Give communities <strong>in</strong>centives to engage <strong>in</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>ed development and<br />

conservation activities;<br />

Establish clear l<strong>in</strong>ks between <strong>the</strong> reception <strong>of</strong> benefits and <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s;<br />

Ensure that a fair share <strong>of</strong> benefits is realised at <strong>the</strong> local level and benefits<br />

acquired from <strong>resource</strong>s from a locality are distributed as widely as feasible<br />

with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> locality;<br />

Recognise <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> all species as contributors to a <strong>natural</strong>ly function<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ecological unit;<br />

Encourage <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>of</strong> community benefits ga<strong>in</strong>ed from <strong>natural</strong><br />

<strong>resource</strong>s <strong>in</strong>to activities that will not adversely affect those <strong>resource</strong>s or<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rwise h<strong>in</strong>der <strong>the</strong> viability <strong>of</strong> ecological systems;<br />

Enhance community autonomy through programmes directed towards<br />

community self-reliance, with democratic and transparent participatory<br />

mechanisms; and<br />

Ensure respect for <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> all members <strong>of</strong> society (Republic <strong>of</strong><br />

Botswana CBNRM Policy, 2000).<br />

The overall objective <strong>of</strong> Botswana's CBNRM Policy is to validate CBNRM as a<br />

foundation for conservation based development. The specific CBNRM policy<br />

objectives are to:<br />

• Enhance <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> Botswana's <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s;<br />

• Enhance economic and social development <strong>in</strong> rural areas by provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

qualified communities opportunities to earn benefits from <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong><br />

conservation;<br />
