1949 is a year of change in the artistic work of Preben<br />
Hornung as he is leaving naturalism behind in favour<br />
of a constructivist expression. In a series of factory<br />
<strong>paintings</strong> with motifs taken from the Steel Rolling Mill<br />
in Frederiksværk, the artist makes abstractions of the<br />
architecture <strong>and</strong> the machines of the large-scale in-<br />

dustry. The heavy machines with pipes, pistons <strong>and</strong> tubes<br />
are in Hornung’s <strong>paintings</strong> transformed into dynamic<br />
compositions where each element has its own<br />
precisely balanced placement. From 1949 to 1951,<br />
Hornung exhibited with the group Linien II who introduced<br />
the abstract-constructive painting in Denmark,<br />
a painting founded on geometric shapes, planes, rhythm<br />
<strong>and</strong> movement.<br />
