17.3.3. ASCII/ISO with Embedded Shift-Coded Kanji
If the input images contain embedded shift-code bytes and REQUEST_TYPE is
S'Translate_embedded_KANJI' (for PLUS) or SR$REQTYPE is 1 (for MASM), the READ
procedures remove the embedded shift-code bytes and return the images in internal
format. The character text is returned in the text buffer, and the attributes are returned
in the attribute table. Subsection 16.2 describes internal format.
If REQUEST_TYPE is S'Pass_embedded_KANJI' (for PLUS) or SR$REQTYPE is 0
(for MASM), the READ procedures do not remove the embedded shift-code bytes.
The entire image is returned untranslated in the text buffer.
Multiple Block Sequence Indicator
If the input images are from a card reader file created by the Nippon-go Preprocessors
for ASCII COBOL (NCOB) and ASCII FORTRAN (NFTN), they may contain a logical record
that is divided into two or more physical records. The record is divided because these
processors run on EXEC level 38R5 or lower levels that do not allow more than 132
characters in a record. To read one logical record rather than two or more physical
records, the multiple block sequence indicator is set in the last shift code of a record.
The records must reside in a symbiont file, and the text buffer must be at least 264
characters long.
17.3.4. Attributed Character Data
If the input images are attributed character data (ACD), the READ procedures translate
the images into internal format. The text part is returned in the text buffer, and the
attributes are returned in the attribute table. Subsection 16.2 describes internal format.
The Data Structures Programming Reference Manual describes ACD format.
