P RESIDENT’ S RE P ORT
Spring Forward
Hello Fellow Coaches,
Spring is already here with warmer and busier days on the court.
The fi rst trimester was an active one, with lots of activities
including two specialty courses. I had the pleasure to attend
the Ed Collins course and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had our Annual Awards Dinner
at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Congratulations to all the coaches who were
recognized with an award. We co-hosted a divisional convention with the California
Division, and had the BNP Paribas Open USPTA Day at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden,
which every year has a special “Kids Day”. This year they had a record number of kids,
with over 1,000 kids participating in the festivities.
Walking on the side courts during the BNP Paribas Open I ran into Raquel Giscafre,
tournament director of the WTA Mercury Insurance Open tournament. This tournament
will be played in La Costa as a prep tournament for the US Open. She had asked me
to announce that the tournament will treat USPTA members with refreshments and free
tickets on the opening night. The entire list of future events is included in this newsletter.
TennisFest is planned for May 1, 2011, and Geoff Griffi n is very excited, as usual. If you
would like to get involved contact Geoff or Steve Kappes. The Desert Golf Tournament
is back on Sunday, May 15. To be part of the tournament contact our Executive Director,
Don Gomsi.
I represented the San Diego Division at the Executive Committee meeting at the USPTA
Headquarters in Houston, Texas, on April 7-9. A few of the highlights included the
unconditional support the USPTA is giving to the new rules of tennis for the 10 and
under divisions. The Headquarters will paint the extra lines for 36 and 60 foot courts
in one of their two tennis courts. In addition to this, all Junior USPTA tournaments
will be run with the new rules of tennis. The USPTA National Convention will be in
Saddlebrook this year and in Monterey, Calif., in 2012.
On May 1st, available for all smart phone users, will be a USPTA application from the
Apple Store with direct access to all videos of tennisresources.com. I am also excited to
announce that the San Diego Tennis Hall Of Fame will induct fi ve new members to the
class of 2011, with past and present USPTA members. Festivities will be on Saturday,
August 27. For more information contact the Balboa Tennis Club.
As for me, I’m glad to be here. I fi nd this experience a fun one, and I am doing it
because I believe this division can do more for their members. I am a proud member
of the USPTA, and believe this organization is making a difference for the tennis pros
nationally. It is up to us to make the difference locally. I need the help of everyone in
the division, to make things happen. Hope you can be part of it.

Awards Dinner
The Annual Awards Dinner was held March 5, 2011, at the wonderful La
Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. After the cocktail reception, president Nelson
Alapi got the evening going with some raffl e prizes and then introduced the
keynote speaker, Brad Stine, former coach for Jim Courier. Brad spoke about
his coaching experiences with Fresno State, players on the tour, the highs and
lows with Courier, plus he demonstrated his “move”.
The food was great and the sunset over the water was magnifi cent. Awards
were presented by Geoff Griffi n and Steve Kappes. Additionally that evening,
a business meeting was held where the revised bylaws were passed. The
evening closed with more raffl e prizes.
Joint Divisional Convention with the California Division
A joint divisional convention was held at the Manhattan Beach Tennis Club on January 29 and 30, 2011. It was a
great convention despite some rain. The San Diego Division members who attended were treated to a high school
coaches workshop and many excellent speakers such as Wayne Bryan, Ajay Pant and Dr. Allen Fox. During the
raining time, the workshop moved inside to a conference room where QuickStart balls and a small net were used.
It was a superb conference and nice to be able to exchange ideas with members from the California Division.
READY POSITION
TENNIS TIP
By Jeff Dollins
One of the most effective ways to improve your
game is to work on your “Ready Position”. I’m sure
this is obvious to some, but you would be surprised
how often I see players not getting back to a ready
position in between shots. I see many players get
caught up in watching their shot and don’t really get
ready for the next one. If you watch tennis on TV, try
to watch one player for an entire rally and not the ball
once in a while. Watch how the player gets ready
while the other one is hitting and you will see some
of these basics.
The fi rst step prior to a ready position is to get back
into the court (or the middle of your half in doubles).
Then as the opponent is striking the ball be sure to
get into a balanced ready position. A ready position
consists of several things all happening at once that
allow you to respond better to any shot your opponent
hits. Basically your body should be balanced and
facing straight ahead (not leaning or guessing one
way or the other). Your knees should be slightly bent,
Geoff Griffi n - A Leader
Geoff Griffi n, tennis director at Balboa Tennis Club,
received the Channel 10 Leadership Award for the
month of January 2011. Congratulations to Geoff
on receiving this well deserved honor for all his
contributions to the San Diego tennis community.
Pictured are Geoff and Hal Clement, newscaster for
Channel 10.
and you should not be on your heels. Pretend you
have tacks in the heels of your shoes to keep you
on the balls of your feet. Simultaneously get your
hands out in front and if possible hold the racket
with your non-dominant hand while relaxing the
grip of your playing hand. This allows for any
need to change your grip and keeps your playing
hand relaxed or soft. Your hand can stay on the
racket but does not squeeze. The non-dominant
hand should help with any grip change you might
need to make for the next shot. Also, pay close
attention to the ball striking your opponents’
racket for a quick fi rst move. The fi rst move to
where the ball is headed is the most important
move. I see a lot of players start to move too late
and get rushed when the ball gets to them.
Just remember, once the ball leaves your racket
don’t stand there and watch, keep working on
getting back to ready position and preparing for
the next shot. I realize you don’t need to do all
this in order to hit a good shot, but if you get in the
habit of getting in ready position you’ll fi nd your
ability to fl ow from shot to shot will improve.
Good luck.
A “ Courtly” Sport
By Dophie Poiset
Tennis has long been known as a sport that has a
tradition of good manners and sportsman like conduct;
a sport for ladies and gentlemen. We have traditionally
valued polite behavior over winning or losing. A
saying that has long been used to describe tennis is:
“it is not whether you win or lose…but how you play
the game”. A dress code was long a part of the sport.
A tidy appearance, collared shirt, and skirts or shorts
were required. As we all know, whites only was the
100 year long tradition and rule at tennis clubs worldwide.
Honor in behavior & appearance was valued.
And then it changed. Untidy appearance, unshaven
men, arguing and profanity used toward the umpire,
racquet abuse - all tolerated. Now it is the norm. And,
as a natural consequence, tennis has lost its status as
a high class sport.
At a recent USPTA convention, one of the speakers
traced the decline in the popularity of the sport
of tennis, and the decline in the income of tennis
professionals, directly to the change in the values
and high behavior standards that have long been
tennis’ tradition.
Many people say we are simply following cultural
norms. Society has changed. People are less formal.
So what should we as professionals and ambassadors
of our sport do? Lower our standards… or continue
our traditions of court etiquette, proper behavior,
and dress standards? My belief is that tennis should
(as has golf) try to weather the cultural storm. We
should keep to our traditions of polite behavior until
the pendulum swings back our way again. Let’s
lead the way!

Specialty courses
Don Henson presented the specialty course The ABC’s of Stroke Production at the beautiful Pacifi c Athletic
Club on January 22, 2011. It was a four hour course packed with information on a systematic approach to developing
stroke foundation and analysis skills for players of all ages. Eleven pros attended this event and will
The Peninsula Tennis club was the location for Ed Collins presenting his specialty course on Junior Development
on February 13, 2011. Ed presented many handouts and gave dozens of drills, games and activities on
court to keep the interest of juniors and enhance their tennis skills. 22 pros attended this course and also will
HEAD Star Novak Djokovic Unstoppable
Sharapova back in the top ten since signing with HEAD
Novak Djokovic’s amazing tennis season continued
as he took his fourth title of the year in Miami.
World #2 Djokovic defeated Nadal in the finals with
his YouTek IG Speed MP. Djokovic’s record
extends to 26 consecutive match wins (including 2
Davis Cup matches last year) and he has 24
consecutive wins so far in 2011. Djokovic became
the first player to win both Indian Wells and Miami
since 2006. “I mean, you obviously get confidence
with 24 wins in a row. I mean, it keeps getting
better, of course,” said Djokovic. “But I don't want
to be carried away from that. I want to keep on
working hard and taking one match at a time. You know, when it stops, it
stops, but I'm definitely focusing on the next opponent. ”
Leading into the first match of the tournament, Novak surprised fans and came
out to the court sporting his “Wing Tennis” gear from HEAD’s new viral video
featuring Novak Djokovic playing on the wings of an airplane. To view HEAD’s
video log on to their YouTube or Facebook pages:
Maria Sharapova had great consecutive tournaments in the US after reaching
the semi-finals at Indian Wells and the finals at Miami. With these results,
Maria is back into the top 10 since facing her
big injury and also since switching to her
HEAD racquet. “I’m very, very happy that
I’ve achieved this much in the last three,
four weeks,” said Sharapova. “You know,
I’m proud of that. Definitely.” HEAD will be
launching Maria’s new products later this fall.
Dear USPTA members:
Wanted - Used Tennis Balls
Hi! My name is Danielle Bradley and I am Doug Bradley’s daughter. I am a junior at Mt. Carmel High
School and I just founded a club called P.A.R.T.T.Y. Animals (Protecting Animal Rights Through Today’s Youth).
For our fi rst big project, we want to lend a helping hand to local rescue organizations and we could really use your
help.
I just started playing tennis this past summer and I fell in love with the sport. However, every time I came
across a dead ball, I thought, “There has got to be some way to make some use out of these things.” About 300
million tennis balls are manufactured world wide each year. Unfortunately, most of them end up in our landfi lls
due to the fact that recycling them isn’t too convenient.
Since I love both dogs and our planet, I thought of a way to help both at the same time. If you would be
willing to collect your dead balls, my club and I would love to pick them up and deliver them to the local dog rescues
and shelters through out San Diego County. It would really help get P.A.R.T.T.Y. Animals rolling, but more
importantly, it would really help the rescue organizations with such limited funding. Feel free to e-mail me back if
you have any questions or concerns and/or would be willing to participate.
USPTA Day at the
BNP Paribas Open
USPTA Day at the BNP Paribas Open was Monday, March 14, 2011. We had about 125 pros participating in the
day receiving free lodge tickets to the sixth largest tournament in the world that was held at the Indian Wells Tennis
Garden. Tom Fey, vice president for Coachella Valley, coordinated the event and all the member correspondences.
Along with the free admission, we got together for a group picture and meeting where we learned about how Re-
Bounces recycles tennis balls and how clubs can use a system to re-pressurize old tennis balls. Plus, the board of
offi cers for the San Diego Division held a board meeting while at the tournament. Thanks go to Tom for setting
up the great event!
In fact, why pay anything at all?
I want to make $25 I want my players to sign up online Player Registration
$25 + $3 = $28
Cost out of your pocket - $0
Revenue for you - $25/per player
Earlier this year, the USPTA announced the launch of
its Accredited Professional Coach classifi cation, a new
membership classifi cation that includes mandatory
education, and the competency exam to become
eligible for this classifi cation is now available to
members through the USPTA’s Learning Management
System.
To apply for this new membership classifi cation, in
addition to being certifi ed at the USPTA professional
level, members must also take the Professional Tennis
Coaches Academy I and pass a competency exam at
the 80th percentile or higher. Those who have already
taken the PTCA I and scored 80 percent or higher do
not need to retake it.
The competency exam is made up of 20 questions
and members will receive immediate feedback on
their score through the LMS. Members who have
already signed up and paid for the exam will receive
an e-mail notifi cation from the national offi ce. For
those who are looking to take the competency exam,
the cost of the exam is $50 and you can e-mail
education@uspta.org for more information on how to
sign up. This classifi cation is open to Professional 1,
2 and 3 members and Master Professionals. USPTA
Professional members are required to take continuing
education in order to earn and maintain APC status.
The benefi ts of APC designation include opportunities
for career enhancement through a commitment to
tennis and tennis education and demonstration of
expertise, and building the image of tennis-teaching
20
USPTA’s APC Competency Exam now available
professionals and tennis as a profession overall. The
APC is earned by accumulating 20 APC continuing
education credits within a two-year period. The
designation is maintained by continuing to earn 20
APC credits over every two-year period. APC credits
can be earned in a variety of ways including attending
the USPTA World Conference, USPTA division
conventions, USPTA specialty courses, USTA High
Performance education, viewing DVD seminars, and
more.
Two hours of qualifying education will constitute one
CEU. The opportunity to earn credits at USPTA World
Conferences and division conventions will require
members to fi ll out a form for credit at the beginning of
the seminar or specialty course (that is collected at the
end of the seminar), in order to verify attendance for
credit. For more details regarding qualifying credits,
e-mail education@uspta.org.
Once members achieve this distinction, they will be
issued a special certifi cate with an expiration date and
the designation will be added after their professional
rating. The certifi cate will be available online to print
from the member management area of www.uspta.com,
where members can log in with name and member
number.
While the APC classifi cation did not become effective
until January of this year, those members who
attended specialty courses at the World Conference
in September and completed the forms for credit will
have those credits count toward the APC classifi cation.
