The Conservation Reserve
Enhancement Program (CREP II) has been
a huge success. Of the 39 counties that
participated in CREP II, Winona County had
the third highest number of acres enrolled.
This replaced cropland on highly erodible
land with native grasses and forbes on over
600 acres. The program also protected seven
sinkholes which could lead to groundwater
contamination if left alone. In one contract,
over 100 acres were protected in the upland
of Knopp Valley, which is a developed valley
near Winona. These long-term conservation
easements will improve water quality for
generations to come.
A good working relationship with
the Winona County Planning Offi ce has led to
good conservation outcomes. The SWCD was
helpful in choosing a fi rm to help with rewriting
the zoning rules for the county. Also, one
SWCD Supervisor is on the County Planning
Commission which decides conditional use
permits in the county. SWCD staff assist County
staff with stormwater issues by reviewing any
soil or technical related stormwater plans.
