Procedures for reporting passenger misconduct: 1. The bus driver will report misconduct occurring on the school bus to the transportation director. 2. A School Bus Conduct Report will be completed and submitted to the appropriate school principal for action by the bus driver. 3. The bus driver will receive a copy of the school bus disciplinary report before taking any action against the student involved. 4. All disciplinary actions start the following morning unless instructed by the transportation director. Cafeteria Cafeteria Rules: 1. Students are to sit quietly and eat. 2. Speak in a low voice. 3. Do not throw food or paper. 4. Line up quietly to empty tray when told to do so. 5. Students will obey the adults on duty. 6. Students will line up quietly in traveling position until their class is dismissed. Consequences: 1. Student will receive one warning. 2. Student will be moved to a “No Talk” table. 3. Student may be referred to the principal. (Teacher will inform parent.) Checking in / Checking out Students who arrive at school after 7:55 a.m. must be escorted to the office and must check in at the office. Students who are leaving school must be checked out through the office by a parent, guardian, or person designated by a parent or guardian. Communication Communication – Teachers will make regular contact with parents concerning student grades, conduct, and/or excessive absences/tardies. Parents may be notified by phone, note or email. Parents or teachers may also request a conference when a need arises. Parents wishing to set up a conference MUST call the school office to make an appointment. Please inform us of new or updated phone numbers and addresses. Corporal Punishment Corporal punishment may be administered in accordance with the Blytheville School District policy. This policy requires that corporal punishment be administered as a last resort when all other means of discipline have not been effective. Corporal punishment will be administered by certified staff only, in private, witnessed by at least one other certified staff member. It shall not be excessive or administered with malice. Parents will be notified prior to the initial administration of corporal punishment and will be notified in writing every time thereafter. Prior to the administration of corporal punishment, the student receiving the corporal punishment shall be given an explanation of the reasons for the punishment and be given an opportunity to refute the charges. A parent or guardian may request in writing that corporal punishment not be administered. Alternative punishment shall be determined by principal which may include suspension. All corporal punishment shall be administered privately, i.e. out of the sight and hearing of other students, and shall be administered in the presence of another certified staff member as a witness, shall not be excessive, or administered with malice. (Board Policy #4.39 Revised 02/23/04) Drills Fire, Tornado, Earthquake and Lockdown drills are held on a regular basis. Students are trained as to what to do in the event of a disaster and evacuation routes are posted in the hallways and classrooms. When the city tornado warning signal sounds the outside doors to the building will be locked. Parents may come inside and wait, but no students will be allowed to leave the building until the all-clear signal is given. 3. Always WALK in the building and on the sidewalks. 4. Use respectful language. 5. Go directly to assigned areas. Student Medications Students will be given prescription medications only after a medication administration form has been completed by a parent accompanied by health care plan and completed by a physician. The medication must be in its original container, clearly labeled with the student’s name, doctor’s name, the name of the medication, dosage information, frequency, and instructions for the administration of the medication. Nonprescription medications will be given only if sent in the original package and accompanied by a parent giving specific instructions. Medications intended for self-medication such as epi-pens and inhalers shall be kept by a teacher, in the school office, or nurse’s office in a safe, convenient place, where they can be easily accessed when needed. These medications must also be accompanied by a note and be in the original container that is clearly labeled. Parental Involvement Plan The Blytheville School District understands the importance of involving parents and the community as a whole in promoting higher student achievement and general good will between the district, its schools and those it serves. Therefore, the Blytheville School District shall strive to develop and maintain the capacity for meaningful and productive parental and community involvement that will result in partnerships that are mutually beneficial to the school, students, parents, and the community. A certified staff member is appointed at each school in the district to serve as a parent facilitator within that school. The parent facilitators serve on the district committee to annually review the district’s parental involvement plan and actively engage parents and community leaders when appropriate. Parents will be informed of what the children are learning, how they are assessed, what the expectations are, and how as a parent they can help. Each school in the Blytheville School District will implement a parental involvement plan including programs to enhance parental involvement and reflect the specific needs of students and their families. The Blytheville School District will give the schools in the district the support necessary to enable them to plan and implement effective parental involvement activities. Certified staff members in the Blytheville School District will receive no fewer than two hours of professional development opportunities that are designed to enhance understanding of effective parental involvement strategies. Administrators will received no fewer than three hours of professional development that are designed to enhance the understanding of effective parental involvement strategies and the importance of administrative leadership in setting expectations and creating a climate conducive to parental participation. The Blytheville School District’s Parental Involvement Plan includes but is not limited to the following activities: Communication with Parents: Teachers district-wide will maintain regular, two-way communication with parents of students. All elementary teachers will meet with parents or guardians of each student at least once a semester through parent/teacher conference, telephone conference, or a home visit. Secondary teachers shall attempt to communicate personally with parents or guardians at least twice during, the school year, through parent/teacher conferences or other means, to discuss academic progress. Teachers will communicate more frequently if additional support is needed. Parents will be provided with informational packets containing a variety of resources according to grade level. These kits will include the following items: • The school’s parental involvement program • School Compact with the recommended role of parent, student, teacher and school; • Ways for the parent to become involved in the school and his or her child’s education; • A survey for the parent regarding volunteering at the school • Activities planned throughout the school year; • A system to allow the parents and teachers to communicate in a regular, two-way meaningful manner with the child’s teacher and principal. • School calendar • Interim assessment schedules • School handbook • Supply list • Learning expectations • Tips for parents These packets will be given to parents at registration, evening open houses, or during conference times. Parents have access to the district’s website, www.blythevilleschools.com. It provides parents with the following information and access to: • Home Access Center to access their child’s grades. • Helpful websites for parents and children. • Information about the district parent center and materials available. • Parental involvement coordinators for each school in the district. • Scrolling calendar of district events. • Contact information for each school in the district. The district-wide calendar will be made available to parents/guardians and provides information concerning the various schools and school activities. The school district will make use of social networking programs, Facebook, and Twitter to connect with parents and community stakeholders and to share up to-the minute information on events, activities and learning taking place in the school district. Parents will be informed about parental involvement programs, meeting and other activities they can be involved in. Such communication shall be, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand and will be presented through: • Backpack notes • Newspaper articles 33
