The <strong>Conservation</strong> Reserve<br />

Enhancement Program (CREP II) has been<br />

a huge success. Of the 39 counties that<br />

participated in CREP II, Winona County had<br />

the third highest number of acres enrolled.<br />

This replaced cropland on highly erodible<br />

land with native grasses and forbes on over<br />

600 acres. The program also protected seven<br />

sinkholes which could lead to groundwater<br />

contamination if left alone. In one contract,<br />

over 100 acres were protected in the upland<br />

of Knopp Valley, which is a developed valley<br />

near Winona. These long-term conservation<br />

easements will improve water quality for<br />

generations to come.<br />

A good working relationship with<br />

the Winona County Planning Offi ce has led to<br />

good conservation outcomes. The SWCD was<br />

helpful in choosing a fi rm to help with rewriting<br />

the zoning rules for the county. Also, one<br />

SWCD Supervisor is on the County Planning<br />

Commission which decides conditional use<br />

permits in the county. SWCD staff assist County<br />

staff with stormwater issues by reviewing any<br />

soil or technical related stormwater plans.<br />
