sediment cores. This concern for the mis-match of sampling-scales for the sediments
and fauna applies to all the studies described in this thesis.
Data analyses - The data for each species with a mean abundance of 2 or more
individuals per core for any one transect were checked for normality using the
Anderson-Darling test and for homogeneity of variance using the Bartlett test. Any
data not complying with these tests were log(x+1)-transformed before statistical
analysis. Any species data with a non-normal distribution or a heterogeneous variance
after transformation were analysed using non-parametric statistics. Variability along
each transect was assessed by either a One-way ANOVA test with a Tukey multiple
comparison test or a Kruskal-Wallis test using Minitab 10.0. In the event of a
significant Kruskal-Wallis test, a post hoc Tukey test was performed on the log(x+1)-
transformed data to indicate which plots were significantly different from each other.
