Safe behavior for motorists and child pedestrians to create safer, more walk-able communities. Safe Kids Walk This Way Teaching children how to walk safely is only part of the equation. In 2009, Safe Kids Columbus completed the first ever study of distracted driving in school zones. 15% of drivers in Columbus’ school zones are distracted where children are most vulnerable. Distractions include cell phone/electronics, food/smoking, reaching/looking behind, grooming, and reading. In collaboration with Safe Routes To School to improve pedestrian environments, Safe Kids celebrated International Walk To School Day with 2 elementary schools, conducted 3 Pedestrian Safety Programs & 3 Halloween Safety Programs, and handed out reflector bags at the city-wide Trick or Treat Event. 4,011 people educated 5,159 educational literature distributed 2,034 protective gear distributed www.safekidscolumbusga.com (706) 321-6183 12
