In cases where there are complications with the outer or
middle ear, or when one ear does not function, hearing care
professionals agree that a Baha bone conduction system is
a more effective solution than conventional air conduction

We have five senses, all of which help us to experience the world around us.
We are born ready to receive information through these senses. The more
information the brain receives, the better we can understand and participate
in the surrounding world.
We experience hearing naturally in two ways: via air
conduction and bone conduction.
Air Conduction hearing devices amplify sound waves
and direct them from the outer ear through the middle ear
to the inner ear.
Bone Conduction devices send the sound vibrations directly
to the inner ear through your child’s skull bone.
Baha enables your child to hear sound through bone
conduction directly to the inner ear, bypassing any hearing
problems your child may have in their outer or middle ear.
With a Baha, your child may:

imitate simple words and point

members, trying to pronounce

How a Child’s
Hearing Develops
These communication milestones outline the behaviors that may be expected of a
child at various stages of development. Learning processes are, however, individual
and can vary several months from one child to another. Children with a hearing
loss need the best possible access to speech at all times; adequate audibility is vital
for efficient language development and speech acquisition. The Baha ® System can
deliver excellent audibility and sound clarity.
Children will use everyday
words heard at home and
pronounce simple two word
sentences. Most speech
becomes understandable to
other adults. At this age many
children learn their first songs
and enjoy listening to music.
3 Years
This is the age of use and
understanding of simple verbs,
prepositions, adjectives and
pronouns. Children should begin
using complete sentences and
also be able to accurately locate
the source of a sound.
If you have any concern about your child’s development, we suggest you
turn to your family doctor for advice or more information.
4–5 Years
The child’s speech is now
understandable but longer
or more complex words will
frequently be mispronounced.
Vocabulary increases rapidly
and most children of this age can
carry on a conversation. Most
speech sounds should be clear
and understandable by the end
of the preschool period.

Baha Softband — gently

For children who are not yet ready for an implant * , the Baha ® Softband is the ideal
alternative. Easy to use and comfortable, providing infants and toddlers with the
amplification they need to facilitate language development. *
• Consists of a soft, elastic headband and a plastic snap connector.
• Adjustable fastening ensures easy pressure adjustment.
• Easy to shift position to increase comfort. Useful when child is in a car seat or stroller.
• Holds the processor firmly but gently in place.

Baha® –
the Proven Solution
Baha is the world’s first implantable bone conduction hearing system. Clinically
proven for more than 30 years, it offers a natural pathway to hearing for children
who cannot sufficiently benefit from air conduction hearing aids, or who find
other bone conduction and CROS (Contralateral Routing Of Signals) hearing aids
uncomfortable or ineffective.
After a straightforward surgical procedure, the bone integrates with the titanium implant in a process known as osseointegration.
This same process has been used in dental implants as well as Baha with great success for more than 30 years. When used as an
integral part of a Baha System, the osseointegrated implant enables sound to be conducted directly to the cochlea.
There are three components to the Baha System:

Titanium Implant
The connecting abutment receives
the amplified vibrations and transfers
them to the osseointegrated
titanium implant.
Using bone conduction, the titanium
implant transfers sound vibrations
directly to the hearing nerve via
the cochlea.

One or two Baha?
If your child has a hearing loss in both ears, placing a Baha on both sides
should be considered. This will enhance the listening experience and help
your child locate where a sound is coming from — a crucial skill both in
social activites with friends and family and to assist personal safety in
noisy active environments such as traffic.

Now that you know what a Baha ® can do, how do you
get one for your child? The answer is — it's easy.
The entire process, from initial contact to aftercare advice and guidance is
devised to be as simple as possible.
Take a Test
Ask your hearing care professional for a
demonstration of a Baha, so your child
can hear the difference.
Recommendation
If your child is a good candidate for a
Baha implant, you will be put in touch
with a qualified surgeon. In cases where
a child is too young for surgery, a
Baha ® Softband can be used.*
Implant
Because Baha implant surgery is a
straightforward procedure, your child
can resume his or her normal routine
within just a few days. And unlike other
types of ear surgery, there is no damage
to their hearing.
Fitting
After the bone has had time to merge with
the implant, your hearing care professional
will fit the Baha Sound Processor and
adjust its settings to suit your child’s
individual hearing needs.
Aftercare
Aside from follow-up appointments and
routine checkups, the only aftercare
needed is to keep the abutment clean and
the sound processor dry.

Take your child to a hearing professional near

As your patient’s partner in hearing for life, Cochlear believes it is important to convey not
only the benefits, but also the potential risks associated with a Baha procedure.
Not everyone with hearing loss is a candidate for a Baha. Baha is contraindicated in
patients with inadequate bone quality or quantity to provide stability and support for the
implant, or in patients who will be unable to maintain and clean the skin around
the abutment. In the U.S., use of the implanted fixture is also contraindicated in children
under age 5 years.
All surgical procedures include an element of risk, and it is impossible to guarantee success.
The device may fail to osseointegrate for a number of reasons, including physiological
and surgical issues as well as traumatic impact to the implant site. On rare occasions the
skin around the abutment may become inflamed from a mild infection or the skin may
grow back towards its original thickness. For complete information regarding the risks and
