We aim to <strong>of</strong>fer appointments on the day <strong>of</strong> your choosing, though your<br />
practitioner <strong>of</strong> choice may not be immediately available. Please book your<br />
appointment online, via interactive TV, by telephone or by calling in at the<br />
Practice. Please note that not all appointments are available on-line.<br />
Appointments may be booked in advance.<br />
Please remember to cancel any appointment you are unable to keep. You can<br />
also do this by using the above methods.<br />

Interpreter Services<br />
Interpreters can be booked in advance. Please discuss your requirements with<br />
reception staff or a nurse or doctor.<br />
Nurse Practitioners and Practice Nurses<br />
The Practice Nurses run surgeries every day. They liaise very closely with the<br />
Doctors so can refer patients to them as appropriate. They deal with a wide<br />
range <strong>of</strong> problems including:-routine smears, foreign travel advice and<br />
vaccinations, general health issues, asthma, management <strong>of</strong> wounds and injuries,<br />
ear syringing, wart treatment, emergency contraception, follow-up for other<br />
contraceptive services, male/female sexual health, Chlamydia screening, eating<br />
disorders and minor ailments.<br />

The following Clinics and Services<br />
are <strong>of</strong>fered:-<br />
Asthma Clinic: Appointments available Monday – Friday<br />
Diabetes Clinic: Alternate Wednesday afternoons 2.00pm – 4.40pm<br />
Minor Ailments:<br />
Nurse Practitioners, who are able to prescribe for minor ailments, are available<br />
for telephone advice Monday-Friday between 08.45 and 10am. Appointments<br />
are also available throughout the day.<br />
Travel Clinics: Monday - Friday<br />
Travel appointments are available throughout the year with the nursing staff.<br />
It is important that you submit the travel questionnaire at least 48 hours<br />
prior to your 1st appointment. This can be downloaded from<br />
www.sheffield.ac.uk/health, or obtained from our reception and sent to the<br />
<strong>University</strong> Health Service. Please ensure that your 1st appointment is at least 8<br />
weeks before your departure and bring with you any record <strong>of</strong> your<br />
immunisations. The <strong>University</strong> Health Service is a certified Yellow Fever Centre.<br />
Male Sexual Health Advice:<br />
These clinics are held twice weekly and run by our male Nurse Practitioner or,<br />
if you prefer, you can see a male doctor. A 15 minute appointment is required.<br />
Female Sexual Health<br />
These clinics are run by our female <strong>practice</strong> nurses. Appointments are available<br />
Monday – Friday.<br />
• Contraceptive Pill Clinic<br />
Doctors and Practice Nurses are available to discuss contraception and<br />
give advice on all aspects <strong>of</strong> sexual health. To discuss a new method <strong>of</strong><br />
contraception, please make a routine appointment with a Doctor or our<br />
Nurse Practitioner. To renew your current method, you may consult one <strong>of</strong><br />
the Practice Nurses.<br />
• Emergency Contraception<br />
The emergency contraceptive pill is used to prevent pregnancy after<br />
unprotected intercourse. It is best taken and most effective within the first<br />
24 hours but can be taken up to 72 hours after sex. A prescription can be<br />
obtained from the <strong>practice</strong> nurses. It is also free <strong>of</strong> charge at the Walk in<br />
Centre and Family Planning Clinics or may be purchased over the counter<br />
at pharmacies.<br />

• Cervical Smears (female patients)<br />
It is recommended that all women over the age <strong>of</strong> 25 have a regular<br />
cervical smear test. This can be undertaken at any time when you are not<br />
bleeding. We also <strong>of</strong>fer routine chlamydia screening at this test. Please<br />
make a 20 minute appointment with a female Nurse.<br />
Eating Disorders<br />
We run an eating disorders clinic at the <strong>practice</strong> each Tuesday and Thursday<br />
throughout the year. New patients may self refer and can book an initial<br />
appointment at reception. Clinics are held on Tuesday and Thursday between<br />
9.00am and 4.00pm.<br />
Dieticians<br />
Dieticians are available to work with patients. Referral is arranged by the<br />
doctors.<br />
Treatment for Warts<br />
Liquid nitrogen treatment for warts (and other lesions) is available in the<br />
<strong>practice</strong> on Tuesdays and Thursdays – after 10am.<br />
Minor Operations<br />
Several <strong>of</strong> the doctors perform minor surgery at the <strong>practice</strong>. Please make a<br />
routine doctor’s appointment to discuss this.<br />
Phlebotomy Service<br />
This is provided by the Practice Health Care Assistants.<br />
Pharmacist-Led Clinics<br />
Some clinics are led by the Pharmacist from Weldricks. These will include<br />
consultations for asthma review, malaria prescribing, acne and the oral<br />
contraceptive pill. The reception staff will make the necessary arrangements.<br />
Prescriptions<br />
Please allow 48hrs for collection. Prescriptions which have not been collected<br />
by 5pm on a Friday evening, are lodged at the weekend with Weldrick’s<br />
Pharmacy (below the Practice) on Glossop Road - and may be collected and/or<br />
dispensed from there on a Saturday morning before 1pm. Tel 0114 2761321<br />
Medicals<br />
As medicals required for travel, employment or leisure are not provided by the<br />
NHS, there is a charge for these services. Details <strong>of</strong> fees are available at<br />
Reception and on our website.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> Counselling Service<br />
Tel 22 24 134 Hours 9.00 - 12.30 & 2.00 - 5.00pm in term time. Hours may vary<br />
during vacation.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> Counselling Service, situated at 36 Wilkinson Street, <strong>of</strong>fers a<br />
free <strong>of</strong> charge, confidential service to all members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> community.<br />
It provides an opportunity to think and talk, in confidence, about difficulties,<br />
experiences, feelings, fears, thoughts anxieties and problems that may be<br />
concerning you now or have done in the past.<br />

Out <strong>of</strong> Hours Services Nights,<br />
Weekends & Bank Holidays<br />

Overnight, at weekends and on public holidays, a doctor is always on call for<br />
emergencies – to give advice or visit as appropriate. As we use the Out <strong>of</strong> Hours<br />
Collaborative, it will not be a <strong>University</strong> Health Service Doctor who deals with<br />
your call. Calls will be answered by Local Care Direct then transferred to the GP<br />
Collaborative where all calls will be triaged by a Doctor. When appropriate, the<br />
Out <strong>of</strong> Hours Collaborative may ask you to attend their surgery premises at<br />
The Northern General or arrange to visit you, as appropriate.<br />
Alternatively, you may phone NHS Direct on 0845 46 47, who will help you to<br />
determine the service you require. Phone or visit the <strong>Sheffield</strong> GP Health<br />
Centre on Broad lane (0114 241 2700) which is open until 8pm daily.<br />

Advice and Information<br />
Meningitis and Meningococcal Disease www.Meningitis-Trust.Org.Uk<br />
Many <strong>of</strong> you coming to <strong>University</strong> will have been vaccinated against Meningitis C.<br />
For those who have not, vaccination is free and is available at the <strong>University</strong><br />
Health Service.<br />
Meningitis is inflammation <strong>of</strong> the tissues that cover the brain and spinal cord.<br />
It can be caused by bacteria or viruses. Bacterial meningitis is the most serious<br />
form and is most usually caused by the meningococcal bug. This bug can also<br />
cause blood poisoning (septicaemia). Although these illnesses are rare, they are<br />
serious and need treatment. Symptoms <strong>of</strong> meningitis include:- headache, fever,<br />
vomiting, stiff neck and dislike <strong>of</strong> bright lights. Symptoms <strong>of</strong> meningococcal<br />
septicaemia include:- fever, cold hands and feet, muscle and joint pains,<br />
drowsiness and a rash. Symptoms can appear in any order and not everyone<br />
gets all these symptoms. Meningococcal septicaemia can occur with or without<br />
meningitis. Someone with meningitis or septicaemia will usually become ill very<br />
rapidly. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT SOMEONE<br />
WHO IS ILL, particularly if their condition is deteriorating.<br />
ASK YOUR FRIENDS TO KEEP AN EYE ON YOU IF YOU ARE STAYING IN BED<br />
WITH FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS AND CONTACT A DOCTOR IF YOU ARE WORRIED.<br />
Rights and Responsibilities<br />
All medical records are strictly confidential and information will not be given to<br />
anyone without your express permission. However, from time to time, the<br />
Primary Care Trust performs an audit for which medical records are made<br />
available and patients’ written consent is sought.<br />
You may also view your medical record or obtain a copy. Any copies requested<br />
are charged for. A Request to View Medical Records form is available on the<br />
UHS web pages. If for any reason you wish to view your Medical Record, please<br />
complete, sign and return this form to the Reception Office Manager, Mrs Gina<br />
Down who will contact you to make the necessary arrangements.<br />
For requests for information from your medical record, please allow 7 days<br />
notice.<br />

Patients are asked to keep appointments or cancel in good time if necessary.<br />
Patients who habitually do not attend their appointments, may be asked to<br />
leave the Practice. Patients who are violent or abusive to staff or other patients<br />
will be excluded from the Practice List. The Practice has a written policy for the<br />
removal <strong>of</strong> patients from the List.<br />
NHS Registration<br />
REGISTRATION usually takes place during Intro/Freshers’ Week, prior to the<br />
first week <strong>of</strong> the first semester. Registration with the <strong>University</strong> Health Service<br />
is open to all students registered with the <strong>University</strong> who have a <strong>Sheffield</strong><br />
address, and their partners and children, who live within the boundary detailed<br />
in this <strong>leaflet</strong>.<br />
At Registration, if an NHS number is provided, you will be issued with YOUR PIN<br />
NUMBER to access the on-line appointment system. Students who do not have<br />
an NHS number (ie new international students) please call at reception,<br />
approximately 6 weeks after registration, by which time the NHS number<br />
should have been issued to the <strong>University</strong> Health Service.<br />
New patients registering at other times, please go to the UHS web site and<br />
follow the Registration Instructions.<br />
The NHS Direct Self Help Guide is available on the NHS Direct web site.<br />
This will help you manage self-limiting, minor illnesses (see web addresses).<br />
PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU KEEP US INFORMED OF YOUR CURRENT,<br />
SHEFFIELD ADDRESS & CURRENT TELEPHONE NUMBER & THAT YOU LET US<br />
KNOW WHEN YOU MOVE AWAY FROM SHEFFIELD OR LEAVE THE UK.<br />
Non NHS charges<br />
The Practice charges for Non NHS provision <strong>of</strong> services including most travel<br />
vaccinations. Current charges are:-<br />

Disabled Access<br />
The Practice at 53 Gell Street has a disabled ramp accessed via the car park.<br />
In addition there is a lift to the upper floor.<br />

Home Visits<br />
If you feel very unwell, please telephone the <strong>practice</strong> for advice before 10.30am.<br />
A Doctor or Nurse will discuss your symptoms with you and arrange for a<br />
doctor to visit if necessary. However, if at all possible, we prefer to see patients<br />
at the surgery where full investigation and treatment facilities are available.<br />
If you become ill later in the day, please try to telephone before 5.00pm.<br />
Contacting the GP by Phone<br />
Patients needing to speak to a doctor should contact reception and the<br />
necessary arrangements with be made. The GP will telephone you back at a<br />
convenient time.<br />
Sickness Absence<br />
<strong>University</strong> regulations only require a Doctor’s certificate for continuous<br />
absence <strong>of</strong> more than 7 days, or in the case <strong>of</strong> exams, extension to work<br />
deadlines or recurrent illness. Please complete the special circumstances form<br />
available from the Student Services Information Desk (SIDS) in the Union, or<br />
on line at www.sheffield.ac.uk/health. If you are ill during an examination,<br />
you must see a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner the same day.<br />

The NHS for International Students<br />
The NHS and how is works can seem very complicated if you have never had to<br />
use the system before.<br />
In the first place you are only eligible to use the NHS if you are:<br />
• An EU Student<br />
• A non-EU student on a course lasting more than six months<br />
• A non-EU student from a country with a reciprocal arrangement with the<br />
United Kingdom.<br />

What will you be asked to pay for?<br />
Any medication the doctor prescribes for you*. Currently there is a standard<br />
charge <strong>of</strong> £7.20 for all prescription drugs.<br />
Any dental treatment within the NHS scheme. You are expected to pay a<br />
percentage <strong>of</strong> the fee (if you see an NHS dentist)<br />
The cost <strong>of</strong> eye tests and glasses or contact lenses.<br />

You are only permitted to be registered with one general practitioner at any<br />
time.<br />
