Local <strong>Government</strong> <strong>Chapter</strong> Six<br />

TOWNSHIPS IN MINNESOTA<br />

Law provides: Townships are governed by a board of supervisors elected by the people for three<br />

year terms, and administrative officers elected/appointed for two year terms. The annual town meeting<br />

is held in each town on the second Tuesday of March. Optional forms of organization may be<br />

selected by the voters. (<strong>Minnesota</strong> Statutes, <strong>Chapter</strong>s 365, 368)<br />

Functions: Townships have authority for planning, subdivision control, zoning, maintenance of public<br />

works, parks, cemeteries, and hospitals in addition to regular duties such as elections,<br />

tax levies and public roads.<br />

SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN MINNESOTA<br />

Law provides: The public school districts of <strong>Minnesota</strong> provide for the education of about 847,000<br />

students from kindergarten through grade 12.*<br />

School facilities are supplied by the 339 independent school districts, three intermediate districts,<br />

five integration districts, 19 education districts, four tribal schools, 21 cooperative districts, 12<br />

telecommunications districts, and 94 charter schools. In addition, many students have the opportunity<br />

to enroll in schools outside their own district through various attendance options programs. School<br />

districts are governed by an elected school board. <strong>Minnesota</strong> law provides that public education shall<br />

be free and no pupil can be denied an education because of economic hardship and the inability to<br />

provide the books and supplies necessary to complete the requirements for graduation. (<strong>Minnesota</strong><br />
