5.4.2.16 The Okavango Delta and <strong>the</strong> Fences<br />

Even though large numbers <strong>of</strong> wildlife died along <strong>the</strong> fences while seek<strong>in</strong>g water<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g droughts, <strong>in</strong> a notable 'turn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tables', dur<strong>in</strong>g similar drought periods <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Okavango region <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early 1980s <strong>the</strong> fences <strong>in</strong> fact ensured that cattle could<br />

not ga<strong>in</strong> access to <strong>the</strong> Delta's <strong>resource</strong>s, preserv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong> wildlife that lived <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> region. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se severe droughts <strong>the</strong>re were constant demands that <strong>the</strong><br />

Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Buffalo Fence be dropped to allow ranches access to <strong>the</strong> Delta's graz<strong>in</strong>g<br />
