About Connect to Protect®: Boston
Boston is made up of 20 diverse neighborhoods and more than 600,000
residents, as well as being home to world-class hospitals and healthcare
centers. Boston takes pride in being one of the most livable cities in
America due in large part to a core of committed long-term residents
and communities. It is this commitment, along with a history of
collaboration among community organizations and hospitals, that
enables Connect to Protect®: Boston to provide opportunities to protect
our city’s youth from HIV/AIDS infection.
According to a recent United Nations report, half of all new HIV
infections are among 15-24-year-olds, with young women particularly at
risk. The researchers involved in C2P are from the Adolescent Medicine
Trials Network (ATN) for HIV/AIDS Interventions, the only nationwide
group devoted to looking at how youth and their communities are
affected by this epidemic.
Connect to Protect®: Boston is one of 15 city sites throughout the United
States and Puerto Rico caring for children, teenagers, and young adults
with HIV, searching for ways to keep HIV from spreading among young
people, and making sure that adolescents and young adults are
represented in research ranging from HIV prevention to treatment and
care.
STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is the virus that is widely believed
to cause AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). HIV enters
the body usually as a result of unprotected sexual intercourse or other
blood to blood contact with someone who already has the virus. HIV
attacks and weakens the immune system by destroying helper T-cells,
an essential part of the immune system. HIV is fragile and cannot
survive long outside of the body
12

STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW
HOW IS HIV TRANSMITTED?
• HIV can be transmitted by the exchange of infected
blood, semen or vaginal fluids from one person to another.
• Sexual transmission of HIV occurs most frequently during
anal or vaginal intercourse without the use of a latex
condom.
• HIV can be transmitted by sharing contaminated
needles.
• HIV can be transmitted during oral sex.
• Infected women can transmit the virus to their babies
during pregnancy or birth and in some cases, through
breast milk.
Although presently there is no cure for HIV/AIDS, we now
know that people can live for many years with HIV. As
treatments develop, it becomes increasingly possible to
treat HIV infection as a long term but controlled illness. It is
important to seek early treatment and counseling to help
improve and prolong the quality of life. Currently there is a
wide range of treatments available.
STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW
Young people can get HIV tests on their own. You don’t
need your parent’s permission…but it is always great if they
are involved.
With all methods of HIV testing, it is important to know that
your privacy is protected. Parents, friends, school,
work…none of them have to know your business, whatever
the test result may be. Talk to your tester if you have more
questions about confidentiality or the test.
14

STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW
WHAT IS THE HIV ANTIBODY TEST?
The HIV Antibody test is not a test for AIDS, but rather for the antibody
that forms in response to the presence of HIV in the blood. The
antibody can be detected in most people within six weeks to six
months from the time of infection.
WHAT DOES A NEGATIVE TEST MEAN?
A negative antibody test means that at the time of the test
there was no presence of HIV antibodies found in your system.
It is important to continue safer sex and needle practices.
It does not mean that you are immune to future infection with
HIV.
WHAT DOES A POSITIVE TEST MEAN?
A positive HIV antibody test means that you are infected with
HIV. Your body is producing the antibodies (the immune
system's response to infection) to HIV.
You do not necessarily have AIDS.
A positive HIV antibody blood test result means you can infect
other people with the virus.
15

STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW
HIV/AIDS IS A PREVENTABLE DISEASE
Here are some ways to prevent transmission of the virus:
• The only sure way to prevent sexual transmission of HIV is through
abstinence.
• Think and talk about HIV prevention before having sex.
• When engaging in anal, vaginal or oral sex, use a latex condom
each time (do not re-use condoms).
• During sexual activity, avoid getting someone else's blood,
semen, or vaginal secretions into your body.
• Alcohol and other drugs impair judgment, which may lead to
unsafe practices. To learn more about condom use and other
protective measures, please contact the AIDS Hotline.
• If injecting drugs, do not share the needles (or cotton, syringe
and cooker). Use new needles or needles cleaned with full
strength bleach and rinsed with water each time.
• Women considering pregnancy should seek counseling to
determine their risk.
16

What is Safer Sex?
STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW
Safer sex is anything we do to lower our risk of getting a sexually
transmitted infection. It's about getting more pleasure with less risk.
Three Steps to Safer Sex:
1. Become honest with ourselves about the risks we take.
2. Decide which risks we are willing to take — and which ones we
aren't willing to take.
3. Find ways to make our sex play as safe and satisfying as
possible.
The most important ways to reduce your risk are:
• Keep your partner's body fluids out of your body — vagina,
anus, or mouth. The body — fluids to be most careful about are
blood, cum, pre-cum, vaginal fluids, and the discharge from
sores caused by sexually transmitted infections.
• Don't touch sores or growths that are caused by sexually
transmitted infections.
Safer sex also means protecting your partner:
• Don't allow your body fluids to get into your partner's body.
• Don't have sex if you have sores or other symptoms of infection.
• Have routine checkups for infections.
• Get the correct treatment if you become infected
STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW
Sex, Drugs, and Mixed Feelings
As much as we like sex, it embarrasses a lot of us. Sometimes we can't
admit we enjoy it. Some of us use alcohol or other drugs to feel less
self-conscious about enjoying ourselves. The more we use drugs when
we have sex, the more we are likely to take risks.
STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW
Dating violence
A healthy relationship is surrounded by mutual respect, equality, trust
communication, and freedom. An unhealthy relationship is
characterized by disrespect, fear, jealousy, and possessiveness. It often
follows a cycle of violence which includes tension, violence, and
seduction (apologies, gifts).
Victims and abusers can be ANYBODY. They are people we know and
people we care about. Dating violence happens to girls and guys of
any ethnicity, in both gay and straight relationships.
STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW
ALCOHOL FACT SHEET
The younger you are when you start drinking, the more likely
you are to have a problem with alcohol.
Alcohol is a depressant.
The best thing to do for a friend with a problem is to tell a
counselor or someone who can help.
Alcohol poisoning occurs when you drink too much alcohol
too fast, which can lead to coma or even death.
The worst thing to do when a person has had too much to
drink is to leave them alone or lying down. They need to be
kept awake and moving-- and they need medical help.
Alcohol-related accidents are the #1 killer of teens.
1.4 million teens a year are injured in some way through an
alcohol related accident.
You ALWAYS have a choice about whether or not to drink.
What is PEP treatment?
Prophylaxis means disease prevention. Post-exposure prophylaxis
(or PEP) means taking antiviral medications as soon as possible
after exposure to HIV, so that the exposure will not result in HIV
infection.
What do I do if I’ve been sexually assaulted?
• Get away from the attacker to a safe place as fast as you
can. Then call 911.
• Call a friend or family member you trust. You also can call a
crisis center or a hotline to talk with a counselor. Feelings of
shame, guilt, fear, and shock are normal. It is important to get
counseling from a trusted professional.
• Do not wash, comb, or clean any part of your body. Do not
change clothes if possible, so the hospital staff can collect
evidence. Do not touch or change anything at the scene of
the assault.
• Go to your nearest hospital emergency room as soon as
possible. You need to be examined, treated for any injuries,
and screened for possible sexually transmitted diseases or
pregnancy.
• Ask the hospital staff about possible support groups you can
attend right away.
STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW
What to do if you are pregnant: questions to ask yourself
• Which choice(s) could I live with?
• Which choice(s) would be impossible for me?
• How would each choice affect my everyday life?
• What would each choice mean to the people closest to me?
• What is going on in my life?
• What are my plans for the future?
• What are my spiritual and moral beliefs?
• What do I believe is best for me in the long run
• What can I afford?
Talk about your feelings with your partner, someone in your family, a
clergyperson, or a trusted friend. All family planning clinics have specially
trained counselors. These counselors can talk with you about your
options. Your counselor will try to make sure that you are not being
pressured into any decision against your will. You may bring your partner,
your parents, or someone else, if you wish.
STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW
TATTOOING & BODY PIERCING
Hepatitis B and C transmission can occur if a tattoo artist or body
piercer uses an unsterilized (unclean) needle used on someone
else that has hepatitis B or C to pierce or tattoo a person or uses
other equipment that is unclean. Before getting a tattoo or
piercing, check out the place…and ask some questions!
• Is the place clean & professional looking?
• Does the artist or piercer wash his/her hands and wear
• latex gloves when tattooing or body piercing?
• Does the artist or piercer use sterile, disposable needles
• that he/she opens in front of the customers?
• Does the artist or piercer throw away ink caps, razors and
stencils after each use?
• Does the artist or piercer use an autoclave (an intense
• heating process) to sterilize (clean) equipment? If they
• do, ask if the autoclave gets inspected monthly?
• Does the artist or piercer sterilize the bottles used for color
and/or the work area with bleach or other approved
disinfectants?
• Does the artist or piercer uses an ultrasonic tank to rinse
the tube and needle set from the tattoo machines?
