• Problems with solid waste disposal: Although most campsites with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Moremi Game Reserve are generally clean, <strong>the</strong>re is sometimes a problem<br />

with tourists leav<strong>in</strong>g litter ly<strong>in</strong>g around. A bigger problem, however, is with<br />

baboons and monkeys empty<strong>in</strong>g rubbish b<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> campsites. The DWNP<br />

provides baboon-pro<strong>of</strong> b<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> all campsites. However, many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se b<strong>in</strong>s<br />

get broken and <strong>the</strong> DWNP does not replace <strong>the</strong>m, mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>effective<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st baboons, monkeys and o<strong>the</strong>r scaveng<strong>in</strong>g wildlife. Many b<strong>in</strong>s are<br />

also not emptied by <strong>the</strong> DWNP regularly and hence overflow, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

rubbish ly<strong>in</strong>g around <strong>the</strong> campsites, which encourages <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong><br />

scavengers. Ablution blocks <strong>in</strong> many public campsites are also noted for<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g dirty, with little attention or action be<strong>in</strong>g taken by <strong>the</strong> DWNP to<br />

address this problem (Mbaiwa, 1999; Mbaiwa, 2002).<br />

• Problems with <strong>the</strong> book<strong>in</strong>g system for public campsites: The book<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> any<br />

public campsite under <strong>the</strong> authority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> DWNP has to be done through its<br />

Parks and Reservation Office. Book<strong>in</strong>gs are ei<strong>the</strong>r done <strong>in</strong> Gaborone or<br />

Maun, and this system is generally regarded as be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>effective. Attempts<br />

to make book<strong>in</strong>gs can be difficult as tourists are <strong>of</strong>ten told that campsites<br />

are fully booked, only to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m empty once <strong>the</strong>y visit <strong>the</strong> area. The mode<br />

<strong>of</strong> payment is also difficult as visa or credit cards are used to pay a deposit,<br />

but it is not possible to use such cards once <strong>in</strong> Maun or <strong>the</strong> Moremi Game<br />

Reserve (Mbaiwa, 1999; Mbaiwa, 2002).<br />

• Poor monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> tourist activities: There is a general failure by <strong>the</strong> DWNP<br />

to monitor <strong>the</strong> activities <strong>of</strong> tourists once <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Moremi Game<br />

Reserve. Concern has been raised about self-drive and mobile tourists who,<br />

due to this lack <strong>of</strong> monitor<strong>in</strong>g, are able to drive <strong>of</strong>f road, or fail to deposit<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir litter <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> right places. In addition, DWNP is also criticized for fail<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to provide tourists with <strong>the</strong> necessary <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> brochures<br />

and guidel<strong>in</strong>es on tourist activities, which is partly noted for caus<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>f road<br />

driv<strong>in</strong>g and poor waste <strong>management</strong> <strong>in</strong> public campsites (Mbaiwa, 1999;<br />

Mbaiwa, 2002).<br />
