and landscapes) of the late Ming painter Chen<br />

Hongshou, Ren Xiong employed a wide variety of painting<br />

styles. His "Self portrait", now in the Palace Museum<br />

in Beijing, is an unclassifiable work imbued with an extraordinary<br />

modernity, still very striking today. He illustrated<br />

the works of the poet Yao Xie, and produced albums of<br />

engravings, such as the "Histoires des chevaliers redresseurs<br />

de tort" ("Stories of knight errants"), and portraits of<br />

scholars and immortals. Also attributed to him are<br />

several bird-and-flower paintings, and landscapes like<br />

the long roll of "La chaumière du lac Fan” ("The Thatched<br />

Pavilion of Fan Lake"). According to the exhibition's<br />

curator, Eric Lefèvre, "its palette makes it a turning point<br />
