in the 21st century, the world will be strongly shaped by the effects of population growth in developing countries and emerging markets and by demographic change in numerous industrialized countries. Developing countries in particular are home to increasing numbers of people who lack access to the necessary pharmaceutical products and medical care. Bayer HealthCare is committed to the principles of sustainable development and accepts responsibility in society. At the center of all our employees’ actions are human and animal health and environmental protection. in the context of the company’s “access to medicine” strategy, Bayer HealthCare provides medicines free of charge to combat the neglected tropical diseases that affect around 1 billion people worldwide. For example, in 2012 Bayer HealthCare doubled the number of Lampit tablets that it will donate for the treatment of Chagas disease, a widespread disease in Latin America, to one million tablets per year over the next five years. Bayer also collaborates with the WHO in programs to combat African sleeping sickness, malaria and multiresistant tuberculosis. The company is participating in the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development to develop a new therapy that will shorten the treatment period for tuberculosis from at present at least six months to four months. As the market leader in the field of hormonal contraceptives, Bayer HealthCare has been supporting family planning programs in a global network of governmental and non-governmental organizations (nGOs) worldwide for more than 50 years. The company has initiated new partnerships to ensure long-term access to hormonal contraceptives for women in developing countries. In late 2012, for example, Bayer HealthCare and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation signed an agreement guaranteeing access to safe and reversible contraception for at least 27 million women in developing countries over a six-year period. Medical Care supports patient and other non-governmental organizations, including the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the Foundation of European nurses in Diabetes (FEnD) and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
