7.3.6.1 The Sankuyo Tshwaragano Management Trust (STMT)<br />

The village <strong>of</strong> Sankuyo was <strong>the</strong> first village <strong>in</strong> Ngamiland District to establish<br />

community-based <strong>tourism</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1996. The village <strong>of</strong> Sankuyo is located on <strong>the</strong><br />

nor<strong>the</strong>astern fr<strong>in</strong>ges on <strong>the</strong> Okavango Delta (see Figure 5.4 <strong>in</strong> chapter five). In 1996,<br />

Sankuyo established <strong>the</strong> Sankuyo Tshwaragano Management Trust (STMT) to co­<br />

ord<strong>in</strong>ate community-based <strong>tourism</strong> activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> village. The village and its trust<br />

were allocated <strong>the</strong> Controlled-Hunt<strong>in</strong>g Areas <strong>of</strong> NG 33 and NG 44 to be used for<br />

photographic and hunt<strong>in</strong>g purposes, respectively. STMT <strong>the</strong>n sub-leased <strong>the</strong>se two<br />

community areas to Game Safaris and Crocodile Camp Safaris. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> trust<br />
