4. Establish <strong>the</strong> extent <strong>of</strong> <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong> use by <strong>the</strong> tourist<br />

hotels/lodges/safari camps <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Okavango Delta. This will provide<br />

<strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong>to exist<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>kages between <strong>tourism</strong> development and <strong>the</strong><br />

impact on an area's <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong> base.<br />

5. Identify tourist demand for <strong>the</strong> utilisation <strong>of</strong> <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Okavango Delta. This will provide <strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> ensu<strong>in</strong>g pressures<br />

placed on social, environmental and economic structures <strong>in</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that demand.<br />

6. Identify viable alternatives for creat<strong>in</strong>g and streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g positive l<strong>in</strong>kages<br />

between <strong>tourism</strong> and <strong>the</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able <strong>management</strong> and utilisation <strong>of</strong> <strong>natural</strong><br />

<strong>resource</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Okavango Delta.<br />

The <strong>tourism</strong> aspect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study will concentrate on <strong>the</strong> entire Okavango Delta region<br />

<strong>of</strong> Botswana, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> tourist dest<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>of</strong> Maun, <strong>the</strong> Panhandle area<br />

and Moremi Game Reserve. The <strong>resource</strong> <strong>management</strong> aspect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study will<br />

focus on past and present forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>resource</strong> utilization practiced by <strong>the</strong> local<br />

<strong>in</strong>habitants scattered throughout <strong>the</strong> Delta area, <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> government<br />

policy regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>resource</strong> use, past and present relationships between <strong>tourism</strong> and<br />

<strong>resource</strong> utilisation, and <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> on <strong>the</strong> area's <strong>resource</strong>s and local<br />

communities. The study will concentrate on <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s which<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude wildlife, prist<strong>in</strong>e thirst land and wetland environments, and water courses, on<br />

which <strong>the</strong> entire Okavango Delta <strong>tourism</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry is based.<br />

This study will attempt to def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> factors that <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>tourism</strong>'s <strong>role</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>management</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Okavango Delta's <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s <strong>of</strong> wildlife, vegetation and<br />

water. This will provide a framework to determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> impacts <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> on <strong>the</strong><br />

Okavango Delta's <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s. This will <strong>in</strong>clude an exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> changes <strong>in</strong><br />

land use, <strong>resource</strong> use, rural <strong>in</strong>come, trade, consumption patterns, demographics,<br />

production patterns and <strong>in</strong>frastructure developments. This project will also identify<br />

viable alternatives for creat<strong>in</strong>g and streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g positive l<strong>in</strong>kages between <strong>tourism</strong><br />

and <strong>the</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able <strong>management</strong> and utilisation <strong>of</strong> <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Okavango Delta.<br />
