Warming Up Your
Home Décor for Winter
By: Gemma Gadher, FW Writer
Winter brings with it the season of home gatherings,
get-togethers, and parties of all sorts. Here you can find some tips
on how to make your place feel warm and seasonal without
dropping a ton of cash for a full out re-decoration.
Heavy Blankets and Quilts
Having a few of these pieces on hand
in warm winter colours (think burgundy or
Christmas tree green) can really make a space
feel comfortable and festive. Not only do they
look great in a room, but they serve a functional
purpose as well!
Festive Photos
Nothing warms up a party like memories of
Christmas past! Head over to your local Wal-
Mart to print off some of your favourite holiday
pictures, and put them in some frames around
your entertaining space. They will liven up the
room and serve as great conversation starters.
For a really warm look, try printing them in
Sepia tones rather than in full colour.
Seasonal Scents
One of the best parts of the holiday season is
the variety of delicious smells that we experience-
the cinnamon, the evergreens, the cookie dough,
etc. You can pick up a beautiful oil burner from
the Body Shop for around $20. While you’re
there, you can also grab some amazing home
fragrance oils ranging from vanilla spice to
holiday pumpkin (my favourite is cranberry).
This home décor idea also serves as a great gift
for the holidays.
Use candles
Candles are relatively inexpensive, and
should not be saved just for special occasions!
Group them together, combine them with plants,
or set them in front of a mirror. If you feel using
them too often will cramp your budget, set aside
one meal a week where you ceremoniously use
them, such as Sunday dinner.
At Home
Layer your fabrics
Add one or two topper fabrics to your tables,
layer several towels over each other in your bath
and kitchen, add a valance to your window
treatments. Choose an area rug and place it
over carpeting in your family or living room.
Remember this doesn’t have to be expensive, use
leftover fabric from your other projects, visit your
local thrift store, or use unused quilts, coverlets,
sheets, tablecloths, and cloth napkins from your
linen closet.
All of these ideas are quick, easy, and
inexpensive, and can be used throughout your
rooms. So take a few hours and see how little
changes can create cozy comfort in your
own home. FW
Home Gym Must-Haves
By: Amanda Bloye, FW Writer
It’s that time of year again where our usual
regimes of sculpting, sweating and cardio are
thrown out the window in lieu of sugar cookies,
turkey dinner and other holiday eats sure to
leave your mouth watering and your bust line
bulging. You want to make it to the gym but you
somehow just don’t make it. You decide to put a
treadmill on your shopping list but the ability of
the couch to outwit, outplay and outlast proves
much stronger.
And so we are at a crossroads. You want
to be smart and get fit but there is always that
crutch keeping you away. Fortunately, I am here
to act as your conscience. Now more than ever
it is simple and (relatively) cheap to get the home
gym you desire. Here’s a list of the essentials to
get you started.
Variety
Part of the reason why we don’t all have
home gyms to rival that of any fitness centre is
the cost. Sure, you may get some use out of it
but, if you’re attempting to scrimp and save for
that fabulous Chanel bag, chances are you won’t
be running out to buy a treadmill any time soon.
Luckily, to get a great workout at home you
don’t have to go much further than your family
room. When we ponder workout videos past we
see Jane Fonda and Buns of Steel and the mental
image that pops up is not so pretty. It’s time to
look into the future. The workout DVDs that
exist now are great, inventive and, best of all,
void of big hair and one-piece leotards. They
provide a way to create the well-rounded workout
you desire while still staying on budget.
We like:
Carmen Electra’s Aerobic Striptease: Bundle
Pack, aerobicstriptease.com,
$54.99 US
A.M. Yoga for Your Week by Gaiam, HMV
stores, $16.99 CAD
Latin Cardio Dance by Dancing with the
Stars, HMV stores, $12.99
Tae Bo: 3 Pack by Billy Blanks, hmv.ca,
$59.99 CAD
Cardio
One of the most essential components
of a well-rounded workout to consider when
constructing a home gym is cardio. A daily
dose of cardio can do more than you think to
boost your energy levels and lead to a longer,
healthier lift. According to the American Heart
Association, “lack of physical activity is a risk
factor for heart disease.” While assembling
a home gym can be a lengthy and expensive
and www.sxc.hu/
process, a great cardio machine (treadmill,
elliptical, stationary bike) can do wonders for
your heart and your waistline.
We like:
HealthStream 802 Treadmill, Fitness Depot
stores across Canada, $1,138
PaceMaster Silver XSC Bike, Fitness Depot
stores across Canada, $388
Resistance Training
A vital part of maintaining fitness
goals is resistance training. According to
eMedicineHealth.com, “resistance training
is any exercise that causes the muscles to
contract against an external resistance with the
expectation of increases in strength, tone, mass,
and/or endurance.” Items to use as
external resistance can include,
“dumbbells, rubber exercise
tubing, your own body weight,
bricks, bottles of water, or any
other object that causes the
muscles to contract,” explains the site.
We like:
Driving in the Snow:
Some Tips
By: Gemma Gadher, FW Writer
The first snow of the year is always so
exciting! Watching it through the window and
seeing it cover the ground makes us feel so warm
and fuzzy inside- until we realize that we need
to drive through that mess later on and it’s going
to make us an hour late. With these safe winter
driving tips, however, you can put your worries
aside and get back to those snow angels I know
you’ve wanted to make.
E/5/-/-/winter-tires5.jpg and
http://www.staffpatrol.com/products/images/FAK_Auto_
First_Aid_Kit.jpg
- If you are traveling a long distance, plan
your route ahead of time. Let someone know of
your destination and expected time of arrival.
- Wear comfortable clothing that doesn’t
restrict your movement while at the wheel. Keep
warm clothing in your car in case you need to get
out of your vehicle.
- Clear snow and ice from all windows,
lights, mirrors, and the roof (people tend to
forget about the roof, until they start driving
and the snow falls right down onto the window
in front of them!) After starting your vehicle,
wait for the fog to clear from the interior of the
windows so that you will have good visibility
from all angles.
- Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle.
Having essential supplies can provide some
comfort and safety for you and your passengers
should you become stranded. The kit should
include: a First Aid kit, map, ice scraper, snow
brush, matches, candles, flashlight, warning
triangles, flares, tow and battery jumping
cables, folding shovel, a bag of sand, a blanket,
winter gloves, cell phone if you have one, and
an emergency HELP sign that you can put in the
back window if you need it.
- Make sure your vehicle is mechanically
ready for the rigours of winter and keep your
fuel tank sufficiently full — at least half a tank is
recommended because if you get stuck, the engine
will be your only source of heat.
- Make sure you have sufficient windshield
washer fluid in the reservoir and that it is rated in
the -40°C temperature range. Keep an extra jug
in the vehicle- make sure you keep the fluid that
has anti-freeze in it.
- Install snow tires on all four wheels.
- If you are in an area with cell phone service
and have a cell phone, use it only when necessary.
When you need help, pull well off the road to
make or receive a call. FW
Behind the Wheel
2008 Review:
What cars made the top
of the sales list?
By: Amanda Bloye, FW Writer
With the year of the rat almost behind
us, 2008 ushered in a slew of changes and
improvements in the automotive industry. With
the possibility of recession looming over us and
a desire to remain eco-conscious, 2008 was a
time where everyone wanted more for their buck.
We’ve compiled a review of the best the industry
had to offer this year in everything from lowpriced
sedans to SUVs.
Sedan under $20,000. For those looking
for a reliable auto that won’t break the bank,
Kiplinger.com has voted the Mazda3 as the best
in cost-friendly sedans for 2008. This year’s
model offers drivers a fuel efficiency of 8.4 L/100
km in the city and 6.1L/100 km on the highways.
The Mazda3 sedan is available in GX, GS and
GT trim. The GX (the sedan’s base model)
includes “inch steel wheels, fixed intermittent
wipers, CD stereo with auxiliary jack, bodycolour
mirrors, tilt and telescopic steering wheel,
60/40 split folding rear seat, floor mats, centre
console box with lid, anti-lock brakes, and side
and curtain airbags,” describes Canadiandriver.
com. The Mazda3 sedan sells for a base price of
$16,895.
The best in luxury. When it came to luxury
autos, 2008 saw classic models getting a modern
makeover. At the top of the list was the Lexus LS
460L sedan. New for Lexus in 2008 was a wallet
size Smart Key, factory installed XM Satellite
E/5/-/-/winter-tires5.jpg and
http://www.staffpatrol.com/products/images/FAK_Auto_
First_Aid_Kit.jpg
Radio and changes to option packages. The LS
has a fuel efficiency of 12.9 L/100 km in the
city and 8.2 L/100 km and 8.2 L/100 km when
highway driving. According to Canadiandriver.
com, “the LS 460 is fast, handles well and looks
good, although some may find the car’s styling a
little understated for the price.” The Lexus LS
460 starts at a base price of $80,100.
Crossover excellence. At a time of economic
uncertainty individuals looking to purchase a
vehicle want to drive further, longer and for
cheaper than ever before. According to Kiplinger.
com’s list of the top cars of 2008, when it came
to crossovers the Honda CR-V won best in
its class. Winter-ready with four-wheel drive
capabilities, the CR-V has proven itself worthy
of surviving Canadian winters. Canadiandriver.
com described the CR-V as a “very pleasant
vehicle to drive” but notes that the 2008 Honda
was a “little underpowered in passing situations.”
The 2008 Honda CR-V sells at a base cost of
$37,790. FW
What to do (and avoid!)
When Christmas Shopping
By: Gemma Gadher, FW Writer
Any true fashionista knows the tricks to
getting the most out of a trip to the mall. But
around the holidays with tight budgets and
tight timelines, even an expert could use some
Christmas shopping tips!
What to do:
Make a list
When shopping during the holidays, you
can’t help but want to pick up a little something
for yourself. After all, with all the work
you’ve been doing to save up for all these gifts,
you deserve it! Try to stick to the list though
because it will save you serious temptation
dollars. Some of which can then be used at the
real sales on the 26th!
Wrap with care
A lot of times, the way the gift presented is
just as important (if not more) than the gift itself.
Take this opportunity to show that special person
how much you care by taking the time to make
their gift look truly dazzling. This doesn’t only
refer to the “look” of the wrapping job, but also
to little details such as eco-friendly packaging for
a friend who cares a lot about the environment.
Stay Safe
This one revolves mostly around all of you
E-shoppers out there. Make sure that the websites
you use have SSL technology to keep your credit
card information safe. This way, you can also
contest the charge if your item *deep breathe*
doesn’t arrive as expected.
http://farm2.static.flickr.
com/1355/1362397477_6bc865ef87.jpg?v=0
What not to do
Shop only on the weekend
No matter how much you love to shop, no
one gets too excited about long sweaty lineups on
a Saturday afternoon. Try and get your shopping
done during the week. If you work, you can
always try lunchtime or on your way home- trust
me, it will be worth the time saved!
Limit your choices
It can be super frustrating when you have a
specific gift in mind for someone, but can’t seem
to find it anywhere. Try and avoid the “perfect
gift” blahs by writing a few generic back up gifts
on the back of your list. Remember that it is the
thought that counts!
Lose the receipts
A Classic no-no. Whether a person has
changed their size, style, or taste, there is nothing
that can’t be fixed…as long as you keep the
receipt handy! Hopefully you won’t need it, but
keep a Christmas receipt envelope updated in
case of duplicate gifts, or presents that just didn’t
work out. FW
Holiday Magic!
Even though we may dread the arrival of
winter, one thing we look forward to is the
festivities that come along with the season.
This past Saturday November 22nd 2008, the
lights were switched on the Bloor- Yorkville
area putting up beautiful illuminated displays
that make this winter so special. To commence
this ceremony Steven and Chris from the CBC
daytime show did the countdown, Zero Gravity
Circus put up a great show of acrobats and prize
packs were given away.
If you are in the mood to take out family for
a scenic walk, shopping in the district or just a
walk by - the Holiday Magic display a definite
must see this cold winter.
Boots:
A tale of love and devotion
By: Amanda Bloye, FW Writer
In every woman’s closet there lurks a
true predator. A true beauty that we love so
unequivocally that the result of that love can only
be undeniable pain. Yes, the story of women and
boots is truly one of hurt and devotion. Whether
you got them a size too small because the sale
was just too good to pass up or the heel is just an
inch too high to walk, we (unfortunately for our
feet) will usually opt for fashion over function.
Fortunately, this season’s designers have
taken our tootsies into consideration and moved
beyond grandma’s galoshes to bring out the
finest in flat-soled footwear. Whether you crave
a stylish flat or a sky-high stiletto, we’ve got the
boots to get you from one end of winter to the
other without breaking your neck.
These boots were made for walking…
When you’re high tailing it from Union
Station to work the last thing your tired feet need
is cramp. This season’s flats are great for winter
walking, while still being stylish enough to meet
our every fashion need. If you’re still craving a
bit of height, try a riding boot with a thick heel
or a low-heeled stiletto.
Colour me fabulous
As winter brings us dark days and drab
wardrobes one thing left to count on is a
fabulously bright pair of boots. Bland toes take
a stand with this season’s blues, purples and
rustic reds. When playing with colour feel free to
experiment to your heart’s content but remember
not to go overboard. Let the shoes make the
Just a little taller
Sometimes we fall in love no matter how
much pain and suffering we may incur along
the way. These are the boots that find a way
onto our feet and into our hearts no matter how
impractical they appear. They’re high, in charge
and can be a serious pain in the butt. We may
be in excruciating pain but in the end it’s always
worth it for a fabulous pair of boots.
Top 3 Worst Films
of 2008 By: Shehrezad Bawany, FW Writer
Shockingly, these actually made it to
theatre, where people like us were tricked into
watching them.
The Women
Clearly we were pushing our luck when we
thought we would be having another magical
Sex and the City-type experience. While there
were no men in the movie, sadly there were none
in the audience either. Do not be fooled ladies,
this movie is not the empowering and inspiring
comedy it pretends to be!
Beverly Hills Chihuahua
Cute, talking dogs? Yeah, that’s what we all
thought. The only thing appealing in this movie
was the dog food that they were constantly
showing. In the middle of the movie I wanted to
do as the Chihuahua liberationists and scream,
“No mas!”
What Happens in Vegas
They should really stop giving Vegas a bad
name, especially if it only appears in about
3.5 minutes of the movie. This movie could be
watched on mute if you just plan to focus purely
on the physical beauty of Cameron Diaz and
Ashton Kutcher. It did not work the last dozen
times someone tried to make a movie like this,
and it is not going to work now. FW
In the Industry
Not Really the
Season for Four
Seasons
The big holiday party death count continues:
Conde Nast just joined Hearst and Marc
Jacobs in canceling their annual holiday party.
The media giant usually throws a hugely lavish
lunch for the top editors at the Four Seasons.
The assistants get to stay in the office to munch
on free chips and salsa. Guess those chips will be
for everybody this time.
Diamonds are a
Girl’s Ex Friend
Some facts:
1. American workers make up almost half
of all diamond purchases worldwide. [Another
somewhat related fact: There is exactly one
diamond mine in the US (in Arkansas), and it’s
not used for commercial sourcing.]
2. US joblessness just increased to 6.5%, the
highest in 14 years. Translation: A lot of those
American workers are out of jobs right now.
3. Almost 50% of all diamond purchases are
made in the fourth quarter. Translation: They’re
usually bought as holiday gifts, or in anticipation
of a major bonus to buoy the cost, so most major
diamond dealers (Harry Winston, Tiffany’s,
Van Cleef, etc) haven’t even felt the full effect of
our downward economy, and are just about to
enter the time of year that usually carries their
business.
So what does this all mean? Well, according
to Bloomberg, the price of diamonds should fall
at least 15% next year, which basically means
that Harry Winston is going on sale - but does
15% off $30,000 really help? Well, for some..
Sustainable Style Show Midnight in the Garden:
By: Susan Nick, FW
The Sustainable Style Show was a full day
event that took place in the Fermenting Cellar in the
Distillery District on Saturday, November 8th. This
was the first of its kind featuring over 20 vendors
of both eco-friendly fashions along with beauty
vendors. They were hand selected and had me the
following criteria of fairly traded, local and ethically
produced products, as well as those made from
sustainable products.
Trendy eco-fashion was displayed by the everpopular
Preloved, who live by the concept of utilizing
old and new pieces to create a unique piece. Heart
on your Sleeve displayed a wide selection of well
tailored, locally made vegan women’s wear using
all luxurious plant based fibers and recycled textile
alternatives. The designers of Thieves showed great
selection of urban high end street fashions for both
men’s and women’s wear from fabrics such as soy
blends, organic cotton, Tussah sick blends, organic
wool, hemp and bamboo, lyocell and seacell.
Grassroots displayed organic pieces for both men
and women, using materials such as hemp and
organic cotton, natural personal care products
and recycled stationery and paper. There were no
shortage of jewellery vendors at this trade show
featuring gorgeous gems with recycled materials such
as pieces from old chandeliers, seeds from Africa,
coconuts, buttons from old cardigans and beads
made from recycled newspapers.
There were many intoxicating aromas of
lavender and essential oils floating in the air that
made it irresistible to ignore the beauty vendors at
this show. Pangea Organics, who are well known for
not only their skin care products that are guaranteed
“always beneficial, never artificial,” also caught my
eye for their eco-friendly packaging. Product boxes
are made using a new Zero
Waste process with 100%
post-consumer paper and
organic seeds like sweet
basil and amaranth. Simply
also rounded out the
beauty vendors producing
fair trade organic soaps,
body polish and body
butter made from essential
oils for their variety of therapeutic benefits.
Baby on the Hip and Kai Kids are unique to
specialize in environmentally friendly products
for families. Kai Kids specializes in eco-friendly
clothing and accessories for babies, toddlers, new
moms and moms to be. Everything from BPA-free
bottles to bamboo bedding, natural rubber pacifiers
to non-toxic skin care products, bamboo baby fork,
spoons and bowls as well as 100% natural bum bum
balm. Baby on the Hip specializes in organic cotton
clothing along with the cutest stuffed toys made from
felt and recycled fabric for the stuffing. Not only are
the animals adorable and one of a kind but they are
supper soft to the touch and made with vegetable
dies, they are the perfect little guys to have your baby
cuddle up with!
This was a truly an amazing opportunity to find
all these great vendors under one roof and even more
impressive was the great response from consumers to
learn more about how they can reduce their footprint
on our earth. This show was a great success for its
first showing and hopefully will not be the last of its
kind, as we need more shows like this to promote
smarter shopping choices and present consumers
with more sustainable options. FW
Green Gala
The second annual Green Gala took place in the
Historic Distillery District on Saturday, November
8th, bringing together Canada’s top fashion
designers, eco-friendly vendors from the Sustainable
Style Show, celebrities modeling on the runway
along with guests that came to celebrate and raise
funds for Environmental Defence and Fashion Takes
action, Kelly Drennan’s newest undertaking. Fashion
Takes Action will launch January 2009 as a global
organization providing a number of services to the
fashion industry around sustainability.
As soon as you stepped foot in the Fermenting
Cellar you knew you were at the Green Gala, this
year themed “Midnight in the Garden.” Guests
sipped on wine and cocktails as they mingled
amongst the crowd and for those who chose to drive,
Toronto tap water was being served in biodegradable
cups. Waiters weaved through the crowd of guests
offering up delectable bite size bruschetta, made
strictly from organic ingredients. The sounds of Tara
MacLean set the backdrop to this great evening as
guests waited for the highly anticipated fashion show
to begin.
The show featured outfits created from
sustainable fabrics by ten of Canada’s top fashion
designers. Designers included Project Runway
Canada winner Evan Biddell, Thieves, Zoran
Dobric, Nada Yousif, Carrie Hayes, Eugenia Leavitt,
Jason Meyers, Aime Luxury and Damzels in this
the evening with celebrities and Canadian media
walking the catwalk to show off their favorite
designers creative pieces. Standouts were the trio of
cute and flirty dresses by Nada Yousif, along with
Carrie Hayes who created elegant yet wearable floor
length dresses. After the runway show wrapped up
guests were encouraged to vote on their favorite cell
phone carrier case that each designer had designed
to be voted on as the favorite to be included in the
silent auction. Samsung, the presenting sponsor for
the event had guests typing in on their blackberries
and other cellular devices to vote for their favorite
cell phone carrier. In the end, Evan Biddell won by a
slight margin and had provided another reason for
guests to check out the silent auction and put in a bid
on their favorite item.
The evening commenced with guests being
encouraged to put their money where their hearts
are and take one more carefully look at the items
in the silent auction as proceeds would be going
towards raising funds for Environmental Defence
and Fashion Takes Action. Kelly Drennan put on
an elegant night featuring great entertainment along
with showcasing dazzling evening and couture
pieces while taking a stance for our planet. Not
only was the evening successful in gathering people
together for a good cause and raising awareness
but also inspiring other event planners to use more
sustainable decor elements and energy sources to
lighten their footprint on our planet. FW
