Okavango Delta region, 44000 people are rural dwellers, while ano<strong>the</strong>r 44000 (50<br />

percent) live <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> more urban centres. These <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> towns <strong>of</strong> Maun, Gumare,<br />

Etsha 6, Mohembo, Nxamasere, Sepopa, Nokaneng, Seronga and Shakawe (Figure<br />

5.4) (Republic <strong>of</strong> Botswana Population <strong>of</strong> Towns, Villages and Associated Localities,<br />

2001; Republic <strong>of</strong> Botswana Statistical Bullet<strong>in</strong>, 2004).<br />

5.3.5.2 Employment<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Botswana Demography Survey (1998), <strong>the</strong> major source <strong>of</strong><br />

employment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ngamiland district is adm<strong>in</strong>istrative work (31 percent), followed by<br />

agriculture (17 percent) and wholesale and retail trade (8 percent). Employment <strong>in</strong><br />

hotels and restaurants makes up a fur<strong>the</strong>r six percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> economically active<br />

population. An estimated 46 000 people are economically active <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ngamiland<br />

district, with some 33 000 people employed <strong>in</strong> formal sector work. An estimated 12<br />

247 people are unemployed <strong>in</strong> this district with <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m consist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

males and females <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> age group <strong>of</strong> 19 to 29 years (Republic <strong>of</strong> Botswana<br />

Demography Survey, 1998). Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Botswana Statistical Bullet<strong>in</strong> (2001),<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are only an estimated 6 000 paid employees <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> agricultural sector<br />

throughout Botswana, even though up to 44 percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> economically active<br />

population <strong>in</strong> Botswana are engaged <strong>in</strong> agriculture.<br />

5.3.5.3 Income<br />

The average monthly cash earn<strong>in</strong>gs for work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> agricultural sector <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Ngamiland district for Botswana citizens is 405 Pula. Employment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hotel and<br />

restaurant sector pays an average monthly wage <strong>of</strong> 766 Pula (2001 estimates). Both<br />

<strong>the</strong>se figures are higher than <strong>the</strong> national m<strong>in</strong>imum monthly wage <strong>of</strong> 270 Pula<br />

(Republic <strong>of</strong> Botswana Statistical Bullet<strong>in</strong>, 2001). The average monthly household<br />

<strong>in</strong>come for <strong>the</strong> Ngamiland district are 731 Pula for urban towns, such as Maun and<br />

Shakawe, and 441 Pula for rural areas and villages (Africa Contemporary Record,<br />

2000).<br />

The most common sources <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>come <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ngamiland region <strong>in</strong>clude livestock and<br />

crop sales, <strong>the</strong> sale <strong>of</strong> veld products, <strong>the</strong> collection <strong>of</strong> drought relief from <strong>the</strong><br />

government, fish<strong>in</strong>g, work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> sector, <strong>the</strong> sell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> goOds as a street<br />
