As Table 5.2 shows, Botswana has at least 111 011.75 square kilometres <strong>of</strong><br />

protected area, which is 19,1 percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total land area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country. In<br />

addition, a fur<strong>the</strong>r 23 percent is reserved for conservation use as Wildlife<br />

Management Areas (WMAs). Therefore, about 42 percent <strong>of</strong> Botswana's land area<br />

is reserved for conservation purposes (Republic <strong>of</strong> Botswana Selected<br />

Environmental Indicators, 2002).<br />

5.2.6 Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs)<br />

WMAs are an <strong>in</strong>tegral part <strong>of</strong> Botswana's <strong>tourism</strong> policy implementation. They<br />

facilitate <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wildlife <strong>resource</strong> orientated Community Based<br />

Natural Resources Management (CBNRM) programme. The Botswana Government<br />

has adopted CBNRM as a way <strong>of</strong> ensur<strong>in</strong>g that communities participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>natural</strong><br />
