fathers' houses, and households; and is so used not <strong>on</strong>ly here, but in Josh 12:7 and<br />

18:10. Compare with this 1 Chr<strong>on</strong> 23:6; 24:1, etc., where it is applied to the different<br />

orders of priests and Levites. "And the land rested from war:" i.e., the war was ended,<br />

so that the peaceable task of distributing the land by lot could now be proceeded with<br />

(vid., Josh 14:15; Judg 3:11,30; 5:31).<br />

In the historical account of the wars of <strong>Joshua</strong> in the south and north of Canaan, the<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly kings menti<strong>on</strong>ed by name as having been c<strong>on</strong>quered and slain by the Israelites,<br />

were those who had formed a league to make war up<strong>on</strong> them; whereas it is stated at<br />

the close, that <strong>Joshua</strong> had smitten all the kings in the south and north, and taken<br />

possessi<strong>on</strong> of their towns (Josh 10:40; 11:17). To complete the account of these<br />

c<strong>on</strong>quests, therefore, a detailed list is given in the present chapter of all the kings that<br />

were slain, and not merely of those who were defeated by <strong>Joshua</strong> in the country <strong>on</strong><br />

this side of the Jordan, but the two kings of the Amorites who had been c<strong>on</strong>quered by<br />

Moses are also included, so as to give a complete picture of all the victories which<br />

Israel had gained under the omnipotent help of its God.<br />
