Dear Coalition,
The phenomenal success of the 2009 Safe Kids Program is but a reflection of
the ever-increasing dedication and enthusiasm of each volunteer who gave selfless
hours of dedication. We could not allow the 2009 season to come to an end without
recognizing your outstanding efforts.
Additionally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Lead Agency,
Columbus Health Department ,who has supported the Safe Kids program for 11 years.
We would not be where we are today without the support of Dr. Zsolt Koppányi, Ed
Saidla, and Pam Middleton of the Columbus Health Department. Thank you to all of our
Partners in the community that financially enable us to hold events and reach our target
population of children 14 and under. Thank you to the Safe Kids Board who deserves
to be recognized because of their instrumental and vital role in the development and
success of Safe Kids. Also, a thank you to the Safe Kids staff Jacquetta Jackson and
Ella Tull for their willingness to go the extra mile for Safe Kids Columbus.
Serving the children and families in Columbus has been made possible because
of each of you dedicating your time to keep children safe. As we move forward in 2010,
my hope is that we will increase the amount of children and families that we can help
stay safe as we continue to provide the appropriate safety equipment. The plans for
2010 will be an expansion on the good works already accomplished by Safe Kids
Columbus. We will be adding a Safe Sleep, Sports Injury, and the exploration of a
Safety Town project to our program outreach. I would like to take this opportunity to say
a heartfelt ―Thank You!‖ We look forward to working with you all again next year.
Sincerely,
Christy Hubbard
Dear Coalition,
President’s Letter
The success of Safe Kids is defined by a child safely reaching adulthood. That
success is only possible because of the important work we do together. My major role
as president of the Board is to help oversee the development of the 3-Year Strategic
Plan, Annual Action Plans, and help oversee the community assessment & evaluation
methods.
It is my pleasure to present our 2009 Annual Report which highlights the
accomplishments of the goals we set forth in our Strategic Plan. Every three years, we
assess our community’s long term needs and each year implement actions to meet
them. 2010 marks the end of our 2007-2010 Strategic Plan. We sincerely thank you
for your support and look forward to working with you during our upcoming journey.
In 2009, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Falls became more of a concern.
Safe Kids worked to raise awareness about these injury areas and will continue in our
upcoming endeavors.
It is the most awesome gift to hear a parent thank us by saying, ―If it wasn’t for your
commercial, I would not have known my child was in danger,‖ or ―It’s been a tough
financial year for my family, without Safe Kids, we would not have helmets for our
children.‖
We are extremely blessed with such a wonderful group of enthusiastic volunteers,
dedicated members, and generous partners and donors. Thank you for saving lives in
2009. We look forward to continuing the success of a strong community network as we
serve families and children together.
Sincerely,
Brian Giffin
Buckle Up
Motor-vehicle crash-related injuries are the #1
killer of children. By focusing on law enforcement in
2009, we have become the voice children
desperately need. This past year, we have
strengthened enforcement of child passenger safety
laws by educating Public Safety workers. We also
provided each patrolman with tools to help them
effectively communicate and enforce laws related to
child passenger safety.
Our community impact in 2009 reflects our
stronger relationship and collaboration with Public
Safety and their commitment to enforcement.
Ready To Roll
“…trust me, you probably do not want to go through what I did…” Will Harris
Will Harris is a 12 year old 6 th grader from Pacelli School on a
mission to let all kids know the importance of wearing a helmet. On August
4 th , 2009 he fell off his brand new bike and hit his head. Luckily, Will’s
friend was with him. They followed head injury precautions until he was
able to see a doctor later that day. His doctor diagnosed him with a mild
concussion and advised him to get a CAT Scan at the Medical Center.
That night, his head injury symptoms became severe. The Medical Center
found a 3 ½ inch fracture at the base of his skull—1/2 inch away from his
spine. ―I could have died or become paralyzed,‖ says Will, ―it’s a miracle, I
dodged a bullet.‖
For the next year Will can not do some of the fun sports and activities
that he enjoys because he has to be extra careful. Will’s advice:
Kids think helmets are not cool and won’t look good on them,
or people will make fun, but trust me, you probably do not
want to go through what I did. So, please make donations for
kids that cannot afford helmets.
Safe Kids is thankful for Will Harris’ safety and that he will make a full
recovery. Will presented his story of survival to 70 of our coalition
members on October 22, 2009.
Safe behavior for motorists and child pedestrians to
create safer, more walk-able communities.
Safe Kids
Walk This Way
Teaching children how to walk safely is only part of
the equation. In 2009, Safe Kids Columbus completed
the first ever study of distracted driving in school zones.
15% of drivers in Columbus’ school zones are distracted
where children are most vulnerable. Distractions include
cell phone/electronics, food/smoking, reaching/looking
behind, grooming, and reading.
In collaboration with Safe Routes To School to
improve pedestrian environments, Safe Kids celebrated
International Walk To School Day with 2 elementary
schools, conducted 3 Pedestrian Safety Programs & 3
Halloween Safety Programs, and handed out reflector
accurate instructional program designed to prepare young
adolescents for the profound responsibilities of nurturing and
protecting children. Potential babysitters learn lessons such as
how to look for dangers, how to handle situations, and what to
do in emergencies.
Safe Kids continues to work with local licensed daycares
and elementary school Pre-K Coordinators to teach children
about household poisons. The Safe Kids Children’s
Environmental Health Program continues to educate the
Safe Kids Worldwide is a global network of organizations
whose mission is to prevent accidental childhood injury, a
leading killer of children 14 and under. More than 450
coalitions in 16 countries bring together health and safety
experts, educators, corporations, foundations, governments
and volunteers to educate and protect families.
Safe Kids Worldwide was founded in 1987 as the National
SAFE KIDS Campaign by Children's National Medical Center
with support from Johnson & Johnson. There is no one device
or solution to prevent effectively all types of accidental
childhood injuries. Instead, Safe Kids combines several
factors to create programs that reduce injuries.
