(ii) Slag<br />

The broad types of slag used in Base/sub-base construction are:-<br />

1. Blast Furnace Slag<br />

2. Granular Blast Furnace Slag<br />

3. Steel Slag<br />

Physical characteristics of Blast furnace slag and steel furnace slag are given in Table 410.2<br />

It may be noted that some varieties of Steel Slag are found lacking in stability in the presence of water.<br />

Such varieties need to be left <strong>for</strong> weathering in stockpiles <strong>for</strong> sufficiently long periods of time to render<br />

them suitable <strong>for</strong> road works. In general, the unit weight of slag should not be less than 11.2 kN/m 3 .<br />

2. Horizontal Alignment<br />

When used in subbase and base courses, the edges should be correct within tolerance limit of (±)<br />

30 mm in plain and rolling terrain and (±) 50 mm in hilly terrain.<br />

3. Surface Levels<br />

When used in sub-bases, the tolerance in surface levels will be (+)10 mm and (–) 20 mm. When<br />

used in base courses, the tolerance in surface levels will be restricted to (±) 10 mm. A grid of 10 m<br />

x 2.5 m may be <strong>for</strong>med to check the surface level.<br />

4. Surface Regularity<br />

When used in sub-base courses, the maximum permitted difference between the subbase layer<br />

and 3 m straight edge should be 12 mm <strong>for</strong> longitudinal profile and 10 mm <strong>for</strong> cross profile.<br />

However, when used in base courses, the permitted differences should be 12 mm <strong>for</strong> longitudinal<br />

profile and 8 mm <strong>for</strong> cross profile.<br />

5. <strong>Quality</strong> Control Tests<br />

(a) Flyash (Pond Ash)<br />

For use of flyash in embankment construction, the <strong>Quality</strong> Control tests given in Subsection<br />

306 shall apply.<br />

For use of flyash in Lime-flyash stabilized soil subbase, the <strong>Quality</strong> Control tests given<br />

in Sub-section 409 shall apply.<br />
