Commencement of the Divisi<strong>on</strong> of the Land of Canaan. Inheritance of<br />

Caleb. Ch. 14.<br />

<strong>Joshua</strong> 14:1-2<br />

And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of<br />

Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and <strong>Joshua</strong> the s<strong>on</strong> of Nun, and the heads of the<br />

fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.<br />

Vv. 1-5 form the heading and introducti<strong>on</strong> to the account of the divisi<strong>on</strong> of the land<br />

am<strong>on</strong>g the nine tribes and a half, which reaches to ch. 19, and is brought to a close by<br />

the c<strong>on</strong>cluding formula in Josh 19:51. The divisi<strong>on</strong> of the land of Canaan according<br />

to the boundaries laid down in Num 34:2-12 was carried out, in accordance with the<br />

instructi<strong>on</strong>s in Num 34:16-29, by the high priest Eleazar, <strong>Joshua</strong>, and ten heads of<br />

fathers' houses of the nine tribes and a half, whose names are given in Num 34:18-28.<br />

"By the lot of their inheritance," i.e., by casting lots for it: this is dependent up<strong>on</strong> the<br />

previous clause, "which they distributed for inheritance to them." "As the Lord<br />

commanded through Moses" (Num 26:52-56; 33:54, and 34:13), "to the nine tribes<br />

and a half" (this is also dependent up<strong>on</strong> the clause "which they distributed for<br />

inheritance").<br />

<strong>Joshua</strong> 14:3-5<br />

For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and an half tribe <strong>on</strong> the other<br />

side Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave n<strong>on</strong>e inheritance am<strong>on</strong>g them.<br />

So many tribes were to receive their inheritance, for the two tribes and a half had<br />

already received theirs from Moses <strong>on</strong> the other side of the Jordan, and the tribe of<br />

Levi was not to receive any land for an inheritance. According to this, there seem to<br />
