1. Introduction<br />

3.3 Simple/Hand-Feel Tests<br />

For monitoring the quality of work, generally it may not be possible to carry out the detailed quality<br />

control tests and there<strong>for</strong>e, <strong>for</strong> the purpose of quality monitoring simple/handfeel tests can be per<strong>for</strong>med.<br />

Normally various simple tests have been used by the experienced practising engineers in the field to<br />

make a quick assessment of the quality of the product. However, these procedures have not been<br />

standardized and involve human judgement. There<strong>for</strong>e, these tests which provide useful guidance <strong>for</strong><br />

supervisory officers during inspections, should by no means be used as a replacement of the specified<br />

quality control tests. Some simple handfeel tests which are useful <strong>for</strong> quality monitoring are given in<br />

Appendix I.<br />

4. COVERAGE OF THE HANDBOOK<br />

The <strong>Handbook</strong> is divided into two volumes:<br />

<strong>Volume</strong> I: <strong>Quality</strong> Management System and <strong>Quality</strong> Control Requirements<br />

<strong>Volume</strong> II: Equipment and Test Procedures<br />

The <strong>Volume</strong> I covers quality management system and describes in detail quality control of works by<br />

Field Units and supervisory staff and quality monitoring by National/State <strong>Quality</strong> monitors <strong>for</strong> various<br />

activities of construction and maintenance of rural roads. The Sections in this <strong>Volume</strong> correspond to<br />

the Sections of the Specifications <strong>for</strong> <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Roads</strong> of the Ministry of <strong>Rural</strong> Development, Government of<br />

India.<br />

The <strong>Volume</strong> II covers laboratory set up, equipment and test procedures <strong>for</strong> various quality control tests.<br />

5. Flow Chart<br />

A typical flow chart <strong>for</strong> quality assurance checks during the construction of rural roads is given as an<br />

illustration in Figure 1.1.<br />
