2009 Saints Football Outlook
The St. Lawrence University football
team enters 2009 coming off of an injuryplagued
2008 season. The Saints saw ten
starters miss time throughout the 2008
campaign, but behind a group of veterans
that includes 32 seniors and a young
nucleus of talent, the Scarlet and Brown
have much to be excited about when the
season kicks off in September.
Head coach Chris Phelps’ team
returns eight of the team’s 11 offensive
starters this season, while Defensive
Coordinator Kevin Farr’s unit welcomes
back seven of 11 starters including Pre-
Season All-American Gerard Bryant.
“We have a solid blend of seasoned
veterans, including our largest senior
class, playing alongside some highly talented
players who are looking to make an
immediate impact at the collegiate level,”
said Coach Phelps. “Our team selected
four players with outstanding character
to serve as captains this season, including
Connor Hackett, Gerard Bryant, Mike
Battaglia and McLean Beyor. We’re
looking to improve upon our mark from
last season and compete with some of the
best football programs in the country in
2009.”
OFFENSE
St. Lawrence graduated two All-Conference
offensive linemen, Tim LaRose
and Chris Lutgens. The Saints will also
need to replace leading receiver Ryan
Cooney, who earned All-Conference
honors, and captain Carl Festa, a former
All-conference player who missed several
games due to injury in 2008. With Offensive
Coordinator Chuck Leierer calling
the plays, the unit will be led by captains
McLean Beyor in the trenches and Connor
Hackett out of the backfi eld.
OFFENSIVE LINE
The Saints will undoubtedly miss
LaRose and Lutgens up front, but will
build around a trio of senior starters
that includes Beyor (5-10, 250, Black
River, NY), Justin Wacenske (5-10, 245,
Rochester, NY) and Jon Thomas (6-3,
245, North Sutton, NH). The group also
includes fi ve other seniors, headlined
by Rob Kunces (6-4, 245, Darien, CT).
Junior Shane Hoffman (6-2, 265, South
Salem, NY) and sophomores Oscar Rodriguez
(6-4, 255, Palm City, FL) and
Senior Connor Hackett (above) will join
classmate Eric Jones as the Saints’ primary
threats out of the backfi eld in 2009.
JP Calero (6-2, 245, Port Chester, NY)
are also poised to challenge for starting
roles in 2009. Offensive line coach
Chuck Leierer is excited about the talent
level of the incoming class, anchored
by Dan Rohauer (6-4, 245, Alden, NY),
John Van Haaren (6-2, 265, Elmont,
NY), Greg Kelly (5-11, 250, Syracuse,
NY) and Ryan LaHue (5-11, 255, Coral
Springs, FL).
QUARTERBACK
The Saints return each of their
options at quarterback from 2009,
including junior JP Kearney (6-0, 185,
Lafl in, PA), who handled the starting
role throughout the majority of
his sophomore year. In nine games,
Kearney completed 163-of-301 passes
for 1,716 yards and seven touchdowns.
Classmate Michael Baraldi (6-0, 185,
Chelmsford, MA) will look to regain
the starting job having lost it to injury
last fall. Meanwhile, sophomore Andy
Spadoni (5-11, 195, Webster, NY) may
be a player to keep an eye on during
training camp, as he had an outstanding
fi rst year campaign and spring season.
RUNNINGBACKS
Captain Connor Hackett (6-2, 200,
Bronxville, NY) returns for his senior
season after missing much of 2009 due
to a hampering injury. Hackett was an
All-Conference player as a sophomore
and boasts both power and speed that
makes him one of the Saints’ primary
offensive weapons, having totaled 20 career
touchdowns in 24 collegiate games.
Fellow senior Eric Jones (5-10, 210,
Watertown, NY) burst onto the scene in
Hackett’s absence last year at tailback as
well as at fullback. Jones landed on the
Liberty League’s Second Team offense
having piled up a team-high 638 yards
Washington (5-10, 210, Pahokee, FL)
also saw playing time in their fi rst seasons
with the Scarlet and Brown and can
be expected to contribute again as sophomores.
Meanwhile, the Saints get even
deeper in the backfi eld with impressive
recruits, including converted quarterback
Jeremy Ramos (5-9, 185, Staten Island,
NY) at tailback and Marc Minogue (5-
TIGHT END
Senior Donovan Edwards (6-1,
240, Haines city, FL), the 2008 starting
tight end, returns for his fi nal season in
Canton, NY. Edwards proved to be a
valuable blocker in the running game
and could see more passes thrown his
way in 2009. Meanwhile, junior Tim
Robinson (6-2, 220, Voorheesville, NY)
will be in the mix for playing time as will
senior Dan DePuccio (6-1, 190, Troy,
NY). Incoming student Stephen Buskey
(6-2, 225, Hanover, NH) hopes to use his
size and strength to develop into a solid
future option at tight end.
WIDE RECEIVER
The graduation of Ryan Cooney and
Hakiem Greenhut leaves several question
marks surrounding the team’s corps
of wide receivers. However, Coach
Phelps believes this position is where
the most surprises may come in 2009.
Converted quarterback Mike Wayne (5-
11, 175, Fairport, NY), who fi nished the
2008 season with an 11-reception game
against WPI, is coming off of an impressive
spring season and will be a player to
watch this fall. The team is also excited
about the return of sophomore Ethan
Sutton (5-9, 175, South Paris, ME), who
provides big play capability downfi eld.
The duo will join returning starters Anthony
Patterson (5-9, 165, Lockport, NY)
and Rick Stepien (6-0, 185, Youngstown,
NY), who add experience and reliable
targets in the passing game. If junior
Alcee Walker (5-9, 160, West Palm
Beach, FL) can build on his solid spring
ball performance, opponents will have
to respect his speed and ability to stretch
the fi eld.
2008 Saints Football Outlook
DEFENSE
The Saints’ defensive unit graduated
six starters including All-Conference
honorees Devaun McFarland and Andy
Welkley. The 2008 season was highlighted
by the emergence of Gerard Bryant on
to the national scene, as the White Plains,
NY, native was a First Team All-American
and was named CDS’ 2009 Pre-Season
Defensive Player of the Year. However,
Bryant, a captain along with senior
Mike Battaglia, will be surrounded on
the defensive side of the ball by several
playmakers who gained valuable playing
experience last fall.
DEFENSIVE END
Despite the losses of Charles Haydock
and Jonathan Edwards along the
defensive front, the Saints return several
quality players who are ready to make
an impact at defensive end. Seniors Tom
Lagos (5-11, 240, Watertown, NY) and
Matt DePuccio (6-1, 190, Troy, NY) and
juniors Nate Howard (6-0, 210, Durham,
NH) and Chris Palmer (6-0, 215, Portsmouth,
RI) each saw action last season
and will work to build on their quality
game-time experience. Adding depth to
the Saints’ roster in their rookie years include
Jesse Clark (6-2, 245, Ticonderoga,
NY), Mike Gormley (6-2, 205, Ballston
Spa, NY) and Rob McCourt (6-3, 210,
Scituate, MA).
DEFENSIVE TACKLE
St. Lawrence will rely on the strong
interior play of Gerard Bryant (6-0, 240,
White Plains, NY) and fellow starter
junior Justin Vega (6-2, 260, Syracuse,
NY). Bryant’s monster 2008 season
included 97 tackles, 56 of which were
solo stops, and a conference-best 20.0
tackles for a loss. Vega became a regular
along the defensive line and chipped in
10 tackles. The position is one in which
the Saints return all of their contributors
from a year ago, including seniors
Jordan Lewis (6-3, 270, Taberg, NY)
and Christian Lopez (6-4, 300, Highland
Mills, NY), junior AJ Walsh (5-11, 255,
Springvale, ME) and sophomore Doug
Geraghty (6-3, 250, Selden, NY).
10
LINEBACKERS
Senior starters Gabe McBride and
Gabe Colas will join captain Mike
Battaglia in working to replace former
captain Chuck Bradway at the interior
linebacker position. McBride was the
team’s second-leading tackler with 66
stops while Colas made 20 solo tackles
and added 4.0 for a loss. The duo, along
with Battaglia, will be joined by seniors
Brett Hart (5-11, 200, Barre, VT) and
Travis Castleman (5-11, 200, Hastings,
NY), juniors Ryan Fedo (5-11, 190,
Warwick, RI) and Andrew Leiser (6-1,
220, Bar Harbor, ME) and sophomores
Phil Hamilton (5-9, 210, Winthrop, MA)
and Sam Fulmer (6-2, 200, Rye, NY) at
inside linebacker.
At the outside spot, senior Steve
Degree (6-2, 190, Williston, VT) will
compete alongside juniors Ben Cryts (6-
2, 200, Derry, NH) and George Cuchural
(5-9, 185, Hingham, MA) for the starting
gig left by Josh Miller, who graduated
last spring.
SAFETIES
Senior Luke Lewis (5-10, 185,
Oxford, NY) will look to step into the
starting free safety role this season with
the graduation of Michael Bruno. Lewis
will be challenged for playing time by
Sam Crossan (5-9, 185, Wenham, MA)
and Dillon Huntley (5-10, 170, Canton,
NY) and sophomore Trevor Saunders
(5-10, 185, Mount Vernon, NY). A versatile
player to watch in the secondary
will be rookie Edgar Rojas (5-10, 190,
North Miami Beach, FL).
Replacing three-time All-Conference
safety Andy Welkley will be diffi cult for
Defensive Coordinator Kevin Farr, but
he has several options at the safety spot.
The frontrunner for the position is junior
Wendell Caesar (5-10, 190, Brooklyn,
NY).
CORNERBACKS
St. Lawrence will look to fi ll the void
in the secondary left by two-time All-
Conference corner Devaun McFarland.
However, due to McFarland’s injury
last season, the Saints were able to work
Andrew Williams (5-11, 170, Miami,
FL) and Louis Jenkins (5-9, 165, Fort
Lauderdale, FL) into the starting roles.
Christian Bianchi (5-10, 175, Pittsfi eld,
MA) had a remarkable spring campaign
and launched himself into the competition
for playing time in his sophomore
year.
Meanwhile, sophomores Jarell Roberts
(5-9, 175, Al Tamonte Springs, FL)
and Justin Eaddy (6-0, 170, Fort Lauderdale,
FL) will also be in the mix at the
cornerback spot. With the Saints continuing
to build for the future, the coaching
staff has added Zach Choquette (6-2,
180, Mattapoisett, MA), Aaron Lawton
(5-10, 180, Roslindale, MA), James
Stephens (5-9, 165, Brooksville, FL) and
Derek Delzer (5-10, 160, Alden, NY).
SPECIAL TEAMS
The graduation of starting kicker and
punter Matt Popov will put the spotlight
squarely on Chris Dris (5-9, 165, New
Port Richey, FL), an outstanding prospect
out of Clearwater Central Catholic.
The Saints’ return game will be
anchored by sophomore Trevor Saunders,
who became a staple in the team’s
special teams unit last year. Saunders
averaged a team-high 15.0 yards per
punt return in 2008 and went for 18.6
yards per kickoff return. Senior Anthony
Patterson and junior Louis Jenkins add
experience in the return game as well, as
the group works to earn the offense quality
fi eld position.
The senior trio of Gabe McBride (center),
Gabe Colas (left) and Andrew Williams (right)
will help to add veteran leadership to the
Saints’ defense this season.

St. Lawrence University supports a variety of off-campus programs on six continents that allow students to enrich their majors, expand their
world, gain cross-cultural skills and prepare to be responsible global citizens. The Saints’ football program has seen players both past and present
take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to explore different regions of the world and receive a unique perspective and experience.
“With our traditional playing season taking place in the fall, an opportunity is created which allows those students looking to have a seriouslycompetitive
Their dedication to both made them prime candidates to study within the global community.”
