ABB is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and
industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact.
ABB Technology
Technology from ABB affects your daily life in more ways than you might
imagine.
Technology plays a key role for ABB. We have seven research centers, 7,500
scientists and 70 university collaborations across the world – all working to
develop unique technologies that make our customers more competitive, while
minimizing environmental impact.
Power and productivity for a better world
Global lab power
The Global Lab Power helps ABB remain the world leader in power transmission,
power distribution and power conversion for utilities and industries.

With operations in Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, Poland and China, the
lab brings together high level and wide-ranging expertise in all relevant areas
under the following technology programs:
Materials and transformation
Switching technologies
Active grid infrastructure
Grid automation
Power electronics
The lab competency is complemented by strategic relationships with leading
universities and research organizations all around the world.
Interdisciplinary research teams, involving our operational business, external
partners and customers, work on the challenge to create new and improved
technologies embodied in products and systems that increase the reliability, the
efficiency and the cost-effectiveness of a power system - from generation to load -
beyond what is possible today.
Materials and transformation
The materials and transformation program covers the technology areas of
insulation systems — solid as well as liquid — and transformers.
The mission of the program is to provide a strong competence base in the
technology areas and furnish our business partners with competitive solutions
based on a thorough understanding of both the basic science and the applications.
The research topics in the materials area address all solid and liquid insulating
systems, which form the backbone of many ABB products. Improving the outdoor
capability, the mechanical strength and the lifetime of insulation materials will
play a key role for the market success of ABB's power products.
In the transformer technology research area we cover both the transformer itself
and the associated components such as bushings and tap changers.

Power electronics
The power electronics program enables the development of innovative, costefficient
power electronics solutions, power semiconductor technologies and
electrical machine designs.
These create a base for new competitive products for industrial automation and
power technologies applications.
Specifically, the program focuses on:
New converter concepts and control technologies to give increased
functionality and performance in power transmission, distributed generation
and motor drives
Integration and packaging technologies to reduce power electronics products
size and decrease manufacturing costs
New concepts & technologies for electrical motors & machines
Innovative solutions for the total process of motion control in specific
applications
Switching technologies
The switching technologies program focuses on switchgears, circuit
breakers, residual current devices, disconnectors, switches, contactors and
tap changers at all the different voltages and current levels.
In addition, research on surge arrester technology is also part of the program.
The mission of the program is to secure ABB business with the most
updated and efficient technologies, both by pushing the existing ones to their
limits and by preparing the future generation of products and applications.
Main research topics include arc physics in different switching media,
current interruption and limiting, dielectric recovery, advanced
electromechanics and actuators, thermal management, electrical contacts,
numerical simulation and modeling, and application of semiconductors for
switching.
Projects within the program are executed by the leading research centers of
ABB in strict collaboration with the technology centers of the business units,
and with several universities and research institutions worldwide.

What did we do...
We have visited all departments of the industry and viewed the functioning of
various machines as discussed below.

Dead Tank Power Circuit Breakers
ABB designs and manufactures dead tank circuit breakers in a complete range of
configurations to provide solutions for today's power requirements. All products
are factory tested to meet or exceed industry standards and up to 800 kV.
Transmission and Sub-transmission Protection and Control
Relion 670/650 series IEDs belong to the Relion protection and control product
family. This family offers the widest range of products for the protection,
control, measurement and supervision of power systems. With ABB’s leading-
edge technology, global application knowledge and experienced support
network, you can be completely confident that your system performs reliably –
in any situation.

ABB offers a comprehensive range of reliable and high efficiency motors and
generators for all applications. ABB has what it takes to help every industry and
application reach new levels of efficiency and energy savings even under the most
demanding conditions. Combining the best available materials with superior
technology, the electric motors and generators are designed to operate reliably no
matter how challenging the process or application, and to have low life cycle costs.

Our Experience from the Industrial Visit
Practical working of various instrument enhance our learning.
After completing the industrial visit, we have upgraded our knowledge.
the other new ideas and new thinking which was very necessary for
development.
We have visited the entire process department. They are using new
technologies.
We have learned how power plants are using in generating electricity ,and
enhancing our industrial development.
They are strictly following quality & safety aspects. It is desirable to review
various
We have seen how export of these machinery increasing the economic
conditions of our country.
During industrial. visit, we feel very much satisfied by acquiring information
of various dept. & knowing many new things.
We collected all the information regarding power and productivity.
The industrial visit helps how to translate theory into practical.

Conclusion
We conclude that while going through the entire industrial visit, the cooperation
is found to be very well organized, developed & most ideal industry in every
walk of its production, administration & management aspects.
We extend our heartiest thanks to ABB for making 8 th November 2012 a day to
cherish for some of the lucky students who are honored with your humble
gesture to get an opportunity to visit such an esteemed organization.
We also want to thank our director Dr. P.G.K Murthy and all the teachers,
especially to Prof. Anjulika Singh& Prof.Niyati Patel for coordinating the visit.
