SOE 2013
SOE – European Society of Ophthalmology
European Society
of Ophthalmology
SOE is the abbreviation for
Societas Ophthalmologica
Europæa and is the European
Society of Ophthalmology with
representatives from 40
European National Ophthalmological
Societies.
Created in 1956 the first Council
was made up of representatives
from 19 different European
countries. The first Congress of
SOE was feld in Athens in 1960
and was attended by 750
The Congress has grown year
on year since and it is anticipated
that there will be more
than 4 000 ophthalmologists at
the 2013 Congress.
While the original aims remain
relevant, today’s Society’s
mission is to become the central
point of European Ophthalmology
primarily through education
as well as fostering closer
collaboration with Subspecialty
Societies and Supranational
Organisations within Europe
Paediatric: Childhood macular dystrophies: genotypes, phenotypes
and prospects for therapy
Tony Moore holds the Duke Elder
Chair Chair of Ophthalmology at the UCL
Institute of Ophthalmology, London.
He has honorary consultant appointments
at Moorfields Moorfields Eye Hospital and
the Hospital for Children, Great
Ormond Street, Street, London, where he has has
his clinical practice.
Professor Moore graduated from from
Oxford University Medical Medical School in
1975 and had had his his residency training training at
Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He undertook a two-year
fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology at the Hospital for
Sick Children in London and the Hospital for Sick Children in
Toronto.
He contributed to discovery of genetic mutations underlying
inherited retinal dystrophies and investigations of the disease
phenotype. He contributed to discovery of genetic mutations
underlying inherited retinal dystrophies and investigations of
the disease phenotype. With Bhattacharya and Votruba he
took part in the identification of the OPA1 gene causing
dominant optic atrophy and detailed investigation of the
associated phenotype. In collaboration with Robin Ali, he
developed a gene therapy program for the treatment of early
onset severe retinal dystrophies. Professor Moore is at present
involved in a large series of studies also involving genetic
influence on congenital cataracts and on AMD development.
He has been publishing for more than 20 years which has
resulted in more than 200 peer reviewed papers.
Tuesday, 11 June, 2013, 13.30–14.15
gregory S. Hageman, United States
retina: A new era for age-related macular degeneration
Gregory Hageman is the John A.
Moran Presidential Professor and the
Executive Director of the Moran
Center for Translational Medicine at at
the University University of of Utah Moran Eye
Center. He is an active member member of
professional and honorary organisations
and has served on on numerous
national and international advisory
boards, service panels and review
committees.
committees.
Dr. Hageman’s primary research interest for over 20 years has
been directed toward assessment of pathways involved in the
etiology of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Dr. Hageman and his colleagues discovered that AMD is
characterised by robust activation of the complement cascade
in the ocular macula, and that variations in complement
genes, including Complement Factor H (CFH), account for
greater than 50% of risk for AMD in Caucasians. More recent
discoveries relate to the role of the choriocapillaris in severe
forms of AMD and diseases that co-segregate with it.
Dr. Hageman has published more than 200 articles, books and
book chapters, as well as abstracts, and he has received
numerous awards for his contributions to AMD research.
A major goal of Dr. Hageman’s current efforts is to expedite
the pace at which basic scientific discoveries are translated
into clinically effective therapies for the treatment of AMD.
SOE 2013
Scientific Programme
Session Types
Key note lectures (Kn)
The four key note lectures are given on
each of the four days of the Congress
during a stand-alone slot. These
lectures are scheduled from 13.30 –
14.15 Saturday, 8 June through Tuesday,
11 June. The lecturers are all outstanding
researchers selected to provide a
state of the art review of a wider field of
ophthalmology.
Symposia (S)
The symposia are sessions where
didactic presentations are made by
leading international experts who will
cover a wide range of topics in all fields
of ophthalmology. Each of the symposia
is sponsored by one or more
subspecialty societies to ensure that the
standard of the invited speakers is of
the highest international level.
Courses (C)
The courses largely have more of a
practical approach and most are
instructional courses. The organisers
will bring together a carefully selected
faculty in their field of specialty for the
EUPO
courses. To keep the setting as informal
and interactive as possible, the number
of seats are limited and advance
booking, when registering, is recommended.
Sometimes, there will be
topics overlapping with some of the
symposia, but the courses will then
typically focus on a particular aspect.
The courses have been divided into
three different educational levels: basic,
intermediate and advanced. As per the
success from SOE 2011, the courses
have yet again been included in the
registration fees.
Wet labs (WL)
Wet labs will be available for the first
time at the SOE Congress. The wet labs
will cover predominantly basic phaco
cataract surgery aimed primarily at
trainee ophthalmologists at the start
of their training, or trainee ophthalmologists
who need hands on experience
in phaco cataract surgery. Sessions
on complications of phaco will also be
available for more advanced trainees
as well as established ophthalmic
surgeons.
The wet labs will run for two days;
Sunday, 9 June and Monday, 10 June.
The sessions will last for 90–120
minutes and all participants will have
their own work station fully equipped
with microscope, phaco machine and
audiovisual aids to assist the instructors
and attendees.
The course director and senior
instructor is Dr. Khiun Tija from
The Netherlands, who will be assisted
by a number of experienced wet lab
instructors from different countries.
Places will be available on a first-come
first-serve basis, please ensure to
purchase your ticket in advance, when
registering for the Congress.
Video sessions (VS)
The video sessions further explore
different aspects of ophthalmology as
illustrated by instructional videos to
give an in-depth and thorough aspect
of the different topics. Interactive
participation by the audience is
encouraged.
Allied Health programme (AHE)
A designated programme for Allied
Health staff is arranged in parallel to
the regular sessions. While this
programme draws on some of the
lecturers from the regular programme,
it also uses a contingency of scholars
from Allied Heath faculties across
Europe.
The Allied Health programme is open
for all delegates.
EUPO (EUPO)
The European University Professors of
Ophthalmology (EUPO) arranges an
educational course each year, this year
held in conjunction to the SOE
Congress. The aim is to provide cross
border education for European
residents. These courses were originally
established in 1988 and the lecturers
are among the most prominent in
European ophthalmology. Most of the
ophthalmology curriculum is covered
during a four-year period to allow
residents to gain an overview of
theoretical knowledge during their
residency period.
Abstract-based sessions
The abstract submission deadline is
10 January, 2013. This is an excellent
opportunity for all delegates to share
their research, findings, knowledge and
experience with medical professionals
in the ophthalmology community.
The abstracts will be presented in the
below formats:
Free paper (FP)
The free paper sessions contain oral
presentations where the authors are
allowed six minutes for presentation
and two minutes for discussion.
rapid fire (rF)
At the oral rapid fire sessions, authors
are given four minutes for presentation
and a further two minutes for discussion.
There will be two lecterns in each
room to promote a swift change
between speakers and keep up the
rapid pace.
web-based platform prior to the
Congress. Delegates will be able to view
the submitted electronic posters during
the Congress at designated workstations
located within the exhibition area.
The software will allow for browsing
and navigating within the actual poster
content, ensuring fast and uncomplicated
access to the desired electronic
posters. The programme displays the
posters in a uniform format and posters
can be searched for by number, title,
author or free text search.
Industry sponsored session (ISS)
Industry sponsored sessions will take
place during stand-alone slots as well as
in parallel to the main programme.
These sessions have been prepared by
companies who select the scientific
content to be approved by the Scientific
Committee.
CME/Disclosure of interest
All speakers have been asked to submit
