Although melodic motives typically contain rhythmic motives, there aremany cases in which rhythmic motives function independently of melodic patterns, as the examples in figure 6.2 illustrate. The sequence is one of the most common and basic methods of melodic elaboration found in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Some character- istics of sequences are: l ' l,____,t l.
