<strong>Joshua</strong> 10:1-4<br />

Now it came to pass, when Ad<strong>on</strong>izedek king of Jerusalem had heard how <strong>Joshua</strong><br />

had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had d<strong>on</strong>e to Jericho and her king,<br />

so he had d<strong>on</strong>e to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibe<strong>on</strong> had made<br />

peace with Israel, and were am<strong>on</strong>g them;<br />

The report that <strong>Joshua</strong> had taken Ai, and put it, like Jericho, under the ban, and that<br />

the Gibe<strong>on</strong>ites had c<strong>on</strong>cluded a treaty with Israel, filled Ad<strong>on</strong>izedek the king of<br />

Jerusalem with alarm, as Gibe<strong>on</strong> was a large town, like <strong>on</strong>e of the king's towns, even<br />

larger than Ai, and its inhabitants were brave men. He therefore joined with the kings<br />

of Hebr<strong>on</strong>, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Egl<strong>on</strong>, to make a comm<strong>on</strong> attack up<strong>on</strong> Gibe<strong>on</strong>, and<br />

punish it for its alliance with the Israelites, and at the same time to put a check up<strong>on</strong><br />

the further c<strong>on</strong>quests of Israel. Ad<strong>on</strong>izedek , i.e., lord of righteousness, is syn<strong>on</strong>ymous<br />

with Melchizedek (king of righteousness), and was a title of the Jebusite kings, as<br />

Pharaoh was of the Egyptian. Jerusalem , i.e., the founding or possessi<strong>on</strong> of peace,<br />

called Salem in the time of Abraham (Gen 14:18), was the proper name of the town,<br />

which was also frequently called by the name of its Canaanitish inhabitants Jebus<br />

(Judg 19:10-11; 1 Chr<strong>on</strong> 11:4), or "city of the Jebusite" ( Ir-Jebusi , Judg 19:11),<br />

sometimes also in a c<strong>on</strong>tracted form, Jebusi ( hayªbuwciy (OT:2983), Josh 18:16,28;<br />

15:8; 2 Sam 5:8).<br />

(Note: In our English versi<strong>on</strong>, we have the Hebrew word itself simply transposed in Josh 18:16,28; whilst<br />

it is rendered "the Jebusite" in Josh 15:8, and "the Jebusites" in 2 Sam 5:8. - Tr.)<br />

On the divisi<strong>on</strong> of the land it was allotted to the tribe of Benjamin (Josh 18:28); but<br />

being situated up<strong>on</strong> the border of Judah (Josh 15:8), it was c<strong>on</strong>quered, and burned by<br />
