2.3.1 Basic Approaches to <strong>the</strong> Study <strong>of</strong> Tourism<br />

Given its diversity, <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> is commonly approached through a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>es and methods (Mclntosh et ai, 1995; Cooper et ai, 1998). Individual<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>es, for example, view <strong>the</strong> activity <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> as an application <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

ideas and concepts. For example, a geographical, economic or <strong>in</strong>stitutional<br />

approach could be adopted. An alternative is to take a multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary or<br />

<strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary approach which attempts to <strong>in</strong>tegrate a variety <strong>of</strong> subjects and<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> (Figure 2.1) (Mclntosh et ai, 1995; Cooper et ai,<br />

1998).<br />

In attempt<strong>in</strong>g to develop a conceptual framework that <strong>in</strong>corporates <strong>the</strong> many aspects<br />

and approaches to <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Basic Tourism System model developed<br />

by Leiper (1990) can be utilised (Figure 2.2).<br />
