A Snapshot of the Border<br />

million in 1990 to 3.7 million in 2000, during the decade of rapid<br />

economic and population growth (Figure 2). In 2000, just more<br />

than 1.3 million vehicles were registered in Mexican border cities<br />

(Figure 3). A significant source of mobile air pollution is emissions<br />

from vehicles delayed at the border <strong>for</strong> inspection and <strong>for</strong> general<br />

entry into the country. Truck crossings at Texas border towns have<br />

increased since 1990, particularly at Laredo (Figure 4).<br />
