4.7 Sample<br />

In order to test <strong>the</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>ses generated <strong>in</strong> this study both purposive or judgmental<br />

non-probability sampl<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>terviews, and random sampl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

methods, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> structure questionnaires, were used to obta<strong>in</strong> necessary<br />

data. In-depth <strong>in</strong>terviews were conducted with representatives from government<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions responsible for <strong>the</strong> <strong>management</strong> and control <strong>of</strong> <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s, and<br />

key academic and private sector personnel <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> and <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong><br />

sectors (Table 4.1). Surveys <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> structured questionnaires were conducted<br />

with tourists stay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Okavango Delta region, <strong>the</strong> managers <strong>of</strong> tourist<br />

accommodation facilities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Okavango Delta region and local <strong>in</strong>habitants liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> larger towns and villages <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Delta.<br />

4.8 Preparatory Theoretical Phase<br />

A comprehensive critical review <strong>of</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g academic literature on <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>tourism</strong>, <strong>tourism</strong> and its economic, social and environmental impacts and exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong> <strong>management</strong> and utilisation was conducted (chapter two).<br />

Important issues that were omitted or <strong>in</strong>adequately researched were identified as<br />

potential research questions. This process aided <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview<br />

questions that would provide a comprehensive understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>role</strong> that <strong>tourism</strong><br />

plays <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>management</strong> and utilisation <strong>of</strong> <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s.<br />

4.8.1 In-depth Interview Methodology<br />

Interviewee details (Table 4.1) and <strong>in</strong>formation regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview itself were<br />

collected for each <strong>in</strong>terview. A list <strong>of</strong> relevant questions to be asked dur<strong>in</strong>g each<br />

<strong>in</strong>terview was prepared, but used only as a guide, due to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formal nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terviews. The prepared questions were <strong>of</strong>ten answered dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

discussion with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviewee. Interviews were recorded as hand-written notes.<br />
