"The mountain," according to the c<strong>on</strong>text, is the mountainous regi<strong>on</strong> of Hebr<strong>on</strong>,<br />

where the spies had seen the Anakites (Num 13:22,28). The two clauses, in v. 12,<br />

beginning with kiy (OT:3588) are not to be c<strong>on</strong>strued as subordinate to <strong>on</strong>e another,<br />

but are co-ordinate clauses, and c<strong>on</strong>tain two distinct motives in support of his<br />

petiti<strong>on</strong>: viz., "for thou heardest in that day," sc., what Jehovah said to me then, and<br />

also "for (because) the Anakites are there;"..."perhaps Jehovah is with me ( 'otiy<br />

(OT:853) for 'itiy (OT:854), see Ges. §103, 1, anm. 1, and Ewald , §264, b. ), and I<br />

root them out" (vid., Josh 15:14). The word "perhaps" does not express a doubt, but a<br />

hope or desire, or else, as Masius says, "hope mixed with difficulty; and whilst the<br />

difficulty detracts from the value, the hope stimulates the desire for the gift."<br />

And <strong>Joshua</strong> blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the s<strong>on</strong> of Jephunneh Hebr<strong>on</strong> for an<br />

inheritance.<br />

Then <strong>Joshua</strong> blessed Caleb, i.e., implored the blessing of God up<strong>on</strong> his undertaking,<br />

and gave him Hebr<strong>on</strong> for an inheritance. Hebr<strong>on</strong> is menti<strong>on</strong>ed as the chief city, to<br />

which the surrounding country bel<strong>on</strong>ged; for Caleb had<br />
