<strong>APA</strong> <strong>Citations</strong> <strong>Rules</strong><br />

Document:<br />

Margins – 1 inch all sides, including top, bottom, left and right (p. 286).<br />

Font preference and size – The preferred font is 12-pt Times Roman or 12-pt. Courier (p. 285)<br />

Line Spacing – Double spacing should occur after every line of the document. This includes<br />

headings, footings, reference page, title page, and captions for figures and tables. (p. 286)<br />

Paragraph Indentation: Paragraphs should be indented 5 spaces or ½ inch. (p. 289)<br />

In text citation:<br />

Paraphrase & Summary – Include author’s last and date of publication in parentheses at end of<br />

sentence. Be sure to separate author’s last name and date by a comma. And don’t forget to add a<br />

period after the parentheses! Example: (Gutek, 2004). (p. 207)<br />

Quote – Include author’s last name, date, and page number where quote was found in<br />

parentheses at end of sentence. Be sure to add a comma after the author’s name and after the<br />

date. Add a “p” for the page number. And don’t forget the period after the parentheses!<br />

Example: (Gutek, 2004, p. 25). (p. 118)<br />

Reference list:<br />

Start Reference page on a new page.<br />

Title - The word Reference(s) should appear at the top of the page. It should be centered in the<br />

middle of the page. (p. 299)<br />

Line Spacing - Double space between each line. Each entry should have a hanging indent.<br />

(p.299)<br />

Order of entries: Alphabetical order by author. If there is no author use the title of the<br />

document. If more than one entry by the same author arrange by year beginning with the earliest<br />

publication. For other variations, see page 220 in your <strong>APA</strong> manual. (p. 220)
