Fortunately this year’s Annual Conference and Southwest Buying Show was not hampered as much by the
weather as our conference in 2010. We survived some cold temperatures on Thursday and Friday and a little
ice on the back of the courts on Saturday. Other than that it was another great weekend of educational
opportunities and networking.
I would like to thank everyone who made this year’s conference and buying show such a success. Special
thanks to Craig Bell for lining up such a great group of speakers and presenters and to Jenny Gray for once
again organizing a phenomenal buying show. As always Christy Sobey does a great job keeping us organized
and on track for all the events during the course of the weekend. Thanks to Loyce Woods for helping at the
registration desk. I think everyone would agree the conference would not be the same if we did not see her
smiling face behind the registration table!
I would also like to recognize all our wonderful sponsors. HEAD/Penn Racquet Sports sponsored our Friday
night dinner and casino night, as well as Feisal Hassan’s specialty course and on court doubles seminar. Our
general membership meeting and lunch was cosponsored by the Fort Worth Professional Tennis Association
and the Dallas Professional Tennis Association. Nick Bollettieri’s session was courtesy of Prince Sports and
Wilson sponsored MaliVai Washington as the keynote speaker for our annual Texas Hall of Fame Awards
Banquet. It is these partnerships and our strong partnership with USTA Texas that continues to keep the
USPTA Texas Division in the forefront of our organization.
April promises to be an active month for Texas tennis. I hope many of you have an opportunity to go to the US
Men’s Clay Court Championships held at River Oaks Country Club in Houston April 4 – 10, 2011. Co-tournament
chairs Ron Woods and Jenny Gray have planned a fun Champion of Champions event during the professional
tournament. USPTA Texas will be busy this whole week; not only with the tournament but also offering a
specialty course on Thursday, April 7 and hosting the USPTA Executive Committee members at the tournament
Thursday afternoon.
I hope you all are looking forward to the change in location from Houston to the Hyatt Hill Country August 25
– 27, 2011. I know I am! The weekend promises something for the whole family. Board member David Webb
is planning our golf outing; there will be educational opportunities, the Southwest Buying Show and even a
lazy river for the kids. Hope to see many of you in August!
I would like to remind everyone to register your Tennis Across America events and join the One-Clinic Challenge
to raise awareness of one of society’s biggest problems today: childhood obesity. The USPTA has issued a
challenge to all the divisions and they will reward the division that hosts the most events per capita and
increases the number of events from 2010. USPTA Texas wants to win this contest not only for the $1000 for
the divisional party in Saddlebrook but for bragging rights! If you have any questions please contact Karen
Crumpton, TAA Committee Chair.
In closing, I would like to thank both Joe Snailum and Barry Mills for all their hard work for USPTA Texas and
for serving on the board. I would also like to welcome new board members Craig Bell and Nancy Vivero. As
a board we are looking forward to more member involvement at the committee levels. The Membership
Committee chaired by Jory Erikson is already involved with sending out new member welcome packets. So if
you have any interest in becoming involved please do not hesitate to contact any board member. I look
forward to this year as your division president and hope we all can work together to keep USPTA Texas at the
forefront of our organization.

DENNIS RALSTON: Elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987, former U.S. Davis Cup player
and captain, Dennis Ralston coached the Team from 1968 – 1972. Winner of 27 national singles and doubles titles
and a five-time winner of Grand Slam doubles titles, Ralston began playing tennis at the age of 5. Wimbledon and the
tennis public first heard from him in 1960. As a 17- year- old he joined with his University of Southern California
teammate 21-year-old Rafael Osuna .Together they took the doubles prize. Unseeded, they were the youngest to win
at the Big W, 7-5, 6-3, 10-8 over Mike Davies and Bobby Wilson. It was as a doubles player, in the right court
alongside Chuck McKinley that he made his strongest showing. They won the U.S. title in 1961, 1963 and 1964 and
were in the final in 1962. They pried the punchbowl away from Australia, 3-2 at Adelaide in 1963. After a stellar
playing career, he was the first traveling coach on the pro tour. Chris Evert, Roscoe Tanner, Yannick Noah, Gabriela
Sabatini and John Lloyd were among the tennis greats Dennis coached. Ralston was one of those rare men who were
a Davis Cup winner both as a player and captain. A slim 6’2" tall, Ralston was a stylish stroker with a piercing
forehand, a fine server and excellent volleyer who was in the U.S. Top Ten for seven straight years from 1960. He was
the first to be No. 1 three straight years (1963-65) since Don Budge (1936-38) His career spanned the amateur and
open eras and he made the World Top Ten in both: 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966 and 1968 (No. 5 in 1966 when he lost the final at Wimbledon to Manolo
Santana). He was the first of three men to have won U.S. doubles titles on the four surfaces; grass, clay, indoor and hard followed by Stan Smith and
Bob Lutz. Dennis was inducted into the Southern California Hall of Fame in
US Men’s Clay Court Championship
USPTA Professionals raise more than $5 million for charity
In 2010, United States Professional Tennis Association teaching professionals raised more than $5 million for charity through the association’s
Lessons for Life program. Lessons for Life became USPTA’s national charitable program in 1999 and since then the USPTA and its
members have raised more than $45 million in an effort to support various charities. Through this program, the USPTA encourages its
members to use tennis as a vehicle to help others through fundraisers and other activities in their communities. The fundraisers take
many forms including tournaments, pro-ams, auctions, black-tie dinners and clinics. Many of the fundraisers take place at country clubs
and commercial clubs, where the majority of USPTA Professionals direct tennis operations and programming.
In 2009 an additional element was added to the program when the USPTA and Rally for the Cure joined forces to raise awareness in the
fight against breast cancer through tennis and Lessons for Life under the broader Tennis – for the health of it! initiative. Rally for the Cure
has the tools and materials for USPTA tennis-teaching professionals interested in running a Lessons for Life charity tennis event in
support of Rally for the Cure. This is just one more way USPTA teaching professionals can give to important causes through tennis and
Lessons for Life. Lessons for Life is officially celebrated in October, but USPTA members may direct and participate in fundraisers yearround.
Any fundraising that you do for recognized charities – giving free lessons or clinics, organizing tournaments and play in pro-ams,
conducting auctions, and hosting black-tie dinners – can be counted in Lessons for Life numbers. Reporting is easy if you send an e-mail
to your division liaison or to lessonsforlife@uspta.org or send an electronic report via the Lessons for Life section of www.uspta.com.

for our great game and profession on a daily basis. This
award should go to many others as well in the industry.”
Eligibility & Age Requirements:
* Champ and Superchamp qualified players are ineligible to play in the State Championships. Each local
circuit can set their own rules for eligibility but qualified players may not participate in the State
Championships.
* Players who qualify for Champs on August 1, 2011 or later may still participate.
* Players must begin play in their local circuits at the age division appropriate to State eligibility using
September 1, 2011 as the cut off date. Ex: A player who will turn 15 on September 1, 2011 must play in
the 16 age division for their circuit to qualify for State.
State Team Requirements:
* The new age divisions are as follows: 10s Green Ball, 10s Yellow Ball, 12s, 14s, 16s. This is a change
from previous years since so many teams have trouble filling the boys and girls 18s.
* Players are allowed to play “up” one division but never a lower division.
* There is a 12 team maximum at the State Championships.
* Teams playing in the 2010 State Championships will be invited back first to compete in the 2011 State
Championships.
* Teams failing to bring a full roster to the 2011 State Championships will not receive an invitation to play
in the 2012 State Championships.
HEALTHY HABITS
Is it Baby Fat—or Obesity?
By Sarah Klein
FRIDAY, Feb. 5 (Health.com) — Desani Marshall was never really overweight, but she was always a little big for her age.
During a checkup at age 4, her doctor pointed out to her mother that Desani was gaining weight more rapidly than he
thought was normal. Six months later, she was still putting on pounds at a rapid pace—a strong predictor of future obesity.
“I didn’t take it seriously; I didn’t think it was that bad,” says Desani’s mother, Caryl Marshall, of New York City. “But then he
showed me the growth chart. At the rate she was gaining, what really made me take it more seriously was what the future
could be.” Now 7, Desani is gaining weight at a normal pace, thanks in part to dietary changes—such as cutting out soda—
that Marshall has implemented. “Everybody would look at her and say, ‘She’s so skinny. Why?’” Marshall says of her
daughter’s regimen.
In some ways, Desani’s success story is an exception. Across the country, childhood obesity has only gotten worse. More
than 20 years after it was first described as an epidemic, 17% of American children and adolescents are obese—triple the
rate in 1980—and nearly one-third are overweight, according to the latest government data. Alarming statistics such as
these have prompted government agencies, schools, and nonprofit organizations to launch a barrage of anti-obesity programs
in recent years.
Their sense of urgency is not shared by all parents, however. In fact, studies have consistently shown that parents tend to
underestimate their child’s weight and the health risks associated with being too heavy. In a 2006 study that surveyed the
parents of obese children, only one-half recognized that their child was overweight, and less than one-third said they were
“worried” about their child’s weight. In another survey, only 38% of parents had taken steps, or were planning to take
them, to help their obese child lose weight.
Several factors may be contributing to this indifference among parents, experts say. Some parents believe their child’s
excess weight is just “baby fat,” for instance, and some may simply be in denial. Or it could be that parents have concluded
their kid is normal after eyeballing his or her overweight peers. “Because so many children are overweight and obese…they
don’t stand out as much as they would have 20 or 30 years ago,” says nutritionist Elisa Zied, a registered dietitian and
spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. “I almost see a lack of concern with some parents.”
Parents should be concerned. Although some overweight kids do outgrow their baby fat, roughly two out of three are likely
to grow up to be obese adults, according to a 2009 study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Childhood obesity, moreover, is associated with a slew of serious health problems, including diabetes, asthma, heart disease,
and depression.
How do you know if your child’s chubbiness is baby fat or a serious health problem? You can’t always tell just by looking,
and you can’t always count on pediatricians to broach the subject. But you can take matters into your own hands and adopt
habits that will keep your child as healthy as possible.
