Déborah Soleyman
An all-consuming passion
Brilliant law studies and the first steps of her
career taken in the watch making industry.
Then, in 2011, a radical change! Déborah
Soleyman pursued her real passion: cooking.
Cig’Art : How would you explain such a
change of direction?
Déborah Soleyman: When I was a child and I
was asked “What do you want to do when you
grow up?”, I would answer: “Rösti”. Today I give
the same answer but with a small smile because
I really do it... and much more. After four years
at university and my degree in hand, I realized
that I didn’t want to become a lawyer. A sudden
impulse? I went to Belgium to study gemology...
New degree. A new disillusionment.
C’A : Giving up a position of responsibility is not
easy.
D.S.: Boredom ad vitam aetertnam neither.
Professional fulfillment is essential to a happy
life. So without hesitation I left the prestigious
world of watch making for the marvelous one
of cooking. To start with I spent an unforgettable
summer in the kitchens of grand hotels.
Then, maybe because of my interest in gemology,
and even more for gastronomy, I started
working as a personal chef for Abdallah Chatila,
a famous businessman in Geneva. In this way,
I have been able to do what I love for nine
months whilst learning more about a profession
that is full of surprises and gives free rein
to my imagination and desires. Admittedly,
heredity must play its part. Which is why, I
should thank all the women in my family who
transmitted their love of cooking to me and, I
hope, a bit of their know how.
