Intramural Sports Rules<br />

MEN'S & WOMEN'S BASKETBALL<br />

RULES<br />

TEAM<br />

Each team may have a maximum <strong>of</strong> 5 players on the court during the game. All players must be<br />

male in the <strong>men's</strong> league and women in the wo<strong>men's</strong> league. <strong>The</strong> minimum number is 4. No<br />

current CSS intercollegiate <strong>basketball</strong> players are allowed to play in this league during their<br />

competitive season. If the intramural league is played during a time other than the collegiate<br />

competitive season, a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2 intercollegiate players is allowed per team roster.<br />

One person on the court must be deemed team captain. This person is the only one who may talk<br />

with the <strong>of</strong>ficials regarding ruling questions and interpretations.<br />

Before the game starts, each team member will need to check in with the game <strong>of</strong>ficial. You will<br />

need your CSS ID to check into the game. NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED TO PLAY<br />

WITHOUT A VALID CSS ID.<br />

Each team is allowed to have 15 people on its roster. Each team will be allowed to make changes<br />

to their roster up until the last regular season game. You may do this with the scorekeeper before<br />

the game begins. No new players are allowed to play in play<strong>of</strong>fs. Each person must play in one<br />

regular season game to be eligible for play-<strong>of</strong>fs. Each person is only allowed to be on one team<br />

roster per season.<br />

ELIGIBILITY - CSS varsity <strong>basketball</strong> players are not eligible to play during their primary<br />

season <strong>of</strong> competition.<br />

PLAYING AREA<br />

Basketball games will take place in the Burns Wellness Commons fieldhouse and also the Reif<br />

Recreation Center.<br />

EQUIPMENT<br />

Game balls will be provided by Campus Recreation. If agreed upon by both team captains and<br />

the <strong>of</strong>ficial, an alternate ball may be used.<br />

All players must wear clean, non-marking indoor athletic shoes. Jewelry is not allowed for safety<br />

reasons. Bandanas, hats, and baseball caps are not allowed; headbands and arm bands are<br />

allowed.<br />

No casts, braces, or any other material made <strong>of</strong> unyielding leather, plastic, plaster, metal or other<br />

substance, even though covered with s<strong>of</strong>t material, are allowed. Note: Knee braces will be<br />

permitted.

OFFICIALS<br />

<strong>The</strong>re will be two trained <strong>of</strong>ficials reffing games and one score keeper. All calls made by the<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficial are FINAL.<br />

GAME PLAY<br />

Game play will be governed by the <strong>rules</strong> <strong>of</strong> the NFHS with the following highlights and<br />

modifications:<br />

<strong>The</strong> game will consist <strong>of</strong> two 20-minute running time halves with a four minute break between<br />

halves. <strong>The</strong> clock will stop in the final two minutes <strong>of</strong> each half provided that the lead is less<br />

than 15 points. <strong>The</strong> clock will also stop during team and <strong>of</strong>ficial timeouts and for injuries.<br />

A goal is made when a live ball enters from above and goes through the hoop and net. Free<br />

throws will be awarded one point, all other successful shots will be awarded two or three points<br />

(3-pointer). <strong>The</strong>re will be a jump ball at center court to begin the game. <strong>The</strong>re will also be a jump<br />

ball to begin each overtime. Once contact is made, the ball is live.<br />

• In all other jump ball situations, the teams will alternate taking the ball out-<strong>of</strong>-bounds for<br />

a throw-in. <strong>The</strong> team that does not obtain possession <strong>of</strong> the first jump ball <strong>of</strong> the game<br />

starts the alternate possession procedure.<br />

PENALTIES AND VIOLATIONS<br />

Game play violations (i.e. travel, 3 seconds in the lane, double dribble, back court violation)<br />

called by the <strong>of</strong>ficial will result in a turnover and throw-in at the location <strong>of</strong> the violation by the<br />

opponent.<br />

Offense will have 10-seconds to get the ball across half court. Failure to move the ball past half<br />

court in ten seconds will result in a turnover. <strong>The</strong> opponent will be awarded the ball and a throwin<br />

will occur from the sideline.<br />

<strong>The</strong> inbounding team will have five seconds to put the ball into play otherwise will lose<br />

possession to the opposing team.<strong>The</strong> ball will be put in play once it is released by the inbounder.<br />

A player may not hold or dribble the ball for more than 5 seconds if he is being closely guarded.<br />

This will result in a turnover.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> player in control <strong>of</strong> the ball is considered closely guarded when a defensive player is<br />

in a defensive stance no more than six feet away. NOTE: If a player changes his<br />

possession from holding to dribble or vice versa, he/she is entitled to a new 5 second<br />

count.<br />

PERSONAL FOULS AND FREE THROWS<br />

A personal foul (illegal use <strong>of</strong> the hand, hand check, holding, blocking, pushing or charging, or<br />

player-control) that occurs on the ground will result in one team foul and the ball will go to the<br />

opponent.

A personal foul that occurs during the act <strong>of</strong> shooting will result in one team foul and the person<br />

who was fouled will go to the free throw line (2 free throws for a missed shot, 1 free throw for a<br />

made shot.)<br />

Players along the free throw lane and behind the free throw line extended may not enter the key<br />

until the ball has been released AND hits the rim <strong>of</strong> the hoop.<br />

A free throw violation by the opposing team results in another free throw. A free throw violation<br />

by the shooting team will result in a loss <strong>of</strong> that free throw. A simultaneous free throw violation<br />

by both teams will result in a jump ball situation and the alternating possession arrow will<br />

determine who gets to in-bound the ball.<br />

On the seventh team foul in each half, the opposing team is awarded a one-and-one free throw<br />

situation. On the tenth team foul in each half, teams will be awarded two foul shots on all<br />

personal fouls.<br />

INTENTIONAL, FLAGRANT AND TECHNICAL FOULS<br />

Intentional, flagrant, or technical fouls are penalized with an automatic two points awarded to the<br />

<strong>of</strong>fended team AND possession <strong>of</strong> the ball. Flagrant fouls are grounds for ejection from the<br />

game. TEAM CAPTAINS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CONTROLLING THE CONDUCT OF<br />

ALL PLAYERS ON HIS/HER TEAM.<br />

Technical fouls will be assessed for unsportsmanlike conduct, too many players on the court,<br />

delay <strong>of</strong> game, and too many timeouts. A player may be disqualified if the player receives one<br />

direct technical foul and will be disqualified for receiving 2 direct technical fouls.<br />

Technical fouls include, but are not limited to:<br />

A) Disrespectfully addressing or contacting an <strong>of</strong>ficial or gesturing in such a manner to indicate<br />

resentment.<br />

B) Using pr<strong>of</strong>anity or vulgarity; taunting, baiting, or ridiculing another player; or pointing a<br />

finger at or making obscene gestures toward another player.<br />

C) Faking being fouled.<br />

D) Intentionally or flagrantly contacting an opponent when the ball is dead.<br />

E) Intentionally slapping the backboard or hanging on rim or net . <strong>The</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> intent is at the<br />

discression <strong>of</strong> the game <strong>of</strong>ficials.<br />

Any player involved in a fight will automatically be EJECTED from the game and suspended<br />

from the league. Involvement in a fight includes but is not limited to instigation, retaliation,<br />

physical or mental intimidation, and being an accessory to a fight. Participants who leave the<br />

bench area during a fight will be ejected from that contest and face a 365-day suspension from<br />

ALL Intramural activities.<br />

TIMEOUTS<br />

Each team will be allowed two 60-second timeouts per half, one time-out per overtime. Timeouts

do not carry over. Any player on the court may call a timeout, but it must be during a dead ball<br />

or when it is in control <strong>of</strong> a player on the team requesting a timeout.<br />

SUBSTITUTIONS<br />

Substitutions may be made when the ball is dead. A time out is not necessary. You must notify<br />

the scorekeeper before making the substitution, and wait for the court <strong>of</strong>ficial to wave you in.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is an unlimited number <strong>of</strong> substitutions per game.<br />

END OF GAME<br />

At the end <strong>of</strong> the game, the team with the most points win. If the score is tied, teams will play a<br />

3-minute overtime. <strong>The</strong>re will be a jump ball to begin the overtime period; the teams will not<br />

change baskets. If at the end <strong>of</strong> the overtime the score is still tied, each team will send five<br />

men/women to the free throw line to shoot one free throw each. <strong>The</strong> most free throws scored by<br />

one team will win the game.<br />

GAME FORFEIT<br />

All games will start at the designated times. Game time is forfeit time. NO EXCEPTIONS. <strong>The</strong><br />

fieldhouse clock will be the <strong>of</strong>ficial clock used to determine time.<br />

Co-Rec Basketball Rules<br />

Players: a minimum number <strong>of</strong> 2 men and 2 women per team<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ball: a wo<strong>men's</strong> <strong>basketball</strong> will be used<br />

Scoring: women earn 1 bonus point more for each field goal scored (3 points for regular basket<br />

and 4 points for a 3-pointer)<br />

Free Throws: women will shoot a bonus free throw for a foul on a field goal attempt (3 free<br />

throws for a regular field goal and 4 for a 3-point field goal attempt)<br />

SPORTMANSHIP<br />
