➡➡ IN THE SUMMER OF 2008, 10
SIAST instructors completed the Faculty
Certificate Program (FCP). Six of the 10
accelerated through the FCP, completing
the program in two years, instead of
three. A graduation luncheon was held
on August 15 at the Hotel Saskatchewan
with representation from the University
of Regina, SIDRU and SIAST.
The Advanced Summer Institute ran
from July 28 to August 15 with two
weeks at SIAST Wascana and one week
at SIAST Kelsey. In the institute, participants
expressed positive views about
their experiences in the program. All participants
Their personal and professional growth
as educators and leaders was displayed
in the Advanced Summer Institute.
The graduates are SIAST FCP ambassadors.
As mentors and role models,
these individuals will enrich the instructional
and academic leadership of SIAST
by advancing the values, norms and
practices of a quality teaching and learning
culture.
The certificate program includes two
Congratulations grads!
--
➡➡ FCP graduate, Cal Horudko has this to say about the program: “I
entered the FCP program after my ninth year as an instructor with SIAST.
Although I found the FCP to be challenging at times, I also found it to be
very rewarding. The FCP has increased my awareness of the needs of my
students and has encouraged me to be conscious of my own teaching
philosophies. The FCP has also connected me to other instructors
throughout SIAST with whom I have become friends. I have been able to
share ideas, experiences, as well as the similarities and difference of our
chosen disciplines with these different instructors, and this awareness has
made me more open to other styles of teaching. SIAST’s commitment to
increase the quality of its instructors is mirrored within the FCP, and I feel
blessed to have participated in this endeavour.”
- Cal Horudko is an instructor at SIAST Kelsey Campus for the Automotive Service Technician program
➡➡ Janet Galbraith, another recent graduate, shares these words about
her experience: “The Faculty Certificate Program allowed me to expand my
toolbox of instructional strategies and to reflect on my current practices.
The knowledge I gained transformed my perspective on adult education
and learning, it was a very valuable experience.”
- Janet Galbraith is a Basic Education instructor at SIAST Wascana Campus
Great Teachers Seminar
➡➡ THE SPECIFIC PURPOSES of the
Great Teachers Seminars have remained
basically unchanged since the original
Illinois Great Teachers Seminar (GTS) in
1969, founded by David B. Gotshall.
1. To celebrate good teaching.
2. To cause educators to venture beyond
the limits of their own specializations and
environments in search of transferable
ideas and the universals of teaching.
3. To promote an attitude of introspection
and self-appraisal by providing
a relaxed setting and straightforward
process whereby participants can seriously
review and contemplate their attitude,
methods and behavior as teachers.
4. To practice rational analysis of instructional
problems and to develop realistic,
creative approaches to their solution.
5. To stimulate the exchange of information
and ideas by building an expanding
network of communication
among teachers in higher education.
The GTS is based on four premises.
1. In the long run, teachers learn to
teach best from one another. Properly facilitated
shop talk can be the highest
form of staff development.
2. Creativity in teaching is enhanced
by mixing teachers of diverse fields, experience
levels and interests.
3. If properly tapped, the collective
wisdom, experience and creativity of any
group of practicing educators far surpasses
that of any individual expert of
any stature or fame.
4. The key to success in teaching is
simplification (less is more).
The focus of the seminar is not on the
teaching of specific fields, but rather on
the art of teaching as such. The emphasis
is on the nature of a great teacher. It
is a quest for The Great Teacher and as in
the case of any quest, the questers learn
much about themselves.
GTS is held the beginning of May at the
Elkhorn Resort Spa and Conference Centre
adjacent to Riding Mountain National
Park located one hour north of Brandon,
Manitoba. It is a three-day, intensive seminar
that provides an opportunity to learn
about and reflect on the challenges faced
by educators in post-secondary institutions.
The format, which is purposely unstructured,
evolves from an ongoing assessment
of participants’ needs.
FCP Recognizes Prior Learning:
SIAST faculty enrolled in the Faculty
Certificate Program have a number of
options when it comes to completing
the program. In addition to taking the
courses on-line through our WebCT/Blackboard
delivery, faculty can
take advantage of recognition of prior
learning for previous related course
work and/or educational experiences.
Each of the four online FCP courses
can be assessed for prior learning, either
through PLAR or transfer credit.
Any planned courses can be chosen to
match the FCP offerings. In all of
these cases, faculty should contact
Garry Ayotte at 659-4110 or their local
ILDC facilitator. They will be
happy to discuss these options.
The next New Instructor Orientation
workshops will be held in August at
SIAST Wascana and SIAST Kelsey
campus locations. Program heads
with a new faculty member should
contact the Instructional and Leadership
Development Centre office to discuss
eligibility. For more information
on the August sessions, please contact
Sharon Eckmire, ILDC administrative
assistant at (306) 659-3865.
