And the men of Gibe<strong>on</strong> sent unto <strong>Joshua</strong> to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not<br />

thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all<br />

the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against<br />

us.<br />

The Gibe<strong>on</strong>ites then sent to <strong>Joshua</strong> to the camp at Gilgal, and entreated him to come<br />

to his help as speedily as possible. "Slack not thy hand from thy servants," i.e.,<br />

withhold not thy help from us. The definiti<strong>on</strong> appended to "the kings of the<br />

Amorites" ( "that dwelt in the mountains" ) is to be understood a potiori , and does<br />

not warrant us in drawing the c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>, that all the towns menti<strong>on</strong>ed in v. 3 were in<br />

the mountains of Judah. The Amorites who dwelt in the mountains were the str<strong>on</strong>gest<br />

of all the Canaanites.<br />

Verse 7. In accordance with this petiti<strong>on</strong> <strong>Joshua</strong> advanced from Gilgal ( waya`al<br />

(OT:5927), not went up) with all the people of war, even ( vav expl. ) all the men of<br />

valour.<br />

Verse 8. The Lord then renewed the assurance of His help in this particular war, in<br />

which <strong>Joshua</strong> was about to<br />
