4.2 Aims<br />

The aims <strong>of</strong> this study are as follows:<br />

1. To analyse <strong>the</strong> factors which determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> on <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>management</strong> and utilisation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Okavango Delta's <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s.<br />

2. To <strong>in</strong>vestigate <strong>the</strong> relationship between <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> rural <strong>tourism</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Okavango Delta and <strong>the</strong> utilisation and <strong>management</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> area's<br />

<strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s.<br />

3. To assess <strong>the</strong> relationship between <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> rural <strong>tourism</strong> and<br />

environmental, social, economic and demographic changes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Okavango Delta region.<br />

4. To identify viable alternatives for creat<strong>in</strong>g and streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g positive<br />

l<strong>in</strong>kages between <strong>tourism</strong> and <strong>the</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able <strong>management</strong> and utilisation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Okavango Delta.<br />

4.3 Hypo<strong>the</strong>ses<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g hypo<strong>the</strong>ses are advanced <strong>in</strong> this study:<br />

1. There is a mean<strong>in</strong>gful relationship between <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> rural<br />

<strong>tourism</strong> and <strong>the</strong> <strong>management</strong> and utilisation <strong>of</strong> <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Okavango Delta. It is hypo<strong>the</strong>sised, fur<strong>the</strong>r, that <strong>the</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry is one<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key factors dictat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> manner and degree to which <strong>the</strong> Okavango<br />

Delta's <strong>natural</strong> <strong>resource</strong>s are utilised and managed.<br />

2. There is a relationship between <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> rural <strong>tourism</strong> and<br />

socio-economic and demographic changes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Okavango Delta. It is<br />
