<strong>Report</strong> on Industrial visit to Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd. Vadodara, on October

Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd is the single largest producer of Caustic Soda in
India. The company is a multi-product company manufacturing 26 products. The
company manufactures sodium cyanide, sodium ferrocyanide, chloromethane,
hydrochloric acid, caustic potash, potassium carbonate, phosphoric acid (85%) and
hydrogen peroxide. The company has two units located at Vadodara (Baroda) and
Dahej, both in the State of Gujarat. The company is associated with various industries
viz. Textiles, Pulp & Paper, Soaps & Detergents, Alumina, Water Treatment, Petroleum,
Fertilizers Pharmaceuticals, Agrochemicals, Dyes & Dyes Intermediates, etc through
their products. Also, they made their felt across the globe even against stiff competition

y exporting products to USA, Europe, Australia, Africa, Far & Middle East Countries,
China and South Asian Markets. Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd was incorporated
in the year 1973 in Gujarat and was promoted by Gujarat Industrial Investment
Corporation Ltd, a wholly owned company of Govt. of Gujarat, as a core promoter.
GACL is the single largest producer of Caustic Soda in India, with a production capacity
of 1087 TPD. GACL is accredited with IS/ISO 9001:2000, IS/ISO 14001:2004 and IS
18001:2000 Certifications. Company’s QHSE policy reflects their emphasis and
commitments.
GACL has two units located at Vadodara and Dahej , both in the State of Gujarat. It has
integrated manufacturing facilities for Caustic Soda, Chlorine, Hydrogen Gas,
Hydrochloric Acid, Chloromethanes, Hydrogen Peroxide, Phosphoric Acid, Potassium
Hydroxide, Potassium Carbonate, Sodium Cyanide, and Sodium Ferrocyanide. The
Dahej unit also has 90 MW Captive Power Plant (CPP) for regular and economical
power supply.
A group of sixty students led by Prof. Shantanu Chakravarty and Prof. Krishna Gor
reached the company premises around 2:30 pm and was very well received by Mr.
Manoj Shah from the HR Department. The first thing noticed by the students was a
pollution free company in spite of dealing with chemicals. The students and faculty were
given the entry pass first and there was a strict security check. The students were then
taken into an auditorium and were addressed by Mr. Rajkumar (from HR). They were
shown a movie that showed the effective measures taken by GACL towards
environment. It gave them a full picture and a clear idea about its products, major
plants, supporting countries and technology that it follows for healthy nature.
Then we were divided into two groups, these groups were taken for the plant visit
accompanied by the person from production department. The plant visit was possible
only for those who had safety shoes and helmet. The safety measures were strict. The
students were explained the entire production process. Starting from the huge salt
heaps, salt washery, saturator, filtrators, control room till the electrolysis process the
students went through all machineries. The supervisor gave them a detail and step wise

process of its main product. The most different thing that could be seen was the pipes
were colored according to chemicals passing through them like purple was for caustic
soda, yellow was for chlorine and orange for hydrogen. This is what excited the
students the most.
Followed by the plant visit, was the canteen visit which served us snacks and tea. After
that back in the auditorium, the students were shown a movie on safety measures
adopted by GACL in the surroundings and what should we do in case of emergencies.
The students had a very interactive session with Mr. Rajkumar sir. He gave them the
insights into the policy of GACL, basically the HR policies. The visit was concluded by
the questions-answer session.
To sum up, it was a very good learning experience for the students of Section H. it was
the first industrial visit of the class and they got a glimpse of how the industry works in
real.
