II. Road Markings<br />

1. The road markings should be in con<strong>for</strong>mity with the Code of Practice <strong>for</strong> Road Markings with<br />

paints IRC: 35.<br />

2. Paining may be done by machine or by hand, preferably by machine.<br />

3. The finished road markings should be free from ruggedness on sides and ends and these should<br />

be parallel to the general alignment of the carriageway. The upper surface of the lines should be<br />

free from streaks.<br />

B. <strong>Quality</strong> Control Requirements<br />

1. Traffic Signs<br />

The materials should con<strong>for</strong>m to the following requirements.<br />

(i) Concrete: Concrete <strong>for</strong> footing shall be of the grade shown on the Contract drawings or of<br />

minimum M15 grade con<strong>for</strong>ming to Section 801 of these Specifications.<br />

(ii) Rein<strong>for</strong>cing steel: Rein<strong>for</strong>cing steel shall con<strong>for</strong>m to the requirements of IS:1786 unless<br />

otherwise shown on the drawing.<br />

(iii) Bolts, nuts, washers: High strength bolts shall con<strong>for</strong>m to IS:1367<br />

(iv) M.S. Sheets, Plates and supports: Plates and support sections <strong>for</strong> the sign posts shall con<strong>for</strong>m<br />

to IS:2062 or any other relevant IS Specifications.<br />

(v) Reflectorised paint: Reflectorised paint shall con<strong>for</strong>m to IS:5 or the manufacturer’s<br />

specifications in case of proprietary product and as approved by the Engineer.<br />

(vi) Non reflectorised paint: Non-reflectorised paint shall con<strong>for</strong>m to IS:164 and as approved<br />

by the Engineer.<br />

(vii) Engineering grade sheeting: This sheeting shall be enclosed lens type consisting of<br />

microscopic lens elements embedded beneath the surface of a smooth, flexible, transparent,<br />

water-proof plastic, resulting in a non-exposed lens optical reflecting system. The retroreflective<br />

surface after cleaning with soap and water and in dry condition shall have the<br />

minimum coefficient of retro-reflection (determined in accordance with ASTM Standard) as<br />

indicated in Table 1700.1.<br />

When totally wet, the sheeting shall not show less than 90 per cent of the values, of retroreflection<br />

indicated in Table 1700.1. At the end of 5 years, the sheeting shall retain at least 50<br />

per cent of its original retro-reflectance.<br />
