Padilla earns USBC
Gold coach status
ARLINGTON — Stephen
Padilla of Mansfield, Texas, has
logged more than a decade of
experience as a certified bowling
coach and recently reached
the pinnacle of his field by
earning Gold-level coaching
status from the United States
Bowling Congress Coaching
Certification and Development
department.
Padilla, 36, is a USBC
Coaching Specialist at the
International Bowling Campus
in Arlington, and his primary
responsibilities are organizing
and conducting Silver certification
classes, serving as a
mentor to many USBC-certified
coaches and overseeing USBC's
Regional Facilities program.
He also spends time offering
his expertise at the International
Training and Research
Center, the home of the Team
USA bowling program, as an
assistant coach.
"Bowling was a part of my
plan when I entered college,
and thanks to persistence, hard
work and some good fortune
in the industry, working in the
bowling center and actually
competing, I've gotten this
amazing opportunity," Padilla
said. "People coach many years
to get to this level, and because
of other opportunities, such
as my first coaching position
offered by Gold coach Richard
Shockley, and several great
The process of becoming a
USBC Gold coach, the highest
level one can achieve through
USBC, is similar to obtaining
a doctorate in a field of study.
Currently, there are 23 active
Gold coaches.
Candidates are required
to demonstrate knowledge
of the latest techniques and
information through practical
application and discussion. The
final review program requires
a coach to conduct a class,
participate in an oral exam and
give lessons to bowlers of various
skill levels, which includes
lesson plans and a ball-motion
study. The final review board
consists of active USBC Gold
coaches and USBC staff.
"Stephen has dedicated
much of his life and career to
helping others improve and
excel on the lanes, and he has
worked very hard to become
our newest USBC Gold coach,"
said USBC Director of Coaching
Certification and Development
Carolyn Dorin-Ballard. "We
congratulate him on his dedication
and proudly welcome him
into this elite group."
Padilla graduated from
Florida State University in
2000 with a bachelor's degree
FOUNDED AND PUBLISHED BY JOE GENNARO FROM 1956-2009
in nutrition and fitness and
immediately found employment
in the bowling industry at
the Kegel Training Center in
Florida. He earned his USBC
Bronze certification in 2002
and Silver in 2004. He moved
into his current role with USBC
in 2008.
His personal bowling career
started at age 2 with help from
his parents, who were his first
coaches on the lanes and allowed
him to sit in on his first
coaching class about 10 years
later. Growing up in a military
family, bowling was one of the
few constants on every military
base.
The highlight of Padilla's
bowling career came in 2009
when he and his wife, former
Team USA member Brenda
Padilla, claimed the Regular
Doubles title at the USBC Open
Championships in Las Vegas
with a record score of 1,566.
"The things I had done in
bowling leading up to that day
in Las Vegas actually helped
me more than I expected,"
Padilla said. "Coaching helped
me see things differently
and make better decisions. I
didn't have to focus as much
on the physical things to be
successful.
"That experience, along
with becoming a Gold coach,
means a great deal to me, but
they're different. They both
have great emotional value and
make me extremely proud, and
it's amazing to be able to reach
top level as both a coach and a
player."
Brooks is
back at PSB
Jamie Brooks is re-activating
his status as President of Plano
Super Bowl. The 2009 Proprietor
of the Year
for the Texas
BPAA and the
2010 National
Proprietor of the
Year has recently
resumed
his day-to-day
leadership at
PSB. His said
his goal is to get Plano back to
level it was, when he considered
it a premium center. “It
was great before and I want to
bring it back,” Brooks said.
This will be a permanent
switch, “this was a center ran
by lifetime bowlers, and the
bowlers are back,” he added.
“I’m excited to see my old
friends over there, and meeting
new ones.”
Random Thoughts
Welcome to our last Random
Thoughts column for the
year. I would like to start by
thanking our readers for their
continued support and interest
in The Bowling News, but most
importantly their interest in
BOWLING.
I would also like to thank
our staff of writers and
contributors. To our weekly
folks, Daceman, Leisha, Tyson,
Kayla, and Mark, I hope you
understand that this does not
work without you. There’s not
much if any weekly bowling
articles/publications out there
and your constant input,
columns, interviews and stories
are helping keep the interest in
this great game of ours. To our
monthly writers, Don, Aaron,
Chuck, Susie, and now Xeno,
thank you very much for the
depth at which you take your
writing, and the thoughtfulness
of where your opinions
and stories come from!
Have a fun and safe holiday
season to all, and see you
again in THE BOWLING NEWS
While having a great conversation
with Chris Johnson
and the Nation Sensation the
other day, CJ mentioned one
of his goals is being in the
Hall of Fame. Not the HoF you
might expect though, he badly
wants to be in the SASBA Hall
of Fame. No sweat I thought,
as he will easily win plenty of
SASBA tournaments when he
turns 50, in 15 years. It takes a
minimum of 10 SASBA titles to
get you in their HoF. “No, no,”
A quick re-hash from a Clint
Dacy Off The Sheet article from
September. In handicapping
his fantasy football this year,
he made a wild prediction and
statement from draft night.
“At our draft I typically get
lambasted about how bad my
team is and everyone wants to
side bet me, but this year the
crickets in the room were loud
and clear at just how good my
team might be. I’ve never won
a fantasy football league before
in almost twenty years of playing
so it would be nice to get
a victory,” per Daceman and
OTS. Daceman did not make
the playoffs this year, as usual.
I stole the last playoff spot from
him by way of a better division
record. Tough times ahead for
Coach/GM Daceman of “Unsportsmanlike
Conduct”. The
clock is ticking on his fantasy
football career.
To close this week, I just
saw in the Bowlers Journal
International Cyber Report,
where they reported that Euless
native, David Garber is no
longer with Station Casinos in
Las Vegas. He was the Corporate
Director of Bowling Sales,
and supposedly that position
was eliminated. Sorry to hear
that for David.
This week’s high female
279-220 for a 759 series in the
Classic Trios league at AMF
Richardson Lanes. Mitch is a
Practice Administrator for two
two Daughters, Kelsey is 22
and Courtney is 15.
What is your high series? 797
How many 300’s have you
bowled? 2, the last one was in
2008. I probably have more
299’s than anyone.
Thoughts on your big night?
I’ve been working with Jim
Stephens the last few months
and things are starting to come
together. I’m getting consistency
and confidence, and it
all started at the TCBA All-Star
tournament where I averaged
245 for the 19 games.
What ball did you throw? I
threw three different balls, the
Storm Anarchy, Hot Rod and
Lucid.
Who drills your balls? Chad
Newman has been drilling
them over the summer, and
that has been working very
well also. Changing my pitches
has made a huge difference.
What is your all-time favorite
bowling ball? The Burgandy
Hammer, but I do love Storm
balls now.
What is your all-time high
average? 217
How long have you been
bowling? Since I was 5 so 39
years now. My mom and dad
both bowled. (Dallas bowling
legends Sammye and Tommy
Ragland). We grew up in the
Air Force so bowling was
something we could afford and
our whole family did it. I have
two sisters, and I’m the only
one that didn’t marry a bowler,
but neither of them bowl
anymore.
Who is your favorite pro
bowler? Walter Ray Williams
and Earl Anthony. I love their
styles and they are both great
sportsman for bowling. I also
enjoyed watching Donna
Adamek.
Most memorable bowling
moment? I bowled a 300 on
my high school Senior Night
at Golden Triangle. That was
fun because most of my friends
didn’t think bowling was too
“The quickest and best way to
cool, but shooting 300 was.
Another big moment was when
I got Bowler of the Year in
Dallas in 2002. My mom was
there and had won it before,
but it was recognition of hard
work and doing well.
What lessons has the game
taught you? Bowling is a
family. I love that atmosphere,
and bowlers are a very helpful
group. When there are hard
times and people are in need
bowlers come together. I have
always loved to be able to sit
around and share bowling
stories, it’s a memorable sport
for all those that participate.
By Leisha Murr
I can’t believe Christmas is
already almost here. I’m on the
bah-humbug train almost every
year heading into the holidays.
It takes me most of the month
to get into the giving spirit of
the season.
This year I think I got
off the train at the first stop.
Thanks to a good deal on a
television I wanted for myself,
I braved the crowds and got
out and bought most of my
gifts with all the crazy people
on Black Friday. It’s definitely
not a fun time to go shopping,
waiting in line to get into a
store and hopefully still being
able to get the items you are
wanting when you get there.
Luckily, I was able to get the
things on my list in a couple of
stores without any casualties.
All of the other gifts I
needed to buy this year I
was able to order online. I’ll
tell you, it’s much easier to
shop the web and have gifts
delivered to your doorstep than
to run all over town searching
for that perfect gift. Plus, I’m
earning those very important
airline miles. If I buy enough
gifts, eventually the airline will
gift me a free flight!
I think I may have to check
out a new vacation destination
in the coming year. Don’t get
me wrong, I still love Vegas
and will frequent there, but I
didn’t go anywhere else this
year except for bowling trips.
Maybe I need to find a nice
beach somewhere? Oh, who am
I kidding? I can’t spend a day
at the beach without turning
into a lobster. A cabana on the
beach with cocktails, and a
nice cabana boy might work
out just fine though!
Nobody sent me any eligible
bachelors as I requested for my
birthday, so if any of you are
feeling generous this Christmas,
I’m still in the market
for a good man. Other suitable
gifts would include things to
eat or drink, and in return I
will try to be merry and stay
off the bah-humbug train the
rest of the year! I’m not sure
how much good that will do
any of you since this is the
last time you will have to hear
from me until the New Year.
All kidding aside, I hope
you all have a wonderful
Christmas. For some of you,
the holidays are some of the
happiest times of the year, but
for others they can be hard
both financially and emotionally.
Some people are filled
with time with family and
friends over the holidays and
others are lonely or depressed.
So, take the time this Christmas
to spread the cheer, share
ARLINGTON — Parker Bohn
Bohn captured the PBA
his 33rd career PBA title and
bested Sean Rash, Montgomery,
PBA announces 2013
PBA50 Tour schedule
New stops, ESPN-televised finale part of new PBA50 Tour season
SEATTLE — A new name,
new venues, a season-long
points competition leading to
an ESPN-televised finale and
a crop of new star players
will highlight the 2013 PBA50
Tour season, the Professional
Bowlers Association announced
today.
The 2013 PBA50 Tour
(formerly PBA Senior Tour)
schedule will consist of 11
tournaments with new stops
in Welch, Minn., Tampa, Fla.
(tentative), and Trussville, Ala.
The season-long point
competition will qualify
the top three players for the
ESPN-televised PBA50 Tour
Finals which will be a stepladder
event conducted during
the 2013 PBA World Series of
Bowling V next November.
Also, selected PBA50 Tour
events will be webcast live
on pba.com's Online Bowling
Channel Xtra Frame. Details
regarding the televised finals
and Xtra Frame schedule will
be announced later.
"We are thrilled to be bringing
a PBA50 final back to TV,”
said PBA Commissioner Tom
Clark. “A national audience
will see first-hand that the
competition on the PBA50 Tour
is intense, important and the
crop of players eligible will
excite all bowling fans. The
PBA is committed to its over-50
membership and proud to be
bringing the best of the best to
a national television audience."
The PBA50 Tour will also
include other changes including
a revised format advancing
more players to match play in
selected events that attract 120
or more entries.
The Super Senior prize
fund – for the age 60-andolder
players who finish out
of the regular prize list – will
also be revised. In previous
years, Super Senior cash spots
were awarded based on total
entries. For 2013, cash spots
will be awarded at a ratio of
1:6 Super Senior entries, with
a minimum of eight and a
maximum of 10 cashing in
each tournament.
Las Vegas will continue
to host the PBA50 Tour’s two
major championships with
Just Paying
Attention By Mark London
Mark@TheBowlingNews.net
On the second week of
December for the past half century
or so, the defending U.S.
Open champions roll a threegame
series on Chicago television
for an annual competition
known as “Beat The Champs”.
Run by the Chicagoland Bowling
Proprietors Association,
it raises monies for various
Chicago Sun-Times newspaper
charities. For all of this year’s
$3 entry fee (was only $1 for
many years), enter your league
series on the punch card in
participating centers the first
week of December and wait
to see what scores the pros
post on the Christmas Day
target score show. If your score
does as the name implies, you
win an ‘I Beat The Champ’
patch. However, if your score
is best of a league with 100%
participation or one of the top
five scores in the house, you
qualify for several more levels
of qualifying until the 24-man
or 24-woman final round. Top
prize is a new automobile,
lately a Ford Focus. Second
through 10th places receive flat
screen TVs, while 11th to 24th
places get bowling equipment.
Twenty years ago this week,
a native Texan was part of the
most famous pro target score
show in the 52-year history of
“Beat The Champs”. This onehour
show has been seen on
the local cable sports channel,
ComcastSportsNet, since 1993.
But this 1992 show and earlier
shows were a Christmas Day
tradition on WGN Television,
seen on cable systems all over
the country since the early
80s, as any Cubs fan could
remind you. At Lawn Lanes
in suburban Oak Lawn, site
of Gary Dickinson’s ‘83 U.S.
Open and Mark Roth’s 1984
U.S. Open wins, Austin’s own
Robert Lawrence rolled games
of 248, 268, and 299 for an 815
series. One factor making this
score more impressive was at
the time a handful of Chicago
centers, this house included,
were proud of their tougher
league conditions.
The defending U.S. Women’s
champion, PWBA and USBC
Hall of Famer Tish Johnson,
was alone on the left side with
Lawrence on the right. The
stage was set for an hour of
bowling not soon forgotten,
especially by the hundred or
so of us to see it in person.
Lawrence recently recalled rolling
one of only two 800 series
seen on national television in
the 90s.
“I played right of the 6-7
board the entire time,” Lawrence
explains. “And with Tish
being on the show with me,
there was just me out there
on my side. We were both
just having so much fun I had
no clue what I was shooting.
Didn’t even know I had 800
until it was all over.”
I remember hearing at the
time it may have been as high
as eight ‘I Beat The Champ’
patches, but the official number
was four. To give you some
perspective, the 52,703 league
bowlers paying the $1 ‘Beat
The Champs’ entry fee raised
$59,274.12 for Chicago Sun-
Times charities. Besides the
four patches given out for the
815 series, Tish Johnson’s 648
set was bested by 971 females,
thus 975 patches were awarded.
competition last week at AMF
Showplace Euless Lanes with a
Two Mixed Up league production.
Val Goss rounded out the
top score for the ladies with a
rollicking 244-258-215 = 717
Full House set.
Olin Gibbins and Eric Rydberg
shared high-game honors with
Hamm as each recorded awardwinning
12-baggers. John Kuhn
took runner-up honors with a
near perfect 299 single while
Patrick Adams finished with a
296 game.
The CBPA gave out 11,426 ‘I
Beat The Champ’ patches.
“I was also told a few
months later that I made the
charity a lot more money since
they didn’t have to buy as
many patches to give to all the
bowlers that beat my score. I
was told that only 3 people got
patches that year when they
normally hand out hundreds,
and even thousands a few
years.
I was proud afterwards to
find out that I had set the new
all-time high series for that
event,” Lawrence added.
An overlooked point in the
815 series was a 17-bagger from
the 8th frame of the second
game to the eleventh ball of
Game 3. You don’t see that
every day, not even these days.
As the end of the show neared,
the cheering from the normally
sedate crowd got louder and
louder with each strike.
It may have also saved
Columbia 300’s first resin ball.
Reactive resin had just gone
mainstream earlier in the year
with the NuLine XCalibur and
Brunswick’s Purple Rhino Pro.
About a month before this
taping, Steve Jaros rolled a
129 game with a Pro Hook in
the opening match of the PBA
Brunswick Memorial World
Open, ironically about 45
minutes north of Oak Lawn in
Lake Zurich, Ill.
Lawrence, currently the
Brunswick Bowling-Consumer
Division Southwest U.S. Product
Specialist offered this about
Columbia’s first resin equipment,
“The Pro Hook went on
to be a good seller for Columbia
300. I was on staff at the time.
Funny thing too, about that
ball, was that we as staffers got
to throw that ball and the Pro
Hook Extreme for the first time
as test balls while we were in
San Antonio for the Columbia
300 Open at Astro Bowl. Well, I
guess it was the rough surface
there that had almost all of us
loving the Extreme over the
regular Pro Hook. We all know
how that eventually turned out
though. Nobody wanted the No
Hook Extreme.”
Barnes, Parkin Kick Off PBA
Season with WBT Titles
LAS VEGAS – Chris Barnes
of Double Oak, Texas, and
Missy Parkin of Lake Forest,
Calif., successfully concluded
two years of international
travel when they captured
Bayer Advanced Aspirin World
Bowling Tour men’s and
women’s finals titles to kick
off the 2012-13 Professional
Bowlers Association television
season at South Point Hotel and
Casino.
Barnes, a 14-time PBA Tour
champion, defeated reigning
WBT men’s champion Mika
Koivuniemi of Finland, 244-
228, while Parkin defeated Liz
Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y.,
238-190, in the women’s finals
during the GEICO PBA World
Series of Bowling. Both finals,
which featured three players
who qualified by earning
points in World Tenpin Bowling
Association-PBA International
Tour events over a span of two
years, aired Sunday on ESPN.
Both champions earned $20,000.
Barnes, who won the
Columbia 300 Vienna Open in
Austria in October to lock up
his berth in the WBT men’s
finals, edged Mike Fagan of
Dallas, 258-244, in the semifinal
match before closing with
a string of six strikes for a
come-from-behind victory over
his close friend, Koivuniemi, in
the title match.
“Any win feels good,” Barnes
said. “Mika and I always
have good matches. I’ve been
fortunate the last three times,
but I’m pretty sure it’ll even out
whether I like it or not.”
The key to Barnes’ victory
was three 10 pins left by his
long-time international rival
on the right lane in the third,
seventh and ninth frames.
“I left a couple of solid 10s
on that lane myself,” Barnes
said. “I knew that lane was
thought was pretty good that
didn’t even get back to the
Forced to finish his game
on the tricky right lane after
Koivuniemi’s misfortune in
the ninth frame gave him an
opening, Barnes made a critical
adjustment and threw three
strikes in the 10th frame. The
first strike was the one that
iced the title.
“I knew I was going to
move right and have to stay
firm with the shot,” Barnes
said. “Earlier on in my career
I didn’t commit to that shot
very well, but I committed to
it, and made the shot I wanted
to throw. It didn’t quite get up
to high flush, but it was good
enough today.”
As part of their ongoing
rivalry on television, Barnes
and Koivuniemi make a side
bet that has involved things
like the gaudy Madras plaid
pair of pants Koivuniemi was
forced to wear on television the
last time he lost.
“We had a jersey bet on
this one,” Barnes said of his
WBT win. “I, or my fans, or his
daughters will get to design a
jersey that he’ll get to wear on
a future TV show. And pretty
much anything goes as long as
it’s legal for TV.”
In the women’s finals,
Johnson advanced to the title
match after a thrilling 267-260
victory over PBA Tour titlist
Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J. But
Johnson’s strike shot evaporated
in the title match. A 4-6-7
split in the second frame and
a 4-6 in the fourth put her in a
hole she couldn’t escape.
“I’ve come in second a lot
lately,” said Parkin, who lost
to Chicago’s Diandra Asbaty
in the Australian Masters title
match prior to the WSOB and
finished second to Kulick in the
U.S. Women’s Open earlier in
the year. “Today I wasn’t going
I needed to throw 10 really
good shots, and I feel like I did.
Luckily the pins fell my way
and it was enough to win.”
But for Parkin, the victory
made her international travels
worth the effort.
“This year all of the travel
has been particularly hard
being away from family and
