this connector, you can still play CD audio through the computer<br />

speakers by connecting the CD-ROM drive’s headphone<br />

jack to the audio adapter’s line in jack with an<br />

external cable.<br />

The line in, line out, <strong>and</strong> speaker connectors on an audio<br />

adapter all use the same 1/8-inch mini-jack socket. The three<br />

jacks are usually labeled, but when setting up a computer on or<br />

under a desk, these labels on the back of the PC can be difficult<br />

to read. One of the most common reasons a PC fails to produce<br />

any sound is that the speakers are plugged into the wrong<br />

socket.<br />

If your sound card, microphone, <strong>and</strong> speakers aren’t color-coded,<br />

do it yourself. See Chapter 1, “General Technical Reference,” for the<br />

PC99 st<strong>and</strong>ards for color-coding for audio <strong>and</strong> other ports.<br />

Connectors for Advanced Features<br />

Many of the newest sound cards are designed for advanced gaming,<br />

DVD audio playback, <strong>and</strong> sound production uses, <strong>and</strong> have additional<br />

connectors:<br />

• MIDI In/MIDI Out—Some advanced sound cards don’t<br />

require you to convert the game port (joystick port) to MIDI<br />

interfacing by offering these ports on a separate external<br />

connector. This permits you to use a joystick <strong>and</strong> have an<br />

external MIDI device connected at the same time. Its typical<br />

location is in an external device.<br />

• SPDIF (also called SP/DIF) In <strong>and</strong> SPDIF Out—The<br />

Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format connector receives digital<br />

audio signals directly from compatible devices without<br />

converting them to analog format first. Its typical location is<br />

in an external device. SPDIF interfaces are also referred to by<br />

some vendors as Dolby Digital interfaces.<br />

• CD SPDIF—Connects compatible CD-ROM drives with<br />

SPDIF interfacing to the digital input of the sound card. Its<br />

typical location is on the side of the audio card.<br />

• TAD In—Connects modems with Telephone Answering<br />

Device support to the sound card for sound processing of<br />

voice messages. Its typical location is on the side of the<br />

audio card.
