achieve high
levels of marksmanship.
This year the AMSC has been led by a small team of
second and third year cadets who, along with military
staff members, have aided and mentored new cadets
in the club. All of these members have shown a vast
improvement in their skill levels, as well as a considerable
improvement in confidence and proficiency in their
weapon handling.
Members of the AMSC participated in the 2010 Australian
Army Skill at Arms Meet in Puckapunyal (AASAM). The
team, which comprised second year cadets, performed
well in all aspects of AASAM, and brought pride to
the club and the Academy. They performed with
determination and professionalism, and have set the
benchmark very high, which hopefully the AMSC can
improve on in future years.
ADFA exchange trip to China
They say that ‘In order to learn, one must try new things’. In late September, Midshipmen Sarah Eddes and Kate Phillips, and Officer
Cadets Jedd Colvin, Melissa Polkinghorne and Kristen Von Saldern, along with staff member Sergeant Brett Walsh, undertook
an overseas visit to the Peoples Liberation Army University of Science and Technology (PLAUST) in Nanjing, China. The trip was
certainly a new and profound experience for all involved.
We were warmly welcomed into Chinese dormitories and joined in with the daily routine of the Chinese cadets. At the PLAUST,
each room houses 6 students, who are expected to maintain exceptional room standards and balance a hectic daily routine.
While we were impressed by the Chinese cadets’ ability to juggle their daily routine, it was pleasing to see that they were impressed
by our personal standards and fitness levels. The Chinese cadets
were in awe of Officer Cadet Polkinghorne and her 20 heaves!
Officer Cadet Von Saldern said, “The trip was a great experience
and I am so thankful to have been chosen to participate. The
most memorable aspects were the psychological training, the
Chinese Initial Entry Training, as well as the cultural tours in
Nanjing, Suzhou and Shanghai.
“Some aspects of the trip were challenging as it took us out of
our comfort zones. This included the food (duck tongue and
other Chinese delicacies were served), as well as the academic
and military program, which left little scope for free time. .
“Overall each Australian midshipman and officer cadet gained
much professionally and personally from the trip. This included
learning about a different culture and making new friends. The
trip was a wonderful experience which gave us a unique insight
into another culture and military Academy. It also reinvigorated
our passion for our Service and helped motivate us in the lead
-up to exams,” Officer Cadet Von Saldern said.

ACME Racing Team
The Aeronautical, Civil and Mechanical Engineering Racing Team is ADFA’s very own Formula Society of Automotives Engineers
(SAE) team. Formula SAE is an international team-based competition where university students design and build small highperformance
race cars and compete in static and dynamic events for points. Similar competitions are held in the USA, Europe and
Australia.
For the competition the students assume that a manufacturing firm has asked them to produce a prototype car for evaluation. The
intended sales market is the non-professional weekend autocross race car driver. Therefore the car must have high performance
in terms of acceleration, braking and handling qualities. The car must be low in cost, easy to maintain, and reliable. In addition, the
car’s marketability is also relevant in terms of aesthetics, comfort and use of common parts. The manufacturing firm is planning to
produce 1000 cars per year at a cost below $50,000 AUD.
The ACME team has maintained its strong enthusiasm throughout the year. Redesigning and markedly improving on last year’s car;
WS-09, 2010 saw the team’s car moving under its own power in time for the ADFA Open Day. This made it the first car in Australia to
reach this great milestone. It was a great buzz to get the car up and running early. This achievement has allowed the team to spend
considerable time on testing and development. This also enabled the team to purchase the best sensors and equipment available,
giving it a full overview of the car’s performance, thereby enabling significant improvements.
The team has also invested time in developing the knowledge and skill set of the new first year cadets. These cadets have shown
great potential and have acquired considerable experience in a relatively short period. It is encouraging to see such a good group
of members come onboard this year.
Looking forward to the competition at the end of the year, the team is gearing up to show the other universities around Australia
what ADFA’s ACME Racing Team is made of. The team is currently preparing and practicing for the competition, with the aim of a
top 5 placing at the race in December.
ADFA at the Australian University Games
The Australian University Games is an annual event which brings together all major Australian Universities to compete in a wide
variety of sports. This year the event was held in Perth, and ADFA entered two teams in the competition – the Rowing and Hockey
teams. The Hockey team was supervised by Captain Scott Lehmann, with Officer Cadet Andrew Connell as Captain of the team. The
Rowing team was supervised by Petty Officer Herbert and by Captain of Rowing, Officer Cadet Leigh Brown, and Club President,
Officer Cadet Clancy Horman.
The teams departed Canberra together on 25 September and arrived in Perth to travel to our accommodation - Irwin Barracks in
Karrakatta. On Sunday teams registered with the Uni Games authorities and were able to spend a day relaxing and enjoying their
time in Perth. There was plenty of time to train and enjoy Perth’s sunny weather.
Although the Rowing team hired its boats in Perth it was still able to finish with strong results. Overall the Men’s Coxed Four came
fifth in both of its races. The Men’s double scull, which consisted of Officer Cadets Adrian Harbison and Owen Hamilton, finished first
in the B final, after having made a significant gain from its initial race.
The ADFA Hockey team also performed well at the games. It came fifth out of the eight teams, and played against national-level
players from the University of Wollongong, as well as state-level players from the University of Notre Dame.
The 2010 University Games allowed both the Hockey and Rowing teams to develop their skills and put into practice what they had
been training for all year. Both teams made a substantial effort to travel to Perth and were great ambassadors for ADFA.

ADFA Rams AFL Club tackles cancer
This year the ADFA Rams AFL Club joined big name sporting stars, the Socceroos’ Tim Cahill, Essendon’s Andrew Welsh, and the
Parramatta Eels’ Tim Mannah in the Cancer Council’s Call to Arms to help tackle our toughest opponent yet – cancer.
ADFA Rams spokesperson, Midshipman Alex Raynery said that all three AFL teams donned a yellow armband for their ‘Call to Arms
Match’ in front of a home crowd on 7 August at ADFA.
“Our players wore yellow armbands to support men who have survived cancer, those currently facing cancer, and to remember mates
who have lost their lives to cancer,” Midshipman Rayner said.
Club President, Officer Cadet Thomas Bittner, said the ‘Call to Arms’ was an initiative that the ADFA Rams were very keen to support.
“One in two men will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime so it’s certainly a great cause. The fact that it is linked to the AFL,
and in particular the Essendon Football Club, made it that much more rewarding for us to be a part of,” Officer Cadet Bittner said.
The ADFA Rams AFL Club rallied together and raised $1000 through generous donations from the public, as well as the proceeds
from the sausage sizzle and canteen being donated.
“Everyone got behind the initiative – from the players, through to the club members and the spectators. It was amazing to see
people come together to support a worthy cause,” Midshipman Rayner said.
Cadet profile – Midshipman
Bailey Campbell
On 1 November the Royal Australian Navy officially welcomed
a new member, Midshipman Bailey Campbell. Midshipman
Campbell began his career in the Australian Defence Force as
an Army Officer Cadet at the Australian Defence Force Academy
last year, but has since decided to pursue a career change as a
Maritime Warfare Officer in the Navy.
Midshipman Campbell was welcomed enthusiastically by
Lieutenant Commander Henry, Officer Commanding 2 Bravo
Squadron, and his Divisional Officer, Captain Cangiamila, who
managed his transfer from the beginning.
International Students’ Association fundraising effort
In aid of the Pakistani flood victims, and to demonstrate their support for ADFA’s Pakistani cadets, the International Students’
Association (ISA) sold Filipino and Pakistani food at the ADFA Open Day, with all proceeds going towards the flood victims.
Due to the strong support from the public, ADFA staff and the cadet body; community awareness of the flood crisis was increased.
In addition, a total of $1700 was raised for this worthy cause.
The ISA was established as a social network to support the international cadets at the Academy. 2010 has been a good year for the
ISA as the diversity of nationalities and cultures within the Association has enabled significant friendships to be formed.
With 37 international students, from 12 different countries, the ISA is an avenue for social interaction and cultural immersion. This
year we have members from Cambodia, Iraq, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand,
Tonga, Vietnam and the USA.

General Cosgrove delivers
University Lecture
General Peter Cosgrove arrived to pep up the troops at the
annual University Lecture on 24 September.
Before an audience of 900 midshipmen and cadets, and joined
by the Vice Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant General David
Hurley, the Commandant of ADFA, Commodore Bruce Kafer, the
Rector of UNSW@ADFA,
Professor John Baird and
other senior members
of Defence, the former
Chief of the Defence
Force shared his views
on the social, media,
political and ethical
challenges facing modern Australian Defence Force (ADF) officers.
He advised the officers, when confronted with fear, to
remember their core purpose –responsibility and reciprocity.
He spoke of trust and integrity, and of leadership in the face of
danger.
Having joined the Army in 1965, General Cosgrove has seen it
all. His service in Vietnam earned him a Military Cross in 1971.
He continued to stand out in the Defence Force, particularly as
Commander of the International Forces East Timor (INTERFET)
in 1999 which oversaw East Timor’s transition to independence.
The mission’s success made him one of Australia’s most
respected and popular military leaders.
In 2001 he was named Australian of the Year and was appointed
Chief of the Defence Force in 2002. General Cosgrove retired
from the Army in 2005 but, after Cyclone Larry devastated Far
North Queensland
“...everyone can become a leader
if they are good at and passionate
about what they do...”
in 2006, he was
appointed Chairman
of Operation
Recovery Task Force.
During his speech
General Cosgrove
explained that he
will forever be a soldier but that everyone can become a leader
if they are good at, and passionate about, what they do.
General Cosgrove’s experiences in the ADF and beyond were
published in his best-selling memoir ‘My Story’ and he currently
holds several Board positions for major companies, including
Qantas, and is Chairman of the Australian War Memorial.
Disher Cup
The Disher Cup named after Captain H.C (Clive) Disher, is one of the most prestigious and celebrated rowing races in Canberra. The
race, which takes place on Lake Burleigh Griffin, began in 1971 - initially between the Australian National University (ANU) and the
Royal Military College Duntroon (RMC). The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) began participating in 1986.
Rowing is one of the more popular sports in Canberra due to the locality of Lake Burleigh Griffin, which is just south of the City. There
are a variety of clubs on the lake which primarily operate in the warmer months of the year. ADFA and RMC do the majority of their
training in winter with their season beginning in February and ending in October after the Disher Cup.
This year’s races were some of the more difficult experienced by the rowers, as the track was changed due to the intense wind
conditions. The traditional race, which was to be held on a 5 km course, became a 1.8 km in sheltered waters at the western end of
the lake. Spectators also braved the conditions on the banks of the lake and were extremely supportive of their respective teams.
The results for 2010 saw ANU winning the Women’s four and ADFA winning the Men’s four. The Men’s eight, which is the main race,
saw ANU come first followed by ADFA and then RMC.
The rowers have worked extremely hard throughout the season and are ready for a few months of well-earned rest before they
begin a new season in 2011.

CanTeen Day
On 8 October a day of fun-filled activities and challenges were organised by the Australian Defence Force’s (ADFA) Community
Service VECA (CSV) for 35 CanTeen ACT/NSW members. CanTeen is an Australian charity which was founded in 1985. Its mission is to
‘support, develop and empower young people living with cancer’.
For the seventh consecutive year, the ADFA CSV conducted ‘Exercise Outreach’ or CanTeen Day. The day consisted of militarybased
activities at the ADFA Boatshed and the Academy. The event, which took two months of planning and preparation, saw the
participants undertake kayaking, dragonboating, a shooting exercise at the Weapons Training Simulator System (WTSS), and the
above pool obstacle course. This year 45 ADFA midshipmen and officer cadets volunteered to support the event.
During the first half of the day water sport activities, an ACT Water Police display and an Army field-pack display were conducted at
the ADFA Boatshed. With the support of Petty Officer Herbert and the ADFA Physical Training Instructors, the volunteers (including
members of ADFA’s Dragonboating VECA) had an opportunity to lead small groups of CanTeen members.
President of the CSV, Officer Cadet Rouyin Ye, described CanTeen Day as an opportunity to give back to the local community.
“It was a rewarding experience to see the participants grow in excitement and enthusiasm. They were really grateful for the chance
to get out and experience something different, but I think that we at ADFA were empowered by their passion for life,” Officer Cadet
Ye said.
In the afternoon the participants were given a tour of ADFA. For many of them it was their first visit to a military establishment. Their
young faces lit up with amazement and wonder when they were told of the historical significance of notable locations such as the
ADFA Parade Ground and Tree of Knowledge.
In return they asked questions about life as a cadet at ADFA. To the volunteers’ delight, their inquisitiveness persisted throughout the
day. At the WTSS CanTeen participants were taught various shooting positions, as well as the particular features of the F-88 Austeyr.
Along with members from the ADFA Shooting VECA, they were given one-on-one guidance for a shooting exercise, and received
the results of their performance.
The fun continued at the Indoor Sports Complex. Participants changed into camouflage uniforms and preened themselves
in their new military gear. They were posed a new challenge – to complete the ‘Above pool obstacle course.’ While most of
them attempted the course, whilst some remained on the gym floor and were taught Military Self Defence (MSD) techniques
by demonstrators from the MSD Club. With these activities, CanTeen Day came to a conclusion. ADFA volunteers, as well as
CanTeen members, benefited from the experience of exemplary community service, confirming ADFA’s commitment to the wider
community and the cadets’ development as junior officers in the ADF.
Army Aviation Corps, flying both UH-1H Iroquios and CH-47
Chinooks. Since joining the Army, I have been lucky enough to
deploy on Operations Sumatra Assist, Anode, Acolyte and Slipper.
Some career highlights include attending my CH-47 transition
course in Fort Rucker, Alabama; participating in the Qualified
Helicopter Tactics Instructor course at Royal Air Force Benson in
the UK; and commanding an aviation troop on three operations,
encompassing the entire spectrum of conflict from civil
assistance to warfighting.
I have definitely enjoyed my time at ADFA, and it’s been fantastic
to come back as a staff member after graduating from here a
decade ago. The best part is the practical experience – I have
learnt more about Command and Leadership in my one year
here than in the ten years since I graduated. There is truth in
the old saying ‘that to truly learn something, you need to teach
it.’ It is a shame it is over so quickly; next year I will be heading
back to Alabama for two years, accompanying my wife on her
posting to the US.
Robin Robertson, Senior Lecturer - Oceanography
Few would expect a young girl from Kansas in the centre of the United
States, 1700km from the nearest beach, would enter the world of
oceanography, much less overcome gender barriers to do so.
Nevertheless, Robin Robertson’s intentions were clear from the age of
13, inspired by her father who was a chemical engineer. Robin’s career
path has not been the standard, direct approach but has combined
oceanography and ocean engineering, academia and industry, field
work, data analysis and modelling.
She was one of the first five women to be admitted to the Ocean
Engineering Department at the University of Rhode Island. By the
time she graduated, the number of female students had grown
but the numbers today haven’t continued to increase. Despite the
male-dominated discipline, Robin has mostly fond memories of her
classmates.
Although much of Robin’s career has involved internal waves, vertical
mixing mechanisms in the polar regions became her broad interest
in the early 1990’s and more recently her primary focus became tides
in relation to climate research. This has taken her to Antarctica several
times to monitor sea ice and ice shelves in an attempt to better
understand how much tidal power contributes to the movement of
warm water into Antarctica.
Robin earned her PhD at Oregon State University modeling tides,
while working with an observationalist and going to sea.

ADFA Army Dining-In Night
Upholding the tradition of an interesting and humorous evening,
the ADFA Army Dining-In Night was held on 12 August. The
dinner was attended by many distinguished guests including
Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie,
Vice-Chief of the Defence Force, Lieutenant General David Hurley,
Commander Australian Defence College, Rear Admiral James
Goldrick and Commandant ADFA, Commodore Bruce Kafer.
Each distinguished guest made a meaningful contribution by
spending quality time talking to the cadets about the Academy
and the training that we receive.
Officer Cadet Roulston said, “These nights are a great opportunity
to have a one-on-one discussion with some of the officers
responsible for decisions which affect the cadets at the Academy.”
Lieutenant General Gillespie explained the future of the Australian Army during his speech, focussing on the ‘adaptive’ aspect that
it will take on in 2020. He also discussed the future capabilities, and many of the roles that directly apply to the cadets in attendance.
A truly memorable night (for those who avoided the port), the 2010 ADFA Army Dining-In Night continued the traditions - just
adding a little twist for all to enjoy.
